Lewis Earl M. Lewis, 86, Stillwater, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at Grace Living Center. Services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church. Rev. Stanley M. Warfield Jr. will officiate. Interment will be at the Sunset Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home. Lewis was born Feb. 4, 1915, in Wheaton, Ill., to Roy D. Lewis and Carrie (Tousley) Lewis. He married Lillian Payne June 6, 1942, in Houston, Texas. She died Nov. 26, 1986. He then married Betty Dahms June 14, 1991, in Stillwater. He grew up on a wheat and cattle ranch east of Amarillo, Texas, and drove a big oil pull Rumley tractor at 13 years of age. Lewis attended Texas A&M University and graduated in 1942 with a BS degree in Agricultural Engineering. In 1962, he earned a MS degree in agricultural engineering from Oklahoma State University. In 1942, he entered the armed services as a second lieutenant. He was assigned to the Fifth Armored Division on the West Coast. In 1943, he went overseas to England with the largest Armada of ships that ever crossed the Atlantic. He crossed the English Channel on D-Day plus 2. In France, he was assigned as a combat liaison officer attached to Gen. George Patton's Third Army. His savior Jesus was traveling with him through the battles across France or he never would have made it. After the war, he remained in Europe for two years and worked in agriculture with the armed services. Lewis returned to the United States in 1948 and retired from the service. He was employed by Southwestern Public Service Company of Amarillo as division sales and advertising manager. In 1956, he came to Stillwater and accepted a position with the OSU Cooperative Extension Service as a manager of the Oklahoma Farm Electric Council and as a Extension Rural Electrification Specialist in the Agricultural Engineering Department. After 17 years, he went into business for himself. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, York Rite Mason, Golden Kiwanis, past president of the Payne County Chapter of the National Association of Federal Employees, Stephen Minister and member of the Jim Richardson Class at church and a Mobile Meals worker. Lewis is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Lillian, his son, Tousley, three brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Betty Lewis; step-daughter, Jan Ette Jungers, Stillwater; step-son, Kermit Dahms, Stillwater; seven grandchildren Benjamin McLean, Matt Jungers, Katie Jungers, Becca Jungers, Kelsey Dahms, Devon Dahms and David Dahms. She was born Aug. 16, 1913, in Horse Cave, Ky., to Frank Brooks Minnix and Mary Eddie (Fergusson) Minnix. She married Roger Howard Williams April 28, 1940, in Oklahoma City. He died in 1993. When she was young the family moved to Anadarko and lived there about 10 years before they moved to Enid. She graduated from Enid High School. She attended Phillips University and Oklahoma State University. After she was married the couple moved to Washington, D.C. where she worked in the Pentagon and was a member of the National City Christian Church. In 1954 they moved to Stillwater where she has resided since. She was very active in her church and community. As her children were growing up she worked with Scouts and was very active in PTA and the Stillwater Child Study Group. Some of her hobbies were genealogy, sewing and knitting hats for babies at the hospital. Friendships were always very important to Hazel. She was a secretary at the OSU Graduate and Home Economics College. She was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). She was also a member of St. Cecelia National Secretary Association, CWF, Esther Group, 3M's Class, Home Economics Emeriti Dinner Club, OSU Branch Professional Secretary Association, past member of the Stillwater Child Study Club and the Sewing Club. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a brother, a sister and a son, Michael Ross Williams. She is survived by two daughters, Virginia and her husband Maj. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Norwood-Coffey-Leonard Chapel in Idabel. Tommy Hall will officiate. Burial will follow in the Canfield cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction Norwood-Coffey- Leonard Funeral Home. Huckabee was born March 20, 1934, in Idabel to Elmer C. and Clyde Rainey Huckabee. He was raised in Idabel by his adoptive parents, his aunt and uncle, Edgar and Mabel Huckabee. He attended Idabel schools. He graduated from Idabel Gray High School. Huckabee received a bachelor's degree in business from Oklahoma State University. He lived in Oklahoma City for a few years, working for GMAC. In the early 1960s, he moved to Stillwater, where he worked for the Swan Rubber Company. While in Stillwater, he attended the Presbyterian Church. He had lived in Tulsa for the past year. He is preceded in death by both his birth and adoptive parents and his sister, Barbara. Huckabee is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Brian Huckabee and wife Darita, Tulsa; grandchildren, Mary Page Huckabee and Alex DeLoach Huckabee, both of Tulsa; sisters, Kathryn Rayzor, Pilot Point, Texas, and Sue Brown, Denton, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. ****************************************************** Catherine Pierce Catherine (McKenna) Pierce, 88, died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2001. A memorial service with Father Bob Schlitt presiding will be Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church. At her request her body will be donated to the O.U. Medical Center. At a later date a headstone will be placed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Oklahoma City. Pierce was born in Wichita, Kan., Aug. 19, 1913, to Peter Joseph and Rose Anne (O'Neill) McKenna. She married Alfred Lee Roy Pierce April 20, 1946, in Oklahoma City. He died Oct. 20, 1982. She was a member of St. Frances Xavier Catholic Church and was a bookkeeper. She was predeceased by her parents, husband and six brothers. Interment will be at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Avery under the direction of Strode Funeral Home. She was born April 29, 1909, in Avery to Fred and Anna (Meyer) Oestmanm and graduated from Avery schools. She married Henry W. Ropers June 4, 1939, in Avery and lived in Graniola until 1959. She moved to rural Stillwater, then moved into the city in 1974. She enjoyed sewing, baking, gardening and was an avid reader. She was a member of Salem Lutheran Church. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, two brothers and three sisters. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home. Young was born Sept. 27, 1939, in Hunter to William H. and Nettie (Biggs) Young. He married Mary E. Vasquez Dec. 8, 1958, in Enid. The couple divorced and he later married Sherri Kirkpatrick Aug. 12, 1978, in Perry. He graduated from high school in Enid in 1957. He went to receive his bachelor's degree in accounting from Enid Business College by attending night school and working for Ditch Witch. He continued to work there for 17 years, leaving as the manager of general ledger accounting. He then purchased and ran the H&R Block Franchise in Perry for five years. In 1984, he sold the business and moved to Tulsa to work for Maloney-Crawford Oil Field Tank Company as the accountant. He later became self-employed and worked this past tax season at Jackson-Hewitt Tax Services. Young loved baseball. At the age of 19, he was scouted by the Milwaukee Braves. He also played baseball on the Enid ball team Exchange Club Little Giants as pitcher. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards and was a little league baseball coach and an assistant wrestling coach in Morrison. He was affectionately known by his family as "Pooh" and will be remembered as a die-hard Cubs fan. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Perry, Moose Lodge of Stillwater 2089, Moose Legion Member achieving the degree of fellowship. He is preceded in death by his parents. Services, with Father Eugene Luke presiding, were at 2 p.m. Thursday at Strode Chapel in Stillwater. Interment followed at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Strode Funeral Home directed the arrangements. Layes was born in Scranton, Ark. Sept. 25, 1927, to Joe and Bertha (Besselman) Layes. He married Doris Bates Nov. 23, 1948, in Scranton. The couple lived in Fort Smith, Ark., where he worked at ESSO Service Station. In 1956 they moved to Stillwater where he worked as a mechanic for Ward Buick. In 1961 they moved to Perkins and in 1970 he went to work for the Quapaw Company as a mechanic. He later became a foreman at the rock quarry in Drumright. When he retired in 1991 the couple moved to Cove Lake where he volunteered for the Forest Service. He then worked for the Corps of Engineers out of the Arkansas office until June 12, 2001, when poor health forced him to resign. He enjoyed spending his time fishing, bowling and golfing. He was a Catholic and a member of Knights of Columbus and Lions Club. He was predeceased by his parents, three sisters and four brothers. In addition to his wife he is survived by four sons, Bill Layes Jr. of Ripley, George David Layes and his wife Marjie of Plainview, Texas, Mike Layes of Perkins and Roy Layes and his wife Jeannie of Stillwater; one daughter, Sandra Kay Stanton of Perkins; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert Layes of Van Buren, Ark. and three sisters, Anna Marie Schmitz of St. Louis, Mo., Elizabeth Fritchie and Josephine Kastner both of Scranton. Wallace was born Aug. 24, 1930, in Amarillo, Texas, to Paul S. and Roberta Lee Mathers. She lived in Hereford, Texas, and graduated from Hereford High School in 1947. She attended Christian College in Missouri before transferring to the University of Oklahoma, to obtain her degree in library science. Upon graduation in 1951, she worked at the University of Oklahoma Library in the catalog department, specializing in rare book collection. In 1955 she became a full time mother and homemaker. Wallace met her husband, Harry E. Wallace, in 1949, and married him Dec. 29, 1952. They lived in Norman until moving to Stillwater in 1997. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, reading, crafts, genealogy and antique collecting. She also enjoyed working in the church library at the University Christian Church in Norman, where she was a charter member and at Sunnybrook Christian Church in Stillwater. She was preceded in death by her parents and one son, Samuel William Wallace. She is survived by her husband, Harry; daughter, Suzy Adamson, and son-in-law, Robert Adamson; grandchildren, Ben Adamson and Rachel Adamson, all of Stillwater; one brother, Robert Mathers, and sister-in-law, Pat Mathers, of Wickenburg, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Joseph B. He married Deloris Dawes March 12, 1950. The couple lived in Colorado for 30 years before they moved to Ozark in 1991. He was an industrial x-ray technician and enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family camping in Colorado. He was predeceased by his parents. Her first husband, Talmadge Wells, died in 1936. She married Fred James Jones April 3, 1939, in Pawhuska. He died Feb. 14, 1995. She was a homemaker and a member of Countryside Baptist Church. There will be no services but his ashes will be spread in Oklahoma where he lived and worked. He was born Nov. 13, 1936, in rural Washita County. Parents are Edith Bellah Hickman (deceased) and D.W. and Ellava Hickman of Ardmore. He attended schools in Cordell and Clinton and college at Weatherford. He worked 33 years for the Soil Conservation Service, USDA, and retired at the state office of USDA in Stillwater. Hickman was a cartographer and prepared most of the soil survey publications of Oklahoma counties. He was also a licensed land surveyor in Oklahoma. He married Alice Bumgarner. The marriage ended in divorce. On May 31, 1981, he married Elizabeth Ann and the couple lived in Stillwater. He enjoyed RVing , fishing and friends at the lake. He was predeceased by his mother, Edith Bellah Hickman. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his father and stepmother of Ardmore; son, Darren W. He was raised in Blanchard and attended Sunnyside Schools. He moved to Stillwater in 1939. He married Dovie Vick Nov. 9, 1941, at Dennison, Texas. She died in 1946. He married Leslianna E. Thatcher April 5, 1953, in Stillwater. She preceded him in death in 1976. He worked for Oklahoma State University for over 25 years in the physical plant and retired in 1959. Following his retirement, he operated his own lawn care business taking care of gardens, lawns and trees until he became ill. He was a lifetime member of the Stillwater Independent Order of Oddfellows and a member of the Bible Missionary Church. He returned to Blanchard in 2000. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Archie, Sam, Charlie and Ed McClain; two sisters, Mary Bell Bailey and Josie Aday. He was later assigned to the Naval Air Station, Ford Island, at Pearl Harbor as C.P.O. of mail operations for Com- Air-Pac. After he was discharged he returned to the Postal Service. He retired in 1973. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, American Legion Hanner-Sharp Post 129, the National Association of Federal Employees and the American Cancer Society. Morris, 96, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at the Stillwater Medical Center. Funeral services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Prospect View Cemetery, Pierce, Neb. Rev. Sheri Lodel, pastor of Pierce's Christ Lutheran Church will officiate. Strode Funeral Home of Stillwater is in charge of arrangements. She was born April 12, 1905, to William and Emma (Andreasen) Guthmann in Walnut, Iowa. The family moved to Plainview, Neb., in 1906 where she grew up and graduated from Plainview High School in 1924 as president of her class. From the age of 12, she worked in her family's general store. Following high school, she attended Wayne (Nebraska) State Normal School in summers to maintain teaching certification. For four years, Mrs. Luebke Morris taught in one-room rural schools in Pierce County, Neb., until she married Robert Carl Luebke in Pierce, Neb., June 12, 1928. During World War II her husband worked in defense industry locations near Fremont and Hastings, Neb. After the war, the family settled in Fremont, where Luebke died Feb. 1, 1948. After her first husband's death, she returned to school at Midland Lutheran (Nebraska) College. For 13 years she taught in rural schools near Fremont and in elementary schools in Fremont and Omaha. On June 14, 1959, she married Thomas J. Morris of Fremont, Neb., and became a partner in her husband's business, Morris Electric Company. They sold the business in 1982. Morris died June 10, 1985. In June of 1991, she moved to Stillwater to be near her son and his family. During her lifetime, she was a member of several clubs, including Business and Professional Women's Club, the Izaak Walton League, Altrusa International and Delta Kappa Gamma. She had been a member of several ELCA Lutheran congregations and at the time of her death was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Stillwater. She is survived by her only child, Dr. Neil Luebke and his wife Phyllis of Stillwater; two granddaughters, Dr. Anne Luebke and her husband Dr. Ian Dickerson of Miami Beach, Fla.; and Karen Hale and her husband Alan of Dallas, Texas; three great-grandchildren, Kathleen and Eric Hale and Claire Dickerson. Heath, 85, died at his home in Ocale, Fla., Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001. He was born in Marie, Aug. 12, 1916, and married Opal Wells while attending Oklahoma A&M College in 1935. After forming a partnership with Jackson Dudley in the early 1940s, they created Dudley-Heath Drilling Co., in Carmi, Ill., later headquartering in Stillwater. In 1956 a horse owned by the pair won the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes. D&H Stables is credited with starting thoroughbred breeding in Florida. Needles was the first Florida-bred horse to win a Kentucky Derby. Heath is survived by his wife of 66 years; one son, Bonnie M. Hatfield was born Nov. 25, 1931, to Bill and Katie (Holtzclaw) Hatfield in Drumright. He attended and graduated from Cushing High School in 1950. He enlisted in the U.S. Army that year and served throughout the following years including two tours in Korea, and during the Vietnam War. He married Vonnie Gammel on March 3, 1952, in Tulsa. This marriage ended in divorce in 1965. On Oct. 8, 1968, he married Joan Silkwood Courtright in Oakland, Calif. Hatfield retired from the Army Aug. 31, 1970, as a 1SGT. He received many commendations including The National Defense Service Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster, Expert Rifle, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars, Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Valorous Unit Award, Sharpshooter Pistol and Good Conduct Medal. In 1971 he began employment at Sooner Air Gas. He retired as district manager from Sooner Air Gas in 1993. He was a member of the Black Horse Association and the Retired 3rd Infantry Division Association. He is predeceased by his parents. Hatfield is survived by his wife of the home; five sons, Troy Lee Hatfield and his wife Lori of Sand Springs, Roy Courtright of Stillwater, Jim Courtright of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Terry Courtright and his wife Jan of Stillwater and Dennis Courtright and his wife Ann of Portland, Ore. He also leaves behind four daughters and their spouses, Treva Fay of Tulsa, Jan and Tim Duncan of Verden, Sue and John Kugel of Stillwater, and Denise and Lynn Roberts, also of Stillwater. Wakefield was born March 21, 1923, in Kremlin Township, Garfield County to Clive Elmer and Eathel Mary (Nickell) Reichman. She married Paul Wakefield Jan. 29, 1944, in Falls Church, Va. He died in 1972,. She was one of three children born to her parents. She attended grade school at Jefferson and Norwood, Stillwater. Wakefield graduated from Stillwater High School in 1942. She was a World War II Navy veteran. She enlisted on June 15, 1943, and left on the Sooner Special from Oklahoma City to Hunter College, NY for her military training. She was assigned to Oklahoma A&M College, where she received her Yeoman rating. Her assignments included the Naval Training School, Bronx, NY, NTSch (Y), Stillwater, and the U.S. Naval Barracks in Washington, D.C. She was discharged June 25, 1945. After marrying her husband, the couple remained in Virginia where they raised their family and owned and operated their own nursery business in Herndon, Va. After her husband's death in 1972, Wakefield and her three sons returned to Oklahoma in 1978. They owned and operated a nursery in Perkins. In 1986, she returned to Virginia to live with family, finally returning to Stillwater in 1988 until the present. During her last years, she worked extensively in the community providing care and assistance to many elderly individuals and their families. She was a compassionate and dedicated care giver. She will be dearly missed by the families she served. She was a member of the Southside Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and her brother, Harry. Wakefield is survived by three sons, Allen Wakefield, Virginia Beach, Va., Richard Wakefield, Warrenton, Va., and Harold Wakefield, Fredericksburg, Va.; 14 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one brother, Robert Reichman, Stillwater; many nieces, nephews and cousins in the Stillwater area. From there, he worked for a construction company for two years and then went to heavy equipment operator school in Pennsylvania. He then went back into construction working as a heavy equipment operator and retired in 1974. Jones is preceded in death by his parents, son, Samuel Jones, five brothers and five sisters. He is survived by his son, Jimmy Jones Jr. and wife Gina; three daughters, Linda Jefferson and husband Joe, Cynthia Bolden and Vanessa Jones; 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was a consultant for the Oklahoma City Zoo and a member of the Standards Committee. Jennings was born Oct. 16, 1917, in Montgomery City to Turner Milton and Mary Madelene Franklin Jennings. He was the ninth of 14 children. He confessed hope in Christ when he was young and became a member of St. John Baptist Church in Montgomery City. He also received his elementary education in Montgomery City. He was a gifted musician and furthered his skills through a special school of learning and attended Lincoln University to get approval of his music. He became a professor of music, opened a private school in St. Louis, Mo., and became the teacher and founder of the Jennings School of Music. He taught for more than 40 years. He traveled to many places with singing groups. In 1958 he became an ordained minister in St. Louis and in 1973 pastured the Highway to Heaven Church in St. Louis He married Polly Hawkins June 23, 1974. The couple had one son, Virgil Lee Jennings Jr. The family moved to Guthrie in 1986 where they were associated with many churches. In Nov. 1989 they moved to Stillwater where they joined Southside Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Larry Stafford and current Pastor Wayne Sanmann. He rendered music at several churches in Stillwater and felt love at all churches where everybody is somebody and Christ is all. Because of illness he was an inactive member of Southside Baptist Church. His greatest desire was to edify mankind for the cause of Christ as a minister and musician and felt by doing so his life would not have been in vain. He was a devoted father and loving and kind husband. He enjoyed life and made many friends. He was predeceased by his parents, seven sisters and five brothers. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Virgil Lee Jennings Jr. and his wife Shea Carter Jennings and grandson Demetris, all of Oklahoma City; a brother, Raymond Jennings and his wife Della of Montgomery City; a sister-in-law, Burley Gilstrap of Centreville, Ill.; and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives and friends. Services are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home of Cushing. McBride was born July 2, 1933, to Elva Ernest and Elizabeth O'Kelley McBride in Schlegal. He married Norma Todd Nov. 7, 1958, in Drumright. Following his retirement from the U.S. Army as a first sergeant Dec. 1, 1973, the couple moved to Agra, where they had lived for the past 22 years. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and spending as much time with his grandchildren as he could He is survived by his wife of over 42 years, of the home in Agra; three daughters, Renna McBride Crocker of Missouri, Vicki Weeks of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Katrina Evans of Rolla, Mo.; one son, Steven McBride of Agra; one sister, Willa Mae of Oklahoma City; one brother, Cecil McBride of Carney; six grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews. and other relatives and friends. Condolences to the McBride family may be e-mailed to . ****************************************************** Joseph Dickey Joseph Dickey, longtime retired minister, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, in the Linwood Village Nursing Home at the age of 94. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. in the First Church of God with Rev. Kevin Clouse, pastor, and Rev. Dave Middleton of Mannford, officiating. Services are under the direction of the Davis Funeral Home. Dickey was born April 15, 1907, in Lenapah to Jackson John Franklin and Florence Wiggley Dickey. While growing up he had lived in Paoli and Binger and when he was older moved to Cushing. He met his first and only love, Ada Lucille Harmon and they were married in 1926. She preceded him in death Feb. 14, 1983. Dickey had worked at Deep Rock Oil Refinery for 17 years. He became a youth director at Cushing Church of God for seven years and became a pastor for over 22 years. He had pastured at Okemah, Minden, La., Durant, Oaklawn, Mo., Okmulgee and Pine Bluff, Ark. In 1972 the couple moved back to Cushing and he became an evangelist, preaching several different states. He was still driving to Moore every other weekend to preach until he became ill one and one half years ago. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Gloria Moss and Doris Maxine Hixon. Survivors include two sons-in-law, Dale Hixon of Tulsa and J.D. Moss of Louisiana; grandchildren, DeAnn and husband Ronald Bridges of Pearcy, Ark., Rodney and wife Lori Moss of Vinita, Dalene and husband Phillip Bougis of Terlton, Randy Hixon, Eric Hixon and Mariss Porter, all of Tulsa; great-grandchildren, Chad, Ryan and Kelli Bridges, Tray and Makenzie Moss, Brandon and Adam Benedict and Kyle Bougis, Talisha, Jamie and Bradley Hixon, Britteny and Desney Hixon, Kristi, Amanda and Ronnie Dale Porter and Makayla Hixon; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Serving as casket bearers will be Rodney Moss, Ronald Bridges, Adam Benedict, Brandon Benedict, Eric Hixon and Randy Hixon. Burial will follow in the Harrell Cemetery. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday at Strode Chapel. Interment will be at IOOF Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home. Honeyman was born Nov. 30, 1921, to Frank Orr and Daisy King Honeyman. She was a loving daughter and very supporting to her parents and sisters. She graduated from Eureka High School and was a graduate of A&M College, now OSU. She loved sports and traveling. Honeyman taught school four years in Jennings. Later, she was employed by Oklahoma Natural Gas Co. in Stillwater. She transferred to Tulsa in 1969. After 40 years of service with ONG, she retired in 1986. Honeyman is preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and six brothers. She is survived by her sister, Daisy Marie Dennis of Henderson, Nev.; her sister-in-law, Mary Honeyman of Stillwater; a host of nephews, nieces, friends and family; and a very special friend, Louvinia Goodall of Tulsa. Ronald and Shirley of Riverside, CA assisted with the funeral arrangements. Swift was born Oct. 14, 1939, in Pawhuska, to Earl Sidney and Lala Mae (Collins) Swift. He married Marilyn Beth Croslin, Dec. 28, 1974, in Tulsa. He moved to Pawnee County in 1978. Swift was a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1957-1962. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and was a rancher. Swift is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Edna Roberts; and three brothers, Jr. Swift, Charlie Swift, and Bill Swift.
