Services were held at Ava, Mo., for Mrs. Mary J. Davis, mother of three Stillwater residents. Mrs. Davis, a former resident of Payne county, passed away at her home near Ava, Mo., Jan. 4, 1941, at the age of 79 years. She died of pneumonia contracted after an attack of the flu. Her husband, J.R. Davis, preceded her in death, Sept. 8, 1938. Twelve of 16 children are living. Survivors include Mrs. Alta Moore, 610 Lowry Street; Mrs. Janie Givens, Rex apartments, East Nineth Ave., and Mrs. Bella Cherry, 126 Duncan Street. Others are Thurman Davis of Coyle; Mrs. Elnora Howard, Fresno, Calif.; Mrs. Alice Gregory, Springfield, Mo.; Mrs. Anna Isaacs and Mrs. Fannie Goff of Cushing and Walter, Frank, Roy and Sam of Ava, Mo. Besides the 12 children Mrs. Davis is survived by 72 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren. Genealogy notes: Mary was born November 9, 1862 in the area of Douglas county Missouri. Named Mary James McClain. (James for her father who died fighting in the Civil War.) Everyone just called her "Jimmie". She was the daughter of James McClain and Louisa Frances Sisney. Mary married Jesse Richard Davis on March 29, 1878 in Tigres, Missouri, Douglas co. In 1905 the family left Missouri and settled in Payne county Oklahoma. Some of the older children traveled by train from Missouri to Oklahoma while Mary and Jesse and the younger children traveled by covered wagon with their personal belongings. They came to work in the cotton fields. Mary's four other children who preceded her in death were; Cora Davis Hamilton, Edna C. Davis, Ephraim J. Davis (Died WWI) and Herbert Allan Davis.
