JOHNSTON REPORTED KILLED IN ACTION Previously Reported Missing, Had Transferred to Air Corps From 45th; 4 Brothers in War Lt. Calvin R. Johnston was killed in action over France, Aug. 26, 1944, his wife, who is with her parents in Ohio has been advised by telegram from the adjutant general. Mrs. Johnston called Lt. Johnston’s parents at Pawnee Saturday and told them of the telegram. Reports coming from the war depart in September stated that Lt. Johnston was missing. His wife, parents and the r relatives had held hope he would be found. Lt. Johnston was one of five sons of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Johnston serving in the armed forces. He had been a member of Co. B, 1279th infantry, the Pawnee national guard Company a long time. When that company was called into Federal service at Pawnee Sept. 17, 1940, he was a sergeant. He trained with the 45th division at Camp Berkeley, in Louisiana, and at Camp Devens. Prior to entering the national guard he had served three years in the regular army. It was while with the 45th that he transferred to the air corps and after much training, was given his wings and a commission. He had been overseas only a few months at the time of his death. He was born near Glencoe, June 28, 1917. When a child his parents moved to a farm near Pawnee and it was near this city he grew to manhood. He was graduated from the Pawnee high school with the class of 1935. He was married to Miss Ruby Burch and they have two children, Calmina Jean and Mary Elizabeth, Mrs. Johnston and the children are with Mrs. Johnston’s parents in Ohio. Four Brothers, all in the service, are Carl Kenneth, Merle, and Marion. Three sisters are Mrs. Carl Cather, Mrs. Frank Pensfield and Rachel of the home.
