"Hartshorne Boys Will Have to Pay the Penalty for Their Folly. "Bert Hall, Stewart Patterson, Tom Jackson, and Jim Dingle were arrested last Friday on a charge of burglary. Hall, while under guard, made a break for liberty and succeeded in getting away after being wounded in the leg, and is still at large. "Craig Hall, a brother to the one who escaped, was arrested the following day on the same charge. The four boys were taken to South McAlester by Deputy Hunt where they had an examining trial Monday. Patterson and Hall were remanded to jail, Jackson was released on bond, and Dingle was discharged. "The depot had been broken into a number of times recently, Saturday night, January 28, being the date of the last raid and Baker-Reidt's store has twice been entered by burglars within the past few weeks, beside an attempt was made to gain an entrance to W. H. Killing's confectionary two weeks ago and perhaps other places have been visited in like manner, which set the officers to wondering who these midnight marauders could be, and they went to work for a clue, with the result that the boys were caught red handed. "A little shack in the south part of town was being maintained as a kind of depository for stolen goods as well as a rendezvous for the gang who were doing their best to carry a full and complete line of everything, including a good supply of whisky, shipped in here presumably to some prohibitionist, by mistake, and the boys beat him to it. "Deputy U.S. Marshal Hunt and City Marshal Ledbetter very unceremoniously swooped down upon them and the arrests followed. "About a wagon load of general merchandise was identified as the property of Baker-Riedt, which was hauled back to the store." -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Pittsburg County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/pittsburg/pittsburg.htm
