She was born in Wellston to Jesse William Nichols and Alice (Cochran) Nichols on Nov. 29, 1912. Her early school years were spent in Wellston and she later attended and graduated from Stillwater High School. She eloped with Joseph D. Ross to Perry on Oct. 27, 1932, and has lived in the Glencoe area since that time. Most of their married life they farmed and in the late 19 40's upgraded their dairy and milked cows until retiring in 1968. She enjoyed traveling in the couple's camper, gardening, flowers, birds and crossword puzzles. During their children's school years, she was active in PTA, and she and her husband served as class parents several years and enjoyed trips with the classes, as well as with the FFA and FHA chapters. For many years, in the mid 1970's and early 1980's, the couple had a weekly route to collect newspapers and aluminum cans from Stillwater residents. Proceeds were donated to the Diamond Valley Community Church with some of the funds being designated for the Diamond Valley Ross Memorial Fund. Through this recycling endeavor, the couple met many new friends, which suited Opal as she enjoyed people and had a listening ear and was a faithful confidante. Prior to her death, she was the oldest living member of the Diamond Valley Community Church, where she attended Sunday School since 1940 until failing health took its toll. During those years she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School classes. For a time, she and her husband were sponsors of the Christian Endeavor group. She served on the church Good Cheer Committee for 24 years doing what she loved to do - serving and encouraging others, spreading cheer and goodwill. She always welcomed visiting evangelists, pastors, family and friends into her home. After her husband's death in 1985, she moved to Glencoe and in 1991 moved to a nursing home in Stillwater where she resided until her death. Besides her husband, she is predeceased by her parents; two sisters, Pearl Henderson and Jewell Smith; and one brother, Elmer Nichols.
