Hallock, who practiced dentistry in Santa Rosa for 29 years until retiring in 1982, died Monday at his Santa Rosa home following an extended illness. He was 74. His dentistry career spanned 40 years, including military service and private practice first in Sanger near Fresno. Born in McAlester, Okla., Hallock lived in Cuba until age 7, when his parents moved back to McAlester. He graduated from the Oklahoma School of Mines. He then earned his degree in dentistry from Baylor Dental School in Dallas, Texas. His wife, Mary Hallock of Santa Rosa, said he served as a dental officer in the Navy until 1947. He also ran the Officer's Club, the Balalika Club, on Kowloon in Hong Kong Harbor, said to be the best club in the Pacific at the time. He moved his family and practice to Santa Rosa from Sanger in 1953. Hallock also was an avid boat builder and enjoyed studying American Indian art. His wife said he was in the process of duplicating bows of Northern California tribes and other tribes. He had finished bows of five tribes, including a Cherokee boy, a Plains Indian buffalo bow and a Tolowa, Hupa and Achumawi bow. He also made arrows for the bows, including flint-knapping. As an avid sailor, Hallock designed and built a kayak featured in a story in "Sea Kayaker" magazine. He built a Pete Culler Sailing Canoe and restored early and later version canoes. He also owned a hotel in Oaxaca, Mexico, for a number of years. Hallock was a member of the Tomales Sailing Club, the Traditional Small Craft Association, the Northern California Dental Association and the American Dental Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Leslie Sanders of Vancouver, Wash.; son, Jeffrey Hallock of Fresno; brother, Donald Hallock of Dallas; sister, Patricia Hale of Philadelphia, Pa.; and three grandchildren. No services were held at his request.
