Van Eaton of Stillwater died Sunday, May 18, 2003 at The Renaissance assisted living facility in Stillwater. She was born in Baxter Springs, Kan., to David and Madie Ruth McConkey Porter. Her mother died when she was five and she was reared by her grandparents. She graduated from high school at Quapaw and attended the Oklahoma School of Mines in Miami and later received her B.S. degree and teacher certification in physical education from Northeastern Teachers' College in Tahlequah. As a young woman, she taught physical education and English literature at Lincolnville, Stringtown and on the Osage Indian Reservation. She married Frank Van Eaton on Aug. 10, 1932. They lived in Atoka, Louisiana, Colorado and Wyoming before moving to Stillwater in 1986. Van Eaton was very creative and enjoyed writing, literature, poetry, reading, travel and craft activities. She was a gifted seamstress and created beautiful gowns and many wonderful costumes for stage productions. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Chapter DU PEO. She was preceded in death by her husband; her daughter, Sunny Van Eaton; and six brothers and sisters. She is survived by one sister, Catherine Stoner of Joplin, Mo.; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. A memorial celebration is planned for Van Eaton and her daughter, Sunny, at a later date.
