Carnes was born June 22, 1912 in Peggs Oklahoma the daughter of Warren David and Della Mae (Harris) Norwood. As an infant, she moved to the Cleveland, Oklahoma area with her family and attended rural school before attending Cleveland schools and graduating from Cleveland High School in 1932. Jewell was married to Carl S. Carnes in Tulsa, Oklahoma on December 24, 1933 and the couple made their initial home in Cleveland, working together and operating Carnes Exchange Grocery Store for almost five years before selling it in 1938. They then purchased a farm near Bear Creek (Cowskin Bay area) where they also operated a dairy/creamery. In 1943, the Carnes family moved to a farm east of Cleveland on the Arkansas River basin where they grew watermelons and continued to operate the dairy business. In 1947, Carl established an oilfield trucking service company and Jewell worked alongside Carl as the dispatcher for the company. She continued to assist in the daily operating of Osage Oil and Transport until the couple retired in the mid 1970s. Carl and Jewell enjoyed spending time together and traveled extensively, including an around the world cruise and, on a couple of occasions to the Holy Lands. For many years after their retirement, they spent their winter months in Florida. Jewell was baptized into the family of Christ on March 23, 1947 at the First Baptist Church in Cleveland. For many years she served with Aretha Meigs as second grade Sunday School teacher. She has been active in the church throughout her life until failing health prohibited her from attending. Jewell was a devoted wife and mother and was courageous and untiring in the care of Carl after he suffered a stroke several years ago. She enjoyed spending time with her family and church family. In addition to traveling, her hobbies included sewing, cooking and reading. Jewell passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at the Cleveland Area Hospital at the age of ninety years, five months and five days. She is survived by her husband of nearly sixty-nine years; a son, Dwain Carnes of Cleveland, Oklahoma; granddaughter and her husband, Kim and Jerry Brady of Cleveland; grandson David Carnes of Hallett, Oklahoma; great grandson, Ryan Brady of Cleveland; and two great great-grandchildren, Kayden and Kylar Brady of Cleveland. Jewell was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Norwood and a sister, Mildred Summers. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, December 2, 2002 at the First Baptist Church in Cleveland with Dr. Larry Wilson and Reverend George Boston officiating. Burial will be at the Woodland Cemetery, Cleveland under the direction of the Chapman-Black Funeral Home in Cleveland.
