Fleeca was born to Lola May Leffler Clifton and Earl Clifton in Talala, Oklahoma on Jan. 3, 1914. She was raised in Bartlesville, graduating from Bartlesville College High School. She studied creative writing at Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee. In early summer of 1937, Fleeca met George Dunaway at a dance held on the Woolaroc Ranch. George was a Phillips Petroleum Geologist and Fleeca was a friend of Frank Phillips' daughter. Fleeca was married to George Alton Dunaway on Aug. 28, 1937. Following the evening marriage, the couple danced to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys at the famous Cain's Ballroom. The Dunaways moved to Cushing in 1947, where George worked for Blackwell Oil and Gas, owned by RC Jones. Fleeca was a busy mother raising three sons, George, Larry and Richard. Fleeca was an avid naturalist, who wrote a weekly syndicated column, "World of Nature" for the Tulsa World for over 20 years. She was the founding President of the Gladiolus unit of the Cushing Garden Club which is still an active club today. Fleeca was a member of the Oklahoma Council of Nationally Accredited Flower Show Judges. She traveled all over the state and the nation judging flower shows. She spoke regularly to community groups about flower arranging, gardening and bird watching. Fleeca was a member of the Payne County Election Board, an active worker for the Democratic Party, a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts, a past President of the PTA, and an avid bridge player. Fleeca was a talented crafter and enjoyed traveling all over the world with George in their later years. Mrs. Dunaway is survived by her sons, George and wife Susan, from Springfield, Ill., Larry and wife Dorothy of Sarasota, Fla., Richard and wife Robin, of Cushing. Grandchildren include John Dunaway of Oklahoma City, Brian Dunaway of Culver City, Calif., Abram Dunaway of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Stephanie Dunaway of Frisco, Texas., Great Grand Daughters Sarah and Elizabeth Dunaway, as well as Great Great Grandson Braxton Dunaway of Edmond, Okla. Fleeca was preceded in death by her parents, Lola and Earl and her husband, George. Funeral Services for Fleeca C. Dunaway will be at 2 pm, Thursday Jan. 25 at the First United Methodist Church in Cushing with Rev. Ted Uhlig officiating. Donations to the National Audubon Society at audubon.org can be made in memory of Fleeca Dunaway. Visitation for Fleeca will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2007 at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home in Cushing from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Condolences and an online guest book are available at www.palmarlerfh.com.
