Douglas Collins, Jr., 96, died Wednesday, February 26, 2003 at his home in Camilla, Ga. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Camilla, Ga., today at 3 p.m. The Rev. Joe Beauchamp will officiate. Born November 23, 1906 at Flint, Ga., Collins was the son of Addie Lee (Martin) and George Douglas Collins, Sr. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1929 and received a Masters Degree from University of Tennessee in 1932. In September 1945, he married the former Hazel Rebecca Swearingen of Robertson County, Tenn. For over thirty years, he worked as an agricultural statistician at the Crop Reporting Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, working in North Carolina, Washington D.C. and Tennessee. Upon his retirement in 1964, he returned to Mitchell County with his wife and daughters to operate the family farm where he was an early participant in managed tree farming. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church, which he served as treasurer for 23 years. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Seth Harp, Columbus, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Anne Douglas Collins and Bruce Crauder, Stillwater; brother and sister-in-law, Marion and Ann Collins, Camilla, Ga.; four grandchildren, Mary Rebecca Harp, Houston, Texas, Leslee Harp Shannon and her husband, Stephen, Dallas, Texas, Douglas Collins Crauder and Robert "Robbie" Collins Crauder, Stillwater; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years; his parents; sister, Laurie Marion Collins; and brothers, Julian Walden Collins, and William Martin Collins. ******************************************************
