All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Bishop, Betty Irene Betty Irene Bishop was born May 26, 1917 at Hartshorne, OK. Following the death of her mother, Betty at age 13 came to the Okla. Baptist Orphans Home in Okla. City. She attended Trinity Baptist Church beginning in 1937 and made her profession of faith and joined Trinity in 1940. Poor health led to Betty's leaving the Home prior to high school graduation. In 1942 she returned to become an employee of the Children's Home. She worked as an assistant housemother, then a cook, in activities, and then in the infirmary on campus. Then she worked as a full-time housemother for 35 yrs. 'Mama Betty,' as she was affectionally known, shared her life unselfishly in caring for more than 700 boys and girls. In 1979 at the Univ. of Texas Annual Personnel of Homes for Children Workshop, Betty Bishop was presented an award for 37 yrs. of outstanding service to Okla. Baptist Children's Homes. Two years later in 1981 the wife of the governor of Oklahoma presented Betty Bishop an award given by the Okla. Association for Children's Institutions and Agencies for 'Outstanding Service as a Child Care Worker.' In 1982 Betty retired and moved to the Baptist Retirement Center where she was employed in a part-time capacity for 13 yrs. Over a span of many years Betty Bishop received cards, letters, phone calls, and visits from alumni from all over the U.S. Betty passed away on August 27, 2005. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 30, 2005 at Guardian West Funeral Home with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
