A viewing was held at Bring's Broadway Chapel Saturday for family and friends, followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. Burial followed in TMP East Lawn. Hesser was born in Glencoe March 22, 1919. When he was a young man, a farming accident severed the fingers on his right hand, literally cutting short a promising minor league baseball career and his dream of becoming a surgeon. Undeterred, he embarked on a series of careers ranging from a restaurant owner and oil field worker in Oklahoma to an ambulance driver and hospital administrator at the Benson Hospital. In the early 1960's, he went back to school to become a teacher, a career that gave him a great deal of satisfaction. He later returned to the University of Arizona to obtain a master's degree in chemistry. He taught chemistry at Douglas High School until 1969. He later moved to Sahuarita Junior High, where he taught for 15 years. He served as athletic trainer at both districts. He retired from teaching in 1986. Hesser enjoyed playing bridge, collecting coins and watching sports on television. He and his two sons spent many happy hours rooting for their favorite team, the UofA Basket Cats. He also loved to fish. He contended that every day spent fishing added a bonus day to one's life, which may explain how he survived a major heart attack, a triple bypass and three cardiologists. Hesser loved his children and was very proud of them. He devoted himself to caring for his youngest child, Chris, after Chris sustained serious brain injuries in a car accident. His patience and tenderness was truly touching to behold. Although he faced many hardships in his life, he met each one with courage and determination, refusing to let adversity get him down or diminish his love of life. Even at the end of his life, when his heart condition had worsened beyond hope, he would not give in, stating until the end that life is too sweet to give up. Hesser is preceded in death by his first wife, Lael. He is survived by his wife, Elise Littrell Hesser; children, John W. (Dena) Hesser, M.D., Carol (Larry) Dempster and Norman "Chris" Hesser; grandchildren, Shannon, Erin, Lindsey, Kim, Mike, Jennifer and Mandy; and two siblings, Nadine (Lyle) Barnes and Bertha (Charles) Rushmore.
