"Hotel Hartshorne Guests Touched for $107.00. "Suspect Arrested. "Thursday night last a thief entered the sleeping apartments of three of the guests at Hotel Hartshorne and relieved them of a total of $107. The sufferers were A. A. Chappel, $27, W. S. Thomas, $35, and T. A. Trusty, $45. Mr. Trusty had a $150 watch and some silver in one pocket that was unmolested. "A man named Bruce Smith, salesman for a butcher supply house was followed to Wilburton and arrested on suspicion but was liberated. Later City Marshal Berry arrested Bill Gentry, a young colored fellow, commonly called 'preacher' who was taken in charge by Deputy U.S. Marshal John Hunt and lodged in jail at South McAlester. "There appears to be a pretty strong case of circumstantial evidence against Gentry. He had previously been employed at the hotel and just after the robbery was known to have had an unusual amount of money, having bought two suits of clothes, a pair of patent leather shoes, shirts, underwear, ties, etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Pittsburg County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/pittsburg/pittsburg.htm
