Family members of the child, Dezire Ann Marie Parks, said her father and other relatives tried to save her when the fire started, but to no avail. The family was living in the Ballerina Edgewater Park in the Peninsula area of the lake in Pawnee County. "She was a happy baby," said Dezire's mother, Amber Nicole Noble. "She didn't cry unless she wanted a bottle." Noble and the girl's father, Michael Parks, were awakened by Noble's son Matthew, 3, who noticed smoke throughout the home, Noble said. Dezire was sleeping in another room. "I ran out the door to get help, and Michael tried to get the baby," Noble said. "It was too bad. He made it to her room but couldn't make any farther." The family had lived at the park only a few months, she said. Noble added that she believed electrical problems likely started the fire because the family had to change faulty sockets recently. "We had just bought everything new," she said. "We were starting over." Pawnee County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Melton said the fire investigation was continuing, so no cause had been determined as of Wednesday evening. The Sheriff's Office, state Medical Examiner's Office and state Fire Marshal's Office were cooperating in the investigation, he said. "The outer shell is still standing, but whole inside is gutted," Melton said. Sandra Yeary, a grandmother of Matthew's, said the family had just put in the crib for Dezire in the past week. Matthew has a brother, James, 2, who was staying overnight with Yeary. Yeary remembered Dezire as a happy baby who loved to eat and smiled all the time. "She was a sweetheart," she said. Michael Parks was treated and released from the Cleveland hospital, family members said. Parks, Noble and the surviving children are staying with other relatives. "None of them even has clothes," Yeary said. She praised the actions of Matthew, who she said alerted the other family members by telling them "C'mon, c'mon" to get out of the home. Yeary's daughter Dawn Whitaker, 18, had been living with the family but was also staying elsewhere Tuesday night. "He woke them up," Yeary said of Matthew's actions. "They could all have died." Brian Jensen, a spokesman for the Tulsa-area chapter of the American Red Cross, said a team had been sent to Pawnee County to help the family. Dezire was the second young child to die in a residential fire in northeastern Oklahoma this week. Graciella Mathews-Tiger, 4, was killed Monday when a blaze destroyed her family's Okmulgee home. State Fire Marshal Robert Doke said that as many as 10 Oklahoma children have died in home fires in the past few months. He encouraged residents to make sure their homes have functioning smoke alarms. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Payne County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/payne/payne.html
