Friday, Oct 20, 1911 THE HOLT FUNERAL The funeral of Uncle George HOLT on Friday of last week was largely attended. The services were held at the family residence and the yard was full of people. The services were conducted by Rev. P.W. WALTHRALL, who came to supply for Rev. CUMMINS. After a short but very able talk, a few songs and a prayer, the remains were then given into the hands of the Odd Fellows, who, forty or fifty strong, bore them to the city cemetery where they were laid away under the very appropriate lodge ceremony. The funeral procession reached about half way from town to the cemetery, the deceased being so highly respected in the community. His aged companion held up remarkable well under the strain, considering her infirmities. Grandma, as well as the children have the sympathy of the community. MRS. CHAS. BENCH DEAD Mrs. Charles BENCH, living a few miles south of town, died on Tuesday last and was buried at the city cemetery on the day following. Particulars are not known at this office. HALL GETS FIVE YEARS The case of State of Oklahoma vs. Henry HALL, who was charged with attempting to take the life of Charles COOLEY by shooting at him through the window of the COOLY home two miles south of here about a year ago, came to trial in the district court at Miami this week, and HALL was found guilty and sentenced to five years at hard labor in the state penitentiary. Mrs. COOLEY, who is charged with accessory to the fact, secured a continuance until next term of court. ANOTHER BIG BUSINESS CHANGE Another big double business deal was pulled off on last Monday, which is going to change things around quite a bit. The Fairland Hardware Co., bought the mercantile stock of J.H. CONNOLLY. The Hardware Co., also made a change in its ownership, dividing the stock, the SHEPHERDs taking the Dry Goods and the HOWARDs taking the Hardware. All the hardware will be taken across the street to the new hardware store while the dry goods will remain at the old stand, to which will be added a big line of clothing and gent’s furnishing goods. Mr. SHEPHERD is an experienced dry goods merchant and will no doubt give us an up to date store, and the merging of the two hardware stocks will give us one of the completest hardware stores in the country. LOCAL NEWS Houston JAMES and A.J. THARP moved to Vinita this week where they will operate a paint and paper hanging business. M.T. MABREY sold his residence property this week to G.W. A post card from Orvill COLE, who is attending Hill’s Business College at Oklahoma City, says he likes it fine. Shade ROBERTS left last Sunday morning for Blackwater, Va., to spend the winter and he says possibly longer. He will read the News while gone and that’s a sure sign that he’ll come back.
