He retired in 1989. Schatz died at The Renaissance of Stillwater on Saturday, June 29, 2002, at 3:10 p.m. at the age of 92. Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Strode Funeral Home Chapel with Father Peter and Deacon Bill Moler officiating. Burial will follow in Fairlawn Cemetery under the direction of Strode Funeral Home. Schatz was born Aug. 31, 1909, in Ripley to Fenning Lynn and Elizabeth Agnes (Scally) Schatz. He lived on a farm west of Ripley until 1918, when his family moved to Stillwater. He graduated from Stillwater High School in 1929. His family, being musically inclined, formed the Schatz Family Band and played at local Payne County functions until the 1920s. Schatz was the family's snare drum player. The Schatz Family Band played on the east inside stairway during the dedication ceremony of Payne County Courthouse. On Oct. 10, 1938, he married Mabel May Lane in Perry. During their marriage, they started three businesses: Schatz Brothers' Painting Company, Schatz Properties and Fort Knowledge Discovery Center. A previous marriage to Ethna Aileen Rea ended in divorce in 1934. From a very early age, Schatz was introduced to the game of golf by his father, who established their own golf course on the family farm. He won his first tournament at the age of 16 and carried on an illustrious local golfing career for the next 65 years. Though whippet-thin and extremely modest, Schatz developed a game that was one of the finest in the state of Oklahoma for the best part of five decades. He won at the city level and the state level consistently with precision and strength. He was twice an Oklahoma Seniors Champion in 1960 and 1963. His performance prompted the venerable Otis Wiles to write, "Jim handles his golf tools like you would handle a fork and knife." His golfing reputation began to grow when he won the first City of Stillwater championship in 1926. He also competed in the first Oklahoma high school tournament in 1928 and soon thereafter began to smash course records in the area. One of his fondest memories was when on Nov. 30, 1931, he played with the legendary Walter Hagen and trick-shot artist Joe Kirkwood an exhibition at the Meadow Lake Golf Course in Enid. In addition, he also had an exhibition with Patty Berg, one of the all-time greatest players in women's golf. A man of dry wit and disarming grace, Schatz was one of those men who truly made golf a gentleman's game. Schatz was one of the original 25 members of the Stillwater Golf and Country Club, which was organized in June 1965. Survivors include three daughters, Anita Rolon and her husband Harvey of Houston, Texas, Margaret Aguilar of Stillwater and Helen Cole and her husband Tim of Perkins; two sons, Charles Schatz and his wife Sandy of Stillwater and Mark Schatz of Stillwater; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be grandsons Jeff Schatz, Mike Aguilar, Jim Aguilar, Tony Aguilar, Steven Cole and David Cole. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Schatz, Zachary Rabinovitz, Nathan Cole, Eric Vaughn, Sammy Dietrich and Jacob Johnston.
