Childers passed away Sunday, March 12, 2006, from a recent stroke at the age of 79, surrounded by his family in Medford, Oregon. Thomas was born on a ranch in Stillwater, Oklahoma. For the past 55 years he resided in Eagle Point, Oregon. Tom is survived by his wife Jean, whom he met at the age of 11 and then later married at age 20. They recently celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. Tom is also survived by his son, Gary; daughter, Terri; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Manford and mother, Edith and a grandson. Tom served his country during World War II as a member of the US coast guard. He was stationed on a naval frigate out of San Diego, California. Tom was passionate about his hobbies. He was an excellent painter, flint knapper, fisherman, boat builder, skin-diver, hunter, craftsman and a mentor to many. Although he was a self-taught artist, his works will continue to be enjoyed by many. His special interests included Indian history and being a member of the Crater Rock museum in Central Point. In his spare time he spent 35 plus years in the lumber industry. He got his last Elk on his 75th birthday and continued to hunt until the fall of 2005. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 17th at the Veterans Cemetery in Eagle Point. Following the service a memorial celebration will be held at the Crater Rock Museum in Central Point. Arrangements are in the care of Perl Funeral Home. Tom will be greatly missed by family and friends.
