Goldie was a product of the great depression. In 1934 she married, then later divorced Loren Cooper, the father of Delbert Cooper, her son and only child. In 1936, she married Edward Stafford. They, along with the rest of the dust bowl refugees headed west. They landed in Madera County, living near the San Joaquin River. It was while Ed was recovering from a terrible automobile accident, that they moved to Hanford, where they lived several years. In 1946, they bought their home in Laton. In 1948, she was hired by the Laton High School District, as their first female custodian. In 1954, she was honored because the "Oak Leaves" the high school Annual was dedicated to her for her caring ways with all the students. A quote from the Annual states "No matter how busy she was, she always stopped and talked to us. Goldie - always there - always friendly - in fact a true friend to all - concerned with our thoughts and well being - making her home a second home to those who wanted it. To our own Goldie Stafford we humbly dedicate this Annual of 1954." Many former Laton High School students can recall going to her home, to ask her to open the locker doors after hours, to retrieve their homework or books during the 14 years she served as custodian. Ed passed away in December of 1959, but she continued working for the school district. When she married B.O. Klutts in 1962, they moved to Patterson where she took a year to rest and vacation. In 1963, they moved to Modesto, where she worked at state hospitals until she retired in 1978. When Mr. Klutts passed away in 1983, she moved back to her home in Laton to be near her family. She lived there until late in 2003, when she went to Mabel's Place, an assisted living home near Kingsburg. In 1997, she was honored as a Laton Lions Rodeo "Old Timer," that same year, her great-granddaughter, "Julie" was the Rodeo Queen. During her lifetime, Goldie had many hobbies, among them were crocheting and reading, fishing and camping and traveling to Arkansas to visit with grandson, Daniel and his family. While they were growing up, one of Goldie's greatest loves was taking her grandsons on numerous camping and fishing trips and other adventures. But the highlight of all her fishing experiences was in 1995, when she went to Nootka Island, Canada to a fishing camp on a salmon fishing trip with Delbert, Daniel and nine other men. She caught her limit of salmon every day they were there. Plus, she caught the most fish of anyone in their group of 11. Her largest fish weighed 36 pounds, Daniel was the only one to beat her with a 40 pounder. Goldie was born Dec. 19, 1914 in Quapaw, Oklahoma. She was one of two daughters in a family of 10 children belonging to George and Luler Berkley. She was preceded in death by her parents and all her siblings. She is survived by her only child, Delbert Cooper, his wife Ginger and their six sons, Denis of Laton, Daniel of Springdale, Arkansas, Donnel, Duane and Douglas all of Laton and Darrin of Visalia. She also has 17 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; plus many nieces, nephews, great and great-great. She will be missed by all, and especially as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, as well as a loving aunt to all of her many nieces and nephews. She had an open heart and was a friend to all. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at People's Funeral Chapel in Hanford. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m., Thursday at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Laton. Remembrances may be sent to the Laton Pentecostal Church Women's Ministry, 6066 Riverdale Ave., Laton, CA. 93242.
