"Wheat" Wheatly, 84, Stillwater, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Strode Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Bowden and the Rev. Chick Pettigrew officiating. Mr. Wheatly died Wednesday, July 9, 2003. Burial will be at Fairlawn Cemetery, Stillwater. He was born Nov. 14, 1918, in Nelagony to F.W. Wheatly and Iris Duff Wheatly. He married Zackie Shadid Wheatly on Nov. 27, 1940, in Sayre. She died in October 2002. He served 27 years in the Army and attained the rank of lieutenant colonel. He served during World War II in the China-Burma-India Theatre with Merrill’s famous Marauders. He served in Korea at the outbreak of hostilities in July 1950. He retired in 1964 and was a golf professional at the Fort Sill Golf Club until 1971. He was the first recruiter and bus driver for the Comanche County Nutrition Center. He was a member of Liberty Heights Christian Church, Lawton, and Alliance Bible Church, Stillwater. Survivors include a son, Gary Wheatly, Lawton; a daughter and son-in- law, Rita and James Carley, Stillwater; four grandchildren and their spouses: Jason Carley and his fiancée, Erin Lasarsky, Stillwater; Keri and George Shields, Oklahoma City; Andrea and Jodie Wilson and Kristin and Brock Peoples, Tulsa; a great-grandchild, Grant, Oklahoma City; and two sisters: Audra Weber, San Jose, Calif.; and Hazel Stephenson, Tulsa.
