All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== Bakersfield Californian Joseph Michael McCann February 19, 1922-March 27, 2001 Joseph Michael McCann, 79, passed away on 03-27-2001 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Our father was born in Krebs, Oklahoma but his family migrated to Montebello, California where he grew up. After high school, our father had an appointment to Annapolis but, acquiescing to his mothers wishes, he stayed home to help care for her as the youngest child of the family. While still in high school, our father began working in the newspaper pressroom after school. He continued in that profession for 49 years, working his way up the corporate ladder, and ultimately retiring from The Bakersfield Californian in 1987. During his retirement years, he and mom relocated to Yucaipa, CA., where he worked 2 days a week in the storage rental business until the cancer would no longer allow him to work. They moved back to Bakersfield in January 2001. Our father was very proud of his military service in the Army Air Corp during WWII as a Staff Sergeant Glider Mechanic in the 55th Troop Carrier Squadron in New Guinea, the Southern Philippines, and Luzon. He received medals for the American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, Good Conduct, WWII Victory and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Bronze Star. Although small in stature, our father was a giant of a man. Growing up, he was always there with mom attending all of our functions and participating in many of them. He always had a positive attitude about his cancer and told the family that he had a wonderful wife, good kids, and good grandchildren and there was nothing more in life a man could want. Our father passed away peacefully at home with all of his family members at his side. Love of family was always the most important thing in his life. He died as he had lived his life with dignity and honor and on his own terms. He was deeply loved, and will be dearly missed by, his surviving wife of 53 years Emily Jewell McCann; son Robert Jennings I; daughter Joann Jewell Blaylock; grandson Robert Jennings II; granddaughter DeAnna & Husband Tony Gullotta; granddaughter JoLane Jewell Blaylock; and great grandsons Anthony Joseph & Dominic Jennings Gullota. The family conveys their heartfelt thanks to the members of Hoffman Hospice and the Neptune Society for their love and compassion during this difficult time. A memorial celebration of our fathers life will be held this Easter Sunday at 4:30 p.m. Please call (661) 398-1277 for location information. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that memorial donations be made in our fathers name to Hoffman Hospice, 6501 Schirra Crt, Suite 301, Bakersfield, CA 93313. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Return to Pittsburg County Archives: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ok/pittsburg/pittsburg.htm
