A graveside service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. Rick Hermansen, associate pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church, officiating. There will be no viewing. Arrangements are under the direction of Grace Memorial Chapel. Following the service, friends and family are invited to the First Christian Church of Shidler for fellowship and refreshments. DiVall was born June 29, 1949, in Ponca City, the son of Robert Joe and Roberta Alyce Filson DiVall. He grew up in Shidler and graduated from high school there. He then attended Northern Oklahoma College and Oklahoma State University. He began a career in the oil industry at an early age working at his father's service station in Shidler, where he drove a bulk petroleum truck and delivered propane. He then went to work at Phillips in Shidler. After the Phillips closure, he worked for a while at Wal-Mart and Lowe's. At the time of his death, he was working for Kerr Oil Well Service on the pulling unit. DiVall was an avid pool player and enjoyed spending time with his children. He enjoyed taking them to Branson and visiting Silver Dollar City and he enjoyed fishing and shooting cans with his son. He also enjoyed gardening, especially raising tomatoes and searching for wild asparagus. His parents and one grandchild preceded him in death. He is survived by a son, Joseph DiVall of Oklahoma City; a daughter, Cody Wilson of Green Forest, Ark.; two brothers, Mike DiVall of Watauga, Texas, and Allen DiVall of Stillwater; and one grandchild. Contributions may be made in his memory to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, for cancer research, 825 NE 13th Street, Oklahoma City, Okla. 73104. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Helen Weaver Helen Lorene Weaver, 74, Stillwater, formerly of Osawatomie, Kan., died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Westhaven Nursing Home. She was born June 5, 1928, at Osawatomie and was one of seven children born to Alexander Louis and Mamie Mae (Landers) Weaver. She attended Osawatomie public schools and graduated from Osawatomie High School in 1946. She was a telephone operator for the Osawatomie Phone Company until they went to the dial system. She worked at the Osawatomie State Hospital for 18 years and retired in 1983. She was family oriented and her family was an important part of her life. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters and one brother. Survivors include three sisters, Mary P. Brocaw of Stillwater, Evelyn Diehm of Olathe, Kan. and Marjorie Weaver of Stillwater; a niece, Sharon Whitney of Stillwater; two nephews, David and Tom Whitney both of Stillwater; and many other relatives and friends. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jackie Evans Cushing resident Jackie Lloyd Evans, 69, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Hillcrest Hospital in Tulsa. Graveside services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Fairlawn Cemetery, north of Cushing. Palmer Funeral Home of Cushing is directing the arrangements. He was born in Webber Falls July 9, 1933, to William Oliver and Rose (Guffy) Evans. He was a graduate of Cushing High School. On April 16, 1954, he married Betty Louise Lamb in Cushing. The couple moved to Oklahoma City in 1960 where he was employed by Tinker Air Force Base and worked for the state. They returned to Cushing in 1986. He was a veteran of the Army and served during the Korean War. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Billy. Survivors include four daughters, Sheila Evans of Midwest City, Debbie Noel of Moore, and Sherry Whiteside and Gena Taylor, both of Maud; his mother, Rose Evans of Cushing; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. "Rusty" Banning, 80, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2002, in Stillwater. Services, with Dr. Bill Mitchell presiding, were today at 2 p.m. at Cooper Funeral Home in Tecumseh. Interment followed at Brown Cemetery. Cooper Funeral Home in Tecumseh directed the arrangements. He was born in Norman Oct. 7, 1921, to Frank and Myrtle (Bartholomew) Banning. He married Louise Goodson. After she died, he married Ruth Wilkinson Oct. 13, 1998, in Del City. He attended Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa. He worked in the aerospace industry as a scheduler with McDonnell-Douglas and worked on the Skylab and Gemini projects. He had lived in Tulsa, Lawton, Enterprise, Ala., Dothan, Ala., St. Charles Mo. and Lake Eufaula. During World War II, he was stationed with the Flying Tigers in China and India. He enjoyed trout fishing. In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by his parents, one brother and sister-in-law, Harvey and Hazel Banning. In addition to his wife of the home, he is survived by a son, Keith Banning and his wife Morgan of Jacksonville, Fla.; three step-sons, Billy Ray Goodson and his wife Brenda of Walwhorth, Wis., Mark Pringle and his wife Karen of Tecumseh and Denis Pringle of Tecumseh; two step-daughters, Paula Mertz and her husband Andy of Grayson, Ga. and Karen Redding and her husband Glen of Stillwater; a sister, Mae Mitchell and her husband Bill of Tecumseh; a brother, Lester Banning and his wife Juanita of Del City; grandchildren, Jessica Goodson, Noelle Goodson, Sarah Mertz, Benjamin Mertz, Corey Redding, Carie Hickerson, Tara Lee Pringle, Travis Pringle and Timber Pringle; and a number of other relatives and friends. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Blanche Elliott Cushing resident Blanche C. Elliott, 98, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Resthaven Nursing Home in Cushing. Graveside services, with Michael Dershem presiding, will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Lawson Cemetery, north of Yale. She was born in Quay June 22, 1904, to Edgar and Carrie Mae (Standley) Bailey. She married Harry Elliott Aug. 5, 1936, in Perry. She worked at the Sibs cafe in Yale and also worked in the fields with her father. She enjoyed gardening, raising bees and selling honey. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband and two sons, James and Timothy. Survivors include several grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews ****************************************************** October 2, 2002 Rev. William Jenkins Rev. William V. Jenkins, 91, died Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Integris Bass Hospital in Enid. Homegoing celebration will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen AME Church in Enid with Pastor Bonell Fields officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Enid under direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home of Perry. Jenkins was the son of John Henry and Maydora (Cherry) Jenkins. He was born May 7, 1911, in Pine Bluff, Ark. He attended public schools near Orlando and in Perry. On May 1, 1936, he and Willa Mae Nevins were married in Perry. He served his country as a member of the United States Army and retired from the Santa Fe Railroad. Rev. W.V. Jenkins received Christ as his personal Lord and Savior early in life. During his early years of Christian service he united with Mt. Olive AME Church of Perry. After moving to Enid, he united with St. Stephen AME Church until his retirement in the mid 1990's. He served as the Sunday school superintendent, was a steward and a member of the choir. He retired from pastoring but never from preaching. Rev. Jenkins was a former pastor of New Bethel AME in Pawnee, St. James AME in Hennessey, St. Paul AME in Guthrie and St. Stephen AME in Enid. As a pastor, Rev. Jenkins loved children, fellowship, teaching and preaching. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 29 of Enid. He will be greatly missed among those who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Myrtle Jenkins; three brothers, Robert C. Jenkins, Elmer Jenkins Sr. and Cleo Jenkins and two grandchildren, Michael Jenkins and Constance Swan. Survivors include his wife, Willa Mae; two daughters, O. Fay Swan and her husband Cozy, of Hawthorne, Calif. and Wilma Walker and her husband Dillard, of St. Louis, Mo.; one son, Steven Jenkins of Enid; two granddaughters, Wilnetta Jenkins of Hawthorne and Denise Johnson and her husband Dwayne, of Fontana, Calif.; two grandsons, Keith Walker of St. Louis, Mo. and Gary Cunningham of Wichita, Kan.; two great grandchildren, Daris and Deanna Johnson of Fontana, many foster children, several nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Vaughn John T. Vaughn, 75, retired aircraft worker, died at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. Memorial services will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Winfield, Kan. Clarence Mantz, a minister in the Arkansas City, Kan., congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses will officiate. Born Jan. 1, 1927, to Earnest and Lola Vaughn in Independence, Kan., he served in the Army during WWII and the Korean conflict. He was primarily known for his work as a minister of Jehovah's Witnesses, serving as such since 1960. He resided with his family in Wichita, Kan., then Winfield, Kan., for over 30 years, and retired from Cessna Aircraft at Strother Field at Wichita. He also worked for Boeing and Beechcraft in Wichita. In 1998, he moved to Pawnee, so that his son could assist in his care. He is survived in death by his wife, Marilyn; a daughter, Delores Kelley of Hutchinson, Kan., a son, Donald, of Regina, N.M., a son, Daniel, of Springfield, Mo., a daughter, Diane Hartman, with grandsons, Joshua and Kenneth Hartman, a son, Delbert of Pawnee and a son, David with grandsons, James and Nicholas. He is also survived by sisters, Bernadine Lowery and Loraine Ecret of Pawnee and Betty Ramsey of Chanute, Kan. He will lie in state Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. Strode Funeral Home is directing the arrangements. He was born in Stillwater Aug. 2, 1959, to Ikey and Elnora (Linzy) Sanders. He married Rilla Johnson. They were later divorced. He attended Stillwater schools and graduated from C.E. Donart High School. He lived in Stillwater most of his life. As a youth his membership was with the Church of God in Christ though he had attended fellowship with different churches throughout Stillwater. He was a car detailer. Poteet Funeral Home of Pawnee is in charge of arrangements. She was born May 16, 1935, in Pawnee, to Roy and Nettie (Worthy) Dallas. She moved to Red Rock when she was a senior in high school and returned to Pawnee in 1958. She married Loyd Roberson in Pawnee June 27, 1952. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Pawnee. She loved to cross stitch, go fishing, having house plants, working crossword puzzles, reading newspapers and visiting with friends. During her life, she worked at Cheathams, Emily Mills, Munsingerwear, NAPA, S and S Auto, ran a Mistletoe Express Route, and for six years, helped run Green Light Auto. She also helped with the farming by running a swather. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother and sister-in- law, Wilbur Sr. and Jo Ella Dallas and a nephew, Leroy Carter. Services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church in Yale. Services were officiated by the Rev. Steve Lopp. Interment was at Jennings Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Chapman- Black Funeral Home of Cleveland. Adams was born June 22, 1930, in Liebenthal, Kan., to Joseph and Emma (Unrein) Legleiter. She was reared and received her education in Liebenthal. As a young lady, she started to wait tables in a local restaurant. She later moved to Russell, Kan., where she met Alvin Wayne Richmond. The two where married in Tucumcari, N.M., April 20, 1953. The couple made their first home in Russell in a one room garage apartment. They later moved to Ada. In the late 1950s, the couple moved to Wynona and then soon after in the early 1960s, they moved to a farm north of Jennings. While living in Jennings, they opened up the Jennings Laundry Mat. In 1975, the couple lived in Hominy, returning to Jennings in 1990. Adams worked in several diners in Hominy, Jennings, Yale and at the Hickory House in Cleveland. Her first husband died Nov. 3, 1990. She married Wayne Adams in Las Vegas, Nev., June 4, 1994. They returned to make their home in Yale where Rose has lived since. She loved to watch and feed her humming birds, playing bingo and being with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Jennings. She is preceded in death by her first husband, parents, three sisters, Helen, infant sister, Mildred, and another sister, Mildred; two brothers, Alois and Jerome. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Ceres Cemetery, north of Perry. Rev. Lonnie Rutherford will officiate. Services are under direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home. Koch was the daughter of Henry and Ernestina (Rader) Voss and was born April 23, 1916, at Perry. She was a 1935 graduate of Garber High School. On Aug. 3, 1935, she and Ivan Koch were married at Tonkawa. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church. Her parents, six brothers and three sisters preceded her in death. In addition to her husband of the home in Perry, she is survived by two sons, Gene Koch and his wife, Phyllis, and Harley Koch and his wife, Kay, all of Ponca City; two daughters, Sue Lowry and her husband, Jerry, Perry, and Glennice Diebold and her husband, Ed, Ponca City. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the American Diabetes Foundation. ****************************************************** October 5, 2002 Dudley Barefoot Dudley Barefoot, 77, Stillwater, died Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at his home. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church on Monday at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Stanley M. Warfield Jr. will preside. Internment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in Stillwater. Services are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home. Barefoot was born to Thomas "Callie" and Bessie Lee (Holt) Barefoot, December 7, 1924, in Hollis where he graduated from high school in 1943. He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Corps as an aviation cadet and served overseas in the South Pacific. He graduated as a First Lieutenant and was a navigator of B-29's. He flew 24 combat missions for a total of 360 combat hours in the Central Pacific with the 20th Air Force. He was awarded the Air Medal with two clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. After being discharged, he attended Oklahoma A&M for three years as an engineering student. He was recalled to active duty in the Air Force from April 1951 to 1952, serving in the Korean War. On Jan. 13, 1952, he and Betty Darlene Wurth were married in Shawnee. He graduated from OSU with a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering in 1953 and a Masters degree in 1968. Barefoot was Superintendent of the Irrigation Research Station in Altus for 10 years. He returned to Stillwater in 1964 to teach and do research at OSU. He served at OSU as an Assistant Professor from 1969-1978 and Associate Professor from 1978 until retirement in 1986. He was also a Student Advisor during this time. He was a professional engineer and consultant. He received the Twenty-Five Years Service Award from the division of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture of OSU in October of 1978 and the Twenty-Five Years Membership Award from the American Society of Agricultural Engineers in 1979. Barefoot was a member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers, through which he served on the National Student Affiliate Clubs Committee, was Chairman of the Student Activities Committee at the 1974 National Meeting, and served on the Southwest Region Honors and Awards Committe of which he was Chairman in 1977. He had articles published in several publications throughout his career. Barefoot was also a member of Cowboy Country Sams and an annual judge at the State FFA and 4-H Club contests. He and his wife loved to travel in their RV and be with friends. He was an avid OSU fan and attended all sporting events. Barefoot had a notorious sense of humor, outgoing personality, never met a stranger and brought laughter to many lives. His parents and two brothers, Chester Lee Barefoot and Guy O. Barefoot, preceded him in death. In addition to his wife Betty of the home in Stillwater, he is survived by two sons, Terry Lee Barefoot and his wife Marie of San Diego, Calif., and Rick Lynn Barefoot of Stillwater; two grandchildren, Kerry and Jenny of San Diego, Calif.; one sister-in-law, Edna Barefoot of San Angelo, Texas. Jim Marlin Jim Marlin, often called "Fish" by his friends, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2002, in Farmville, Va. Arrangements are being made by Doyne-Burger-Davis Funeral Home in Farmville. A resident of Burkeville, Va., he was born May 17, 1948, in Stillwater and graduated from high school there in 1966. He lived in Sapulpa and Tulsa for many years before moving to Virginia. Survivors include his wife, Vicky, of Burkeville; a son, Thor of Eufaula; step- daughter, Carrie Johnston of Asheville, N.C.; brother, Allen Marlin and wife Judy of Oklahoma City, sister, Linda Broaddus and husband Guy of Sapulpa; and one grandson and several nieces and nephews. Burial will follow in Grace Hill Cemetery under the direction of Brown-Dugger Funeral Home. Dowell was born April 8, 1916, in Chandler, the daughter of Walter C. and Vera Mae (Maxwell) Wayland. She was a graduate of Chandler High School. She served the City of Perry as the secretary/treasurer. She was a member of the Garden Club of Perry, a former secretary for the Oklahoma State Garden Clubs and also a past president of North Central District Garden Clubs. She owned and operated Fredonna's Flowers and Gifts from 1971 through 1976. She married Jesse "Katz" Eisenhauer Oct. 18, 1935, in Chandler. He died in 1969. After several years of being a widow, she married John Herbert Dowell Feb. 14, 1985. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, one brother, Robert; one sister, Dorotha; and one infant son. She is survived by one sister, Virginia Richardson of Colorado; one brother, W. C. (Dub) Wayland of Eufaula; three nieces, Rita Kay Richardson of Colorado, Suzetta June Morris of Missouri and Dorotha Ann Rossom of Texas; and several nephews. Ted Porter Ted Ray Porter, 90, Pawnee, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at his home. Services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Eshelman Memorial Chapel in Pawnee. Porter was born June 15, 1912, in East Long Branch to James Lonzo Porter and Rosilie (Collins) Porter. He married Freda May Focht Oct. 15, 1932, in Perry. She preceded him in death March 30, 1986. Porter moved to Sumner in 1932 and then to Pawnee in 1942 and remained there the rest of his life. He was a farmer and drove bus one for Pawnee Public Schools. He was a member of the Steam Engine Association, the Rodeo Association, the Cockfighting Association and the Pony Pulling Association. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two daughters, Deloris Ramey and Bobbie Williams; and four grandchildren. Lodge 1118 will present military honors. Nettles was born April 8, 1915, in Gatewood, Mo., to John P. and Martha Bell (Underwood) Nettles. He was a farmer and also worked for the Tulsa Country Club where he retired. Nettles was a veteran of the United States Army and served during WW II. He received the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and the Silver Star. Nettles was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gracie; three brothers and two sisters. Claude was born Oct. 30, 1905, in Ripley, to A.T. and Nannie (Barrett) Bennett. She received her early education in Ripley and was a graduate of the Ripley High School. She attend Oklahoma A & M and received a bachelor's degree in science and received a master's degree in education. She taught school for 37 years in the Cushing area. She married Ellis Douglas Claude April 11, 1925, in Joplin, Mo. They made their home in Cushing and have since resided. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Cushing for over 75 years and also was a member of the OEA and NEA and the Delta Kappa Gamma in Stillwater and the Kappa Kappa Iota in Cushing. Survivors include one sister, Ruby Young of Cushing; one nephew, Gene Eldon Bennett and his wife Wilda of Bakersfield, Calif.; five great nieces and nephews, Debbie Logan, Terri McCasland, Cindy Mord, Karen Hallmark and Earl Bennett; three great great nieces and nephews, Brian Mord, Sara Logan and Grayson Bennett Logan. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in the First Baptist Church of Cushing. Dr. Lonny Lee, pastor, will preside. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery in Cushing. The family will be at the funeral home 3-6 p.m. Wednesday and 10-11:30 a.m Thursday for visitation. Palmer Funeral Home is directing the arrangements. She was born Aug. 16, 1907, in a house built on the Missouri-Arkansas border to Mortica Montezuma McCall and Talitha Cumi Grammer McCall. She came to the Cushing area when she was a teenager where she met and married W. Z. "Bill" Cook. The couple left Cushing after he joined The Refinery Engineering Company to build petroleum refineries in Winnewood, Oklahoma City, Big Spring and Levelland, Texas, Centralia, Illinois and Huntington, W. Va. During these times, Jessie was a homemaker taking excellent care of her husband and children, "Bill" Jr. and Cumi Faye. She also volunteered with the American Red Cross. In 1945, they moved back to Cushing, where he worked for Deep Rock Refinery and later his own business, Cook's Welding Company. They also raised beef cattle on their land north of town. She was not only a homemaker but receptionist, bookkeeper and all around helper for the family businesses. She was also active in clubs such as the Rose Unit of the Garden Club, Better Homes Club, Stitch-in-Time, Eastern Star, Quilting Club, Cushing Historical Society and was a charter member of the Pioneer Club. In each organization, she served in various positions of leadership. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cushing for 47 years and was very active in the church. She instilled into her children the desire for knowledge. Her son became a medical doctor and her daughter a teacher with a master's degree. She worked in the office of B & B Freight Line and the store part of Erwin's Printing. She was the manager of Gibble Tire Store. She always tried to improve herself. She took night courses at Cushing High School in bookkeeping and accounting and taught herself how to invest money from articles in the newspaper. After she was a grandmother, she took the License Practical Nursing course and received her LPN certification. After retiring, she enjoyed investing her money and traveling. She traveled over much of the United States, in Canada and Mexico and most of the countries of Europe. She loved gardening and learned how to graft pecan trees. She sold pecans from those trees and honey from her own bee hives She sewed all her life for herself and her family. She raised beautiful flowers and shared them with others, often being called on to make beautiful flower arrangements. She loved being with friends, playing Bridge and Bunco regularly. She was a regular attendee of Cushing City Council meetings. She was an election worker and helped with community Thanksgiving dinners. For many years, she wrote the weekly column, "Seniors on the Go", for the Cushing Daily Citizen promoting Cushing and seniors. She was active at the Cushing Senior Citizen's Center, was a member of the Center's Steering Council and as a volunteer cook responsible for Saturday pot luck lunches. She was well known for her wonderful beans and cornbread. She loved to dance and was a regular at the Center's music and dance nights. She was predeceased by her husband, W. Z. Cook; her parents, six sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her son, Dr. W. Z. Services are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home. Killian was born Ruth Caroline Brewer May 24, 1912, in Oklahoma City to Frank Wilson and Maud Smith Brewer. The family soon relocated to a ranch near Indiahoma where the Brewers raised their four daughters. She graduated from Indiahoma Schools and then attended Cameron College and Central State Teachers' College. After teaching school one year, she attended Oklahoma A&M College, where she met Byrle Garner Killian. They were married April 25, 1937. After living in Guthrie, where her husband taught vocational agriculture, the couple returned to Stillwater where he advanced his career with the State Vocational Education Department. Stillwater became their lifelong home where they raised their children. Killian enjoyed telling how her father rode his horse from Indiana to Oklahoma City to practice veterinary medicine. It was there he met and married Maud Smith, who had arrived by train to work at St. Anthony Hospital after her nursing training at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Ill.. Killian's love for history was the basis for her interest in genealogy. She spent many happy hours proving her lineage for numerous patriotic organizations, including National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons, Daughters of the American Colonists, National Society of Dames XVII Century and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also a member of the First United Methodist Church, a charter member of Chapter EP of the PEO Sisterhood, Zeta Tau Alpha Alumnae, RAR and the Bridge Club. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sisters, Mary Lee Friels and Margaret Martin. A memorial service will be held in Stillwater on Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran Church. She was born on July 27, 1948, to William A. and Bessie E. Garretson of Smith Center, Ark. She attended Jacksonburg and Reamsville county schools and Smith Center High School. In 1970 she received her bachelor's degree in music education from Kearney State College in Nebraska. On Aug. 9, 1970, she married James G. Leising in Franklin, Neb. She taught music education there for two years. The couple lived in Ames, Iowa from 1972 until 1976. They moved to Davis, Calif. in 1976 where they remained for nearly 20 years. They moved to Stillwater in 1995. When her children were small she gave piano lessons in her home. Eventually she took a part-time job in the main library at the University of California, Davis. This led to a career in library work. When the family moved to Stillwater she was employed at the Edmond Low Library and most recently worked as a library specialist for the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education. When she was a child she was baptized and confirmed at the Reamsville Methodist Church near her family's farm. After she was married she joined the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and was a dedicated servant to her faith. Her heartfelt involvement through the years included teaching and administering Sunday School, holding various offices in the church and in the Lutheran Women's Missionary League. She also conducted the choir. She was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church. She was known for her clear soprano voice and shared her talent whenever asked. In addition to her musical gifts she volunteered countless hours to school, community and 4-H programs. She was predeceased by her parents and one sister Shirley May Willis. Mary Nichols Mary Frances Nichols, 84, died Wednesday, October 9, 2002, in Stillwater. Services, with George Boston presiding were held Friday at the First Baptist Church in Hominy. Interment followed at A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery. Powell Funeral Home directed the arrangements. She was born in Locust Grove on Nov. 5, 1917, to Richard and Pearl Blackwell Henton. She was educated at Mound Valley High School and was a long-time resident of Hominy. On Feb. 17, 1937, she married Virgil Scott "Mutt" Nichols in Hominy. He died in 1988. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hominy and enjoyed being active in the church. She was a member of the Women's Missionary Union. As part of her ministry she delivered cassette tapes to people and was secretary/treasurer of her Sunday School classes and department. She was a great woman of her time and in 1936 was a member of the state basketball championship team. She also took care of the family and home while her husband was fighting for his country during World War II. She enjoyed going to the Senior Citizen Center, working outside, mowing her yard and crocheting. She also enjoyed bowling especially when she took her grandchildren. She was an OSU Cowboys fan and a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. She really like to go out to eat and one of her favorite things was to go to Eskimo Joe's and eat their onion rings. She devoted her life to her husband and children. She loved her family dearly. In addition to her husband and parents she was predeceased by two brothers, Joe and Walter Henton and two sisters, Martha Lunsford and Elma Dean Lowery. While attending OSU, she was recognized for her academic achievement on both the dean's and president's honor rolls. She married Travis Owen on Dec. 30, 1996. The couple had two daughters, Cailie and Talie Owen. Owen began a career in health care and worked for Stillwater Health Clinic. She was later instrumental in the opening of the Cleveland and Pawnee health clinics, serving as director of Cleveland Health Clinic. She was a member of Sunnybrook Christian Church. Following the death of her mother (shortly after her birth) she was cared for by Sam and Amanda Wade Batts, her maternal grandparents. At the age 12 her maternal aunt, Sociable Blackwell (Hun) and uncle, Benjamin Blackwell (Uncle Pero), provided her a loving home in Sapulpa. With their support, she was able to complete her secondary education at Bishop College's Secondary Department High School in Marshall, Texas. She earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from Langston University and a master's of education degree from Alabama State University, Montgomery, Ala. While at Langston University she met and married the late Joe S. Johnson May 4, 1929. They were blessed with a 39 year union and one son. As a couple, the Johnson's were dedicated educators who shared the joys and challenges of life together until his death Aug. 1, 1968. Her career as a primary teacher spanned over 40 years. She also held life memberships in the Oklahoma Education Association and the Payne County Retired Education Association. A committed lifetime child of God and church member, she grew up in Mount Olive Baptist Church in Sapulpa. In 1939, she moved to Cushing. She remained a devoted member of Cushing's Mount Olive Baptist Church until she relocated to Silver Spring, Md., to be near her son and his family. The family will greet friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Strode Funeral Home. He was the son of William Alden and Matilda Stucki Gray. He was born Aug. 12, 1916, in Santa Clara, Utah. He married Evlyn Snow of St. George, Utah, Dec. 21, 1938. He is a retired Oklahoma State University agronomy professor. He earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Utah in 1938. In 1941, he served in the Army as a sergeant in biological and chemical warfare. In 1951, he received a Ph.D. in soil science from Ohio State University. He joined the faculty at OSU in 1951. He taught soil morphology and related courses in soil science to more that 2,000 graduate and undergraduates. He served as a major advisor for 61 master's and Ph.D. candidates and coached many soil judging teams. He helped develop the first land judging score card used in state and national contests. He authored 80 publications in agronomy. He traveled all over the world. He received the Outstanding Teacher Award in Agriculture in 1979, the Educators Award of the Oklahoma Council of SCS in 1969, and the Dr. Kamm Recognition Award for Outstanding Commitment to International Students in 1980. He was most honored by his selection to the American Society of Agronomy Fellow. It is the highest honor bestowed by the Society. After retirement, he and his wife worked in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints Temple in Dallas, Texas, and the genealogical library. His hobbies were bowling, golf - including a hole-in-one after 75 years, square dancing, gardening and his grandchildren's games, dance recitals and activities. He was preceded in death by his wife and great-granddaughter, Daily Leauanae. He loved children, had many friends and had a great zest for living life to its fullest. He always had and will be remembered for his smile. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the 45th Infantry Division, 179th Infantry Regiment, company I. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Pasadena, California. He was a 1952 graduate of Perry High School and attended Oklahoma State University and Okmulgee Tech. He worked for Waukesha Engines in New Mexico and Wyoming. He returned home to Perry in 1966 and began farming and ranching. In 1996, he went to work for Charles Machine Works. He retired in 1999 and moved to California. He was predeceased by his father; one brother, Donald Lee; and an infant daughter. A reception will follow at the High Prairie School. Burnett was born Oct. 31, 1913, in Perkins to Jonathan and Emma (Pryor) Burnett. He received his early education at the High Prairie School in Perkins. He married Georgia Novella Brewer on Dec. 30, 1947, in Globe, Ariz. They lived in Arizona before returning to Perkins to live in 1969. Burnett owned Burnett Appliance Store in Arizona. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a Motor Machinist's Mate Second Class and received a commendation for the invasion of Sicily, in which he operated a landing craft. His joy in life was cars, fishing and tinkering. Survivors include two daughters, Bobbie Burnett of Perkins and Phyllis Berray and her husband John of Fort Worth, Texas; one brother, Raymond Burnett of Stillwater; three grandchildren, David, Robert and Lori; two great- grandchildren, Ryan and Caitlin; and numerous other relatives and friends. She was born Sept. 5, 1904, near Loretto in Marian County, Ky. She was the daughter of E. H. and Ida L. (Brengle) Adams. At age four, she and her parents relocated to a farm northeast of Lucien. In 1920, she moved to Perry. She was a 1924 graduate of Perry High School and obtained a teaching certificate but decided to enter the business field. She worked four years at the First National Bank in Perry, then four years in the Noble County Clerk's office before becoming employed at the County Superintendent's office, a position she held for 12 years. On Nov. 18, 1944, she and Fred H. Kruse were married at Oklahoma City. They were married 26 years before he died Aug. 14, 1970. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Perry. On Sept. 20, 1993, she was presented a certificate of appreciation for 75 years of continuous membership and dedicated service to the Lord and the First Baptist Church. A past matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Perry, she also was past worthy high priestess in the W Shrine number 10 and a member of the Social Order of the Beauceant Assembly number five at Enid. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Brengle Adams, Spurgeon Adams, Roy Adams, Bill Adams, Dr. Paul G. Adams and Joe H. Following her high school graduation, Lawrence attended Dayton Art Institute as a graphic designer, where she had worked for several different stores and companies in the ad layouts and artwork. She was united in marriage to Joe Ray Lawrence, who preceded her in death. The couple owned and operated the Lawrence Supply and Equipment Company for several years. She also enjoyed working with quarter horses. She was later married to Mike Wayne Lewis; he also preceded her in death. Lawrence was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed horses, reading, drawing, dancing, playing golf and working in her garden. She is survived by her brother, Harold Ahlers, Crescent City, Calif.; niece, Carolyn Campbell, Oakhurst, Calif., and other relatives and friends, including Brenda Lewis, who provided special care and attention for her for the past several years. She was born in Perkins June 27, 1920, to Edward Small and Phoebe Kent Small. She married William Smith in Wetumka. He died in January 1984. She was the oldest full-blood female of the Iowa Tribe and belonged to the Wolf and Eagle Clans. Her Indian name meant "watching over you." She met and married William Smith, a Creek Indian from Wetumka, in 1945. They were married for 35 years. He became a preacher and she worked along with him for over 10 years in the Methodist ministry. She also trained and became a certified lay speaker. They worked with the Cherokee Tribe in Jay and with the Creek and Seminole Tribes in Wetumka. She later moved back to Shawnee where she was active in the church and was employed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. She also became a certified carpenter. She smiled when she told of being a carpenter "because I was over the boys." She served as the NICOA worker for the Title VI Program until she began having health problems. She was a shining example to our young people and loved her cultural traditions. She represented love, friendship, grace and family. She had many family members who loved and cared for her. She was a member of Nagawee United Methodist Church in Shawnee. She was a member of NICOA, the National Indian Council of Aging. She was predeceased by her husband, parents, two sisters and three brothers. She is survived by six grandchildren, Phoebe, April, and Samarra Carson of Oklahoma City, Leah and Gerrie Shores of Shawnee and Madeline Shores of McLoud; one sister, Irene Shores of Shawnee and several nieces and nephews. Jones there. They made their home in Stillwater for 49 years, before moving to Enid in 1996 and then to Carrier in 2000. She was an avid bowler and a member of the Moose Lodge for many years. She organized her class reunions in Stillwater. She was a loving wife, mom and grandmother. She was "Grandma" to everyone she met and her greatest joy was cooking for others. Jones was preceded in death by her husband Jan. 1, 2001; her parents, one brother and three sisters. She is survived by her daughter and husband, Cheryl and Cody Smith of Enid. He married Jeanie Nelson Oct. 26, 1946, in Ark City, Kan. She died Jan. 8, 1991. He then married Lucille (Stramp) Voss June 25, 1999, in Stillwater. He attended and graduated from Ponca City schools. During his junior year, he enlisted in the Navy and served for six years in the Pacific Theater. After his honorable discharge, he returned to Ponca City, where he met his first wife, Jeanie. They lived east of Ponca City, where he worked for Phillips Petroleum Corporation as a pulling unit operator. He retired in 1982. He and Jeanie ran the Donut Shop on Third Street in Ponca City and the Seventh Street Donut Shop until her death in 1991. His love for dancing brought him to meet his second wife, Lucille. The couple married in 1999 and moved to Stillwater. They enjoyed playing bridge and he loved to fish. Hewas loved by all and will be remembered for his strong sense of family. Fredricks was a member of the VFW in Ponca City, American Legion in Ponca City and the National Rifle Association. He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife and one brother. He served in the National Guard for eight years. He married Linda Bates in Glencoe on Dec. 10, 1976. For many years, Metcalf owned his own business, Import Automotive. "Woody" Goeringer, 69, died Monday, Oct. 28, 2002, at his home in Stillwater. Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Johns Catholic Church under the direction of Colonial Chapel Funeral Home. There will be a private burial service at a later date. He was born Sept. 17, 1933, to James Ellwood and Helen "Mitzi" Goeringer in Wilksborough, Penn. He moved to Oklahoma City with his family, where he graduated from Central Catholic High, now McGuiness High School. He won the Golden Glove Championship while in high school. He served in the Army from 1949 to 1950 in the 45th division of the National Guard at age 16. He served again, from 1955 to 1958, after three years of college at Oklahoma A&M. While in the Army, he had an extensive boxing career including winning "Northeast Overseas Command Championship." He married L. Irene "Rene" Goeringer in 1958 in Ozark, Ala. They returned to Stillwater so he could complete his degree in business at Oklahoma State, graduating in 1959. After obtaining his degree, he worked for Mass. Mutual Life Ins. Co. and later Connecticut Mutual Life Ins. Co. as a special agent and then as a general agent. He had a general agency with Indianapolis Life Ins. Co. He obtained his CLU and ChFC and in 1970, he opened Goeringer Insurance Agency which continued until his death. In 1986, after an interest in real estate, he obtained his real estate license and later his brokers license. In 1987, he started The Global Real Estate School where he has been teaching real estate licensing courses, Advanced Sales courses and brokers courses ever since. In 1993, he joined the Century 21 Global Realtor Agency and "family" as a real estate broker. He has been a member of the C21 Masters Club since 1993 and a Multi-Million Dollar Producer every year since. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge 1859 where he served as secretary for 12 years and past exalted ruler. He was a charter member, fourth degree knight and past grand-knight of the Knights of Columbus 5266. His involvement in the local community of Stillwater allowed him to serve as president of Stillwater Estate Planning Council, Stillwater Country Club Homeowners, Stillwater Life Underwriters Association and Stillwater Board of Realtors. He served on the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission and United Way Board of Directors. He was finance committee chairman at St. John University Parish and served on dozens of other charitable and civic boards. He was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Alumni Association and served as chapter counselor for 16 years. He gave the initial funding for the Christi Goeringer Scholarship Fund that allows young female high school graduates the chance at a scholarship they might not otherwise have a chance to obtain. He was an avid golfer. He ate, breathed and dreamed golf. On Wednesdays, when he told the folks at Century 21 Global that he was going to go appraise some land, those that knew him well, knew he was playing golf with his long time golfing buddies. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Christi Goeringer Johnston. After her education, she was employed in the food preparation unit at University Hospital in Oklahoma City, later working at Northwest Classen High School. On April 18, 1931, she married Raymond E. Stults in Oklahoma City. For the majority of her life, she was devoted to providing a loving and nurturing environment for her family. In 1987, she moved to Amarillo, Texas, to be near her daughter. Following her daughter's death, she returned to Oklahoma to surround herself with family. Stults greatly enjoyed bowling and won many trophies for her accomplishments. She was also active at the Senior Citizens Center in Oklahoma City and enjoyed crocheting and knitting. Stults was a member of Trinity Baptist Church of Amarillo. When she was 85, she bowled in four leagues. She also oil painted and won blue ribbons in this year's fair. She loved to play bridge and will be remembered for her cooking and hospitality. Her greatest love was being with her family. She belonged to Liberty Heights Christian Church of Lawton and Oklahoma and Alliance Bible Church of Stillwater. He received his early education in the Yale and Quay area. He married Velda Boblit Dec. 13, 1934, in Oilton. They farmed northeast of Yale for many years prior to moving to Oklahoma City. She preceded him in death in September of 1967. On April 26, 1968, he married Bertha I. Mosley in Oklahoma City. They lived in there until moving to Yale in 1995. Tull had worked for Capital Steele and Iron in Oklahoma City, Armour Company in Oklahoma City, P.W. Powers Foundation Drilling in Oklahoma City and also owned his own bus and worked for the Putnam City School System. Tull was an avid gardener. Services, with Rev. Susan Ross presiding, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Pawnee. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Poteet Funeral Home is directing the arrangements. She was born in Collinsville Feb. 16, 1919, to John Jacob and Lillie Estella (Vanderford) Reser. She married Glenwood I. Haug Dec. 22, 1945, in Guthrie. He died April 26, 1981. In 1941, she graduated from Central State College in Edmond with a degree in education. After graduation, she taught business classes in Skiatook and Oologah High Schools. She and her husband took over his father's Texaco Service Station. They later rebuilt the station and built several tourist courts which they continued to operate until he died. She later worked at the Pawnee Nutrition Site. She taught Bible classes at the United Methodist Church for more than 30 years. She was the Camp Fire Girls and the Blue Birds leader for many years. She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Yakstis and her husband David of Wagoner; nieces and nephews, Ruth Leak and her husband and family of Visalia, Calif., Tom Haug and his wife Nikki of Maryland, Doris Buster and her sons of Tahlequah, Bobby Buster and his family of Tahlequah, David Buster and family of Broken Arrow, Mary Ruth Pranger and her family of Collinsville, A.D. Services were held Oct. 29 in Salem, Ore. We never saw your little face or held your little hands but we loved you dearly and may you rest in peace in God's loving hands. You will be forever loved by your Oklahoma family. She is predeceased by her grandfather, Alvin Slavens and great-grandfather, Woody Slavens. Memorial services, with Richard Poe presiding, will be Friday at 7 p.m. at the Stillwater Church of Christ. She was born in Konawa Nov. 22, 1926, to C.O. and Maudie Jane Smith. She grew up in Konawa/Ada with her parents, four sisters and four brothers. She spent most of her adult life in Oklahoma City. Five years ago she moved to Stillwater to be near her son. She was a career woman and worked for AT&T for 23 years before retiring in 1988. However, she was a wife and mother first. Her children provided her with many joyous hours entertaining her grandchildren. She was very generous with her love for these children and was successful in spoiling most of them. Her first love was her Lord. She was a faithful Christian. With everything she did, she served the Lord by serving people. She was a shining example for her family and anyone else who was around her. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by four brothers and three sisters. Survivors include three sons, Rick Simpson of Durango, Colo., Larry Simpson of Stillwater and Tim Simpson of Gurnee, Ill.; one sister, Mildred Kiser of Chickasha; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Stillwater Church of Christ Mission Fund. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ervin Williams Jr. Dr. Ervin Williams Jr., 76, died Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2002, in Oklahoma City. Services, with Rev. Andrew Hall presiding, will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Highland Park United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Fairlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 until 6 p.m. at Strode Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. at the church. He was born in Longford, Kan., March 22, 1926, to Ervin Williams Sr. and Cecil E (Hughes) Williams. On June 1, 1963, he married Johna Breckenridge in Las Cruces, N.M. After graduating from Clay County Community High School in Clay Center, Kan., he went to Kansas State University where in 1951 he received his B.S. in agriculture. In 1960 he received his M.S. in botany and his PhD in botany and plant pathology from Oklahoma State University in 1973. From 1955 until 1960 he worked as an agricultural research scientist in Manhattan, Kan. He then was an assistant professor, Department of Agriculture Services at New Mexico State University until 1969. He then was professor and extension plant pathologist at Oklahoma State University. He retired from OSU after 23 years of service. The focus of his research was diseases of wheat, small grains and cotton. He was a member of Highland Park United Methodist where he taught Sunday school for more than 15 years. He was past chairman of the trustees and an administrative council member. During the Korean Conflict he served in the Army as a member of the 710th Military Police Company and received the Army Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a member Society of Sigma Xi, past president of Payne County Retired Teachers, past president of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Stillwater Woodworkers Club, Kansas State University Golden K Club (50 year graduate), OSU Emeriti Association, OSU Alumni Association and Hanner- Sharp American Legion Post 129. His hobbies were wood turning, gardening and traveling. He was predeceased by his parents. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Gerald Arnold Williams of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Marilyn Dee Crynes and her husband Stephen of Normal, Ill. and Carolyn Lee Magee and her husband David of Plano, Texas; six grandchildren Aleesha Nicole Williams, Aubrey Shea Crynes, Elliot James Crynes, Matthew Russell Magee, Andrew David Magee and Jennifer Joy Magee. Pallbearers will be Larry Littlefield, Kenneth E.
