S. Deputy Marshal John Hunt tells of a lively chase he had at the depot in Haileyville, Wednesday morning. "He was returning from Sulphur, I.T., where he had been to get Charles Lewis, who was wanted for theft of a horse at Craig. Turning his man over to the authorities at South McAlester, Deputy Hunt boarded the early morning train for Hartshorne. "On reaching Haileyville, he concluded to disembark and see if there was anything doing. As he approached the express office, a worth son of Ham emerged therefrom lugging a box. Hunt addressed the Negro, calling him by name Frank Jackson, who runs a restaurant at Dow asking him if he wasn't out rather early. Frank agreed that he was but that he had important business. "Relieving the Negro of a .45 six shooter, Hunt stepped into the express office to get something with which to open the box. Frank concluded that his business lay rolling, and off he went like a cannon ball, and a shot from Hunt's gun only accelerated the movement of the frightened Negro's legs. "The box contained 12 quarts of whisky, which was disposed of in the usual way. Hunt went over to Dow later in the day and got Jackson and took him to South Town." -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Pittsburg County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/pittsburg/pittsburg.htm
