Friday, Sept. 8, 1911 SCHOOL NEXT MONDAY The Fairland Public Schools will open next Monday with the following corps of teachers: Principal: Prof. John JACKSON; 1st Ass’t: Miss Nellie RYCROFT; 2nd Ass’t: Miss Edna WILLIAMS; 3rd Ass’t: Miss Nellie NMPHERMORE; 4th Ass’t: Mrs. J. JACKSON; 5th Ass’t Miss Sybil CONNOLLY. The board has had the school building cleaned and renovated and put in readiness for the opening next Monday. A good big enrollment is expected. MANY BUSINESS CHANGES The past week has been another one of "selling out" and "buying in." We don’t know that we can name all the changes that have taken place, but here are a few: Roy CHAMBERS has retired from the Central Barber Shop, and A.J. DOUGLASS is now proprietor. The restaurant in the same building also changed hands and is now being operated by a Mr. DeJARRETT, coming here from Cheauteau. Oscar WOODSON has taken Mike WORMINGTON’s place at May’s barber shop. The Bee Hive lunch room is changing hands today, Mr. MOORE selling out to the clothes cleaning people. LOCAL NEWS Mrs. LINCOLN and daughter Miss Kathleen returned Saturday from a visit to Seneca. C.L. JONES and wife visited in Joplin over Sunday. Ira M. THORNHILL offers his services as a Notary Public. Prof. J.C. NOAH orders the News to himself at Ottawa. Mrs. Edna WILSON gives the News a lift on subscription. W.J. THOMAS and son Clinton were Afton visitors, Saturday. Wm. HEARD visited his brother across the river over Sunday. Misses Della and Minnie WOODSON were Afton visitors Saturday last. J.H. CONNOLLY stayed at home all day last Monday and watched it rain. Riley PADEN returned to Independence, Kas., last Saturday to reenter school. The News will keep him posted. The following persons represented the Fairland Sunday Schools at the County Convention at Afton last Saturday and Sunday: R.M. HALE and Mrs. STOVER represented the Christian school. Mrs. C.W. PRIER and T.M. ELLIOTT, the Methodist school. J.T. NEWPORT and Mrs. S.V. WALLEN, the Baptist school, and W.L. CONNER the Latter Day Saints school. Mrs. W.S. NANCE was an Afton visitor Wednesday. Att’y. O. RIDER of Vinita had business in our town Tuesday last. Uncle Jack ENGLAND and the two Johns returned Monday from a visit to Barry county, Mo. Prof. JACKSON has moved into the NANCE property on the south side and is getting ready to open school next Monday morning. One of Eli DRY’s little boys has been quite sick the past week, but is better now. Mr. MILBOURN informs us that he has heard from his wife and daughter and that they reached their destination all right. BAPTIST CHURCH NOTES Miss Lisle DUMAS has been chosen teacher for the young ladies during Mrs. WEIR’s absence. A good selection. At the church meeting last Wednesday night, J.F. ENGLAND, Frank ADKINSON, J.T. NEWPORT and Miss Josie ROUTON were elected messengers to the Association at Vinita , in October. J.S. MOORE was a Joplin visitor yesterday. Mrs. MABREY is enjoying a visit from a niece of Missouri. M.T. MABREY has been in Missouri for several days on business. One of Andy GOINS’ little boys is having a tussle with typhoid fever. Mr. and Mrs. CONNOLLY visited at the Wm. ENGLAND home on Horse Creek, last Sunday. Mrs. LADD has added to the looks of her residence on the south side by applying fresh paint. Misses Eula MAY and Arline DUMAS entertained a big crowd of their friends at the DUMAS home on last evening. Delicious refreshments and an awfully enjoyable time was reported.
