W. D. COOK Death claimed Mrs. W. D. Cook 81, pioneer Wichitan at her home 1629 Lucille, at 7:50 PM Wednesday. She was the wife of Rev. W. D. Cook, together with whom she had taught and done church work throughout portions of North Texas. Death came after a long illness. Mrs. Cook had been burned severely last Feb. 27, when her clothing caught fire in an accident at the family home. Services for Mrs. Cook will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 from the Wesley Methodist Church. Rev. A. H. Logan pastor Assisted by Rev. C. D. Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery under direction of Hampton Vaughn Merkle Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church 1509 23th at 1:30 PM. Pallbearers will be Martin Craig, Louis Ayres, F.M. Brown C. R. Heginbotham, Rev. James Johnson and C. A. Sawyer. Mrs. Cook, nee Genevieve McDonald was born at Abner (?) TX, near Kaufman, April 13, 1873.? The couple were wed at Canton in Van Zandt County TX, Sept 23, 1896? Mrs. Cook, and her husband who was ordained in the old North Methodist conference in a meeting at Vernon, TX in 1907, had made their home with a daughter, Mrs. R. L. Mansell in recent years. The veteran church worker had served in more than a dozen area communities in North Texas as well as assignments in Central and East Texas schools before and after they were married. After Rev. Cook's ordination, they continued teaching along with the pastorships of the churches of Texas. They first came to Wichita Falls in 1911. Both were teachers in Texas schools before the turn of the century and had taught in Central, North and West Texas. The family served in Ministerial and teaching assignments in Seymour, Graham, Vera, Jacksboro, Bryson, Vernon, Henrietta, Cisco, Eastland and other area communities. In Wichita County they were teachers, pastors and leaders in the Cooper-Friberg, Scotland, Adams Street and other community churches. Twice Rev. and Mrs. Cook were assigned to churches outside the North Texas Area. Serving in Princeton and Farmersville. Then after returning to this area they assumed church leadership at and near Cleburne, TX. It was at Cleburne that Rev. and Mrs. Cook retired four years ago to return here to make their home. Mrs. Cook was active in the Parent Teachers Association serving as president in three associations here. In the early 20's she was president of the Sibley Taylor Civic League, which later merged with other civic leagues and social and civic organizations to form the Woman's Forum. Mrs. Cook was one of the earlier leaders in Texas in Camp Fire Girls work and the organization of Camp Fire Groups. She and Mr. Cook organized the Yale church here in 1921 which was merged with other churches later. Survivors include another daughter, Mrs. Raymond Searcy, and a son Curtis Cook, both of Wichita Falls, four other sons L. M. Cook, Austin, TX, Charles S. Cook, Tulsa, OK, Don S.
