All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Park--Bakersfield CA Harrington, Bobby Gene Bobby Gene Harrington April 7, 1934 - August 5, 2007 Bobby Gene Harrington was born on April 7, 1934 in McAlester, Oklahoma to Robert J. Harrington (deceased) and Jimmie I. (Stewart) Harrington (deceased). He attended Fairfax Elementary School, Mt. View Middle School, and Washington Jr. High School. He was in the first graduating class of Arvin High School in 1952. He played Basketball for Arvin and was still remembered by many for his basketball skills. Upon graduating high school, Bob joined the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. It was during one of his leaves onshore that he met his wife, Shirley Marie Smith at Arvin Southern Baptist Church. They continued to date throughout his time in the Navy. Bob and Shirley were married August 25, 1956 after his tour was over and he was discharged from the Navy. He then attended Bakersfield Jr. College and played Basketball for B.C. for 2 years. During that time, Bob worked for C.C. Douglas Used Cars. He received his A.A. in 1958 and then started working for the Probation Dept. as a counselor at Juvenile Hall. He was then promoted to a Deputy Probation Officer and worked for Juvenile Probation for 17 years before transferring to Adult Probation where he worked for another 17 years. He retired in 1993 after 34 years with the Probation Dept. He was also President of the Kern County Employees Union and served on the Retirement Board as well as of the Grand Jury. Bob's church and his family were always an important part of his life. He attended Arvin Southern Baptist Church for several years. Harmony Southern Baptist Church in Lamont was also an important part of his life and ministry; and that is where he began serving on the Southern Baptist Association. When his family moved to Bakersfield they attended First Southern Baptist Church for several years before joining Rosedale Bible Church. When his son became a pastor and started a new church, Bob and Shirley became charter members of River Valley Community Church in 1989. One of Bob's great loves was sports and he enjoyed watching his children as well as his grandchildren play. He also loved watching baseball (Dodgers), basketball (Phoenix Suns), and all football. Bob loved all music, especially Gospel, Country Western, and 50's music which included Laurence Welk. Bob is preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his beloved sister, Lorene Everett, who resides in Phoenix, Arizona. Lorene's husband, Troy Everett (deceased) was like a father to Bob and he loved him dearly. Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley, and their children. Their son, Jeff Harrington and his wife, Kelly, as well as their two sons, Jake and Zach, and his girlfriend, Lacy. Their daughter, Rhonda McKinsey and her husband, Greg, as well as their daughter, Mikayla, and Greg's daughter, Hanna. He is also survived by many nieces, and nephews, and friends. He will missed by all and considered most friends family. A memorial service has been scheduled for Saturday, August 18, 2007, at 10:00 a.m., at Daybreak Baptist Church, 5446 Taft Hwy., Bakersfield, CA 93313.
