Carl Eugene "Gene" Brown was born July 28, 1925 to Cady and Ammah Brown in Wichita, Kansas. He passed away Tuesday May 19, 2009 in Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 83. Gene grew up in Wichita, Kansas and attended Kansas State University where he earned his masters degree at OCU. Gene served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy, where he was stationed in the Pacific Theateer. While serving in the Navy, he attended flight training, which lead to a lifelong love of flying. After teaching school in Oklahoma, Gene was a successful businessman. Among his endeavors were the A&W Drive-In and Universal Aviation in Stillwater, Oklahomaa, where he was one of the top 500 certified flight instructors in the U.S. Through his love of flying, Gene led the Flying Farmers on trips to Costa Ricaa for more than 15 years. Gene was proud to be a 32nd Degree Mason. Gene married Janette (Bonds) Burks on August 9, 1971 in Stillwater, where they made their home until his retirement as the DHS Administrator in Payne County in 1987. During his retirement, he and Janette traveled extensively, spending their winters in South Texas, their summers fishing, and made friends wherever they went. They have made their home in Burns Flat, Oklahoma for the last 8 years. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Billie Ann Ridings, a son Kelly Mark Brown, and one grandson Chad Alan Davenport. Survivors include his wife Janette, three daughters: Teresa White and husband Frank of Broken Arrow, Oklahomaa; Marcia Davenport and husband Rick of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Linda Peaden and husband John of Owasso, Oklahoma; and two stepsons, Jerry Burks and wife Peggy and Tom Burks and wife Jill, all of Reydon, Oklahoma. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren and one sister, Sharron Ruhlen and husband Ray of Seattle, Washington. Gene will be missed by a host of family and friends. Memorial may be made to Encompass Home Health, Weatherford, Oklahoma, or your local home health care provider.
