PAWNEE ROUND-UP STARTS WITH BANG

October 12, 1922—Pawnee Courier—For the first time in the history of Pawnee,
and surpassing any previous one held in the State, Colonel Moss started off
his Round-up this morning with a bang.  Some of the best champion ropers and
riders have gathered together for this event and it was astonishing to the 
citizens of Pawnee to see that the first round-up that has been given should
draw the large number of the best people of America in their particular line.
Noticeable among the large number of champion and ex-champions here are:  Ben
Johnson the boy who recently lowered the world’s record at Cheyenne in roping
and steer typing.  Lee Robinson, the world’s champion calf roper, Freddy Lowry,
the ex-champion steer roper of the World’ Freddy Beeson, Eddy Burgess, George 
Weir, Floyd and Guy Shultz, all men that are second to none in America.
Friday has been designated as Pawnee Day and the World’s famous bulldogger will
attempt to bulldog a buffalo, using one of Major Gordon W. Lilly’s (Pawnee Bill),
buffaloes.  Major Lilly’s herd will be on exhibition at the round-up.
The famous clown and fun maker, Tommy Douglas, who has been connected with various
movie colonies, and the largest rodeos I the country will entertain the public 
with his amusing antics.
Among the lady riders who will appear are Miss Ray and Fox Hastings, two of the 
cleverest lady horsewomen in their particular line.  Friday Miss Hastings will 
attempt to ride that famous bucking horse Starlight, furnished by the 101 Ranch.
Both she and Miss Hastings will endeavor to satisfy the minds of the spectators 
that women can stay with as wild a horse and for as long a time as many man that 
wore a pair of chaps.
The round-up will last through to Sunday, inclusive with something doing every
minute each day.  A large number of home talents will compete for the purses.
Wednesday morning about twenty wagonloads of Cheyenne Indians arrived and they 
will put on a war dance each day.
