Okla. Archives. ************************************************************ JULY 14, 2002: Haines Doctor H.M. Haines, DVM, 81, long time Altus area veterinarian, died Friday July 12, 2002 at Jackson County Memorial Hospital. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the Memorial Chapel at the Kincannon Funeral Home with Bill Osborne officiating. Burial will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of the Kincannon Funeral Home. Harold Monroe Haines was born Nov. 22, 1920 in Wilson, Kan. to Charles E. and Terry Theresa (Spunaugle) Haines. He graduated high school at Winfield, Kan. in 1938. He then attended and graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. He entered the Army in 1943. The United States government paid for him to got to veterinary school because they needed meat inspectors. He was released from the Army after 14 months. He married Eunice M. McCreary on July 13, 1944 in Winfield, Kansas. To this union, three children were born. Dr. Haines was the first veterinarian in southwest Oklahoma. He arrived in Altus in 1946 to inspect meat at the slaughter house for the government. He would continue to for over 30 years. There were over two hundred dairies in the area. They moved into a garage apartment on North Hudson and Mrs. Haines would assist with surgeries which were performed on the dining room table. They bought the current location in 1947. They operated a large and small animal practice and went on many "Country Calls" to assist farmers with sick animals. When Craterville Amusement Park was at Lake Altus, Dr. Haines was called to remove a tumor from an elephant's mouth. When he returned to Altus, a woman with a sick parakeet was waiting to see him. He also operated the dog pound for the City of Altus. He served as Past President of Elks Lodges, Past President of Panhandle Veterinary Association and Secretary of the Shortgrass Veterinary Association. He enjoyed farming, especially raising cattle, camping, hunting, reading and traveling. He was a member of the Altus Roundup Club and the Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Eunice Haines in February of 2001, and his parents. His brother, Dr. Charles E. Haines DVM, passed away just two hours after Harold in Mt. Home Ark. He is survived by his two daughters, Terry Adams and husband Mike of Altus and Kerry Charlton of Aloha, Ore.; his son Ki Haines of Houston, Texas; sister-in-law Marge Haines of Mt. Home, Ark.; two grandchildren, Marcie Kelly and husband Tom of Stillwater, OK and Jeana Moon and husband Stuart of Aloha, Ore; four great-grandchildren, Gage and Alexis Kelty and Whittney and Abi Moon.
