All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== JOHN STRONG Published on November 5, 1997 The Santa Rosa Press Democratt John William Strong, who retired from Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo in 1994, died of cancer Sunday at his Petaluma home. Strong, 70, worked in radiation control and the refueling of nuclear submarines as a physical science technician. His career spanned 33 years and involved trips to San Diego, Pearl Harbor and elsewhere to work on submarine refueling. Born in Krebs, Okla., Strong enlisted in the Navy during World War II and served aboard ship in the South Pacific. He came to Sonoma County from Phoenix, Ariz. Strong and his wife, Patricia, were married 37 years. The couple enjoyed travel, including attending Strong's 50th high school class reunion in Oklahoma and Patricia Strong's family reunion in Ohio. They also enjoyed camping and visiting Lake Tahoe. Strong also liked horse racing. His wife was able to accompany Strong on some of his submarine work in other ports. Strong was a member of the International Order of Foresters and the Petaluma Moose Lodge and was a former member of the Santa Rosa Moose Lodge. In addition to his wife, Strong is survived by his sons, Ronald Pronechen of Stockton, William Pronechen of Austin, Texas, Dan Strong of Hawthorne, Nev., and Kevin Strong of Rohnert Park; daughters, Marie Radcliffe of Kent, Ohio, Lana Beckstrom of Sacramento, Juana Sue Moore of Paso Robles, April Murrell of San Francisco and Carol Schwartz of Sebastopol; sister, Patsy Kabasan of Las Vegas, Nev.; mother, Rachel Strong of Hawthorne, Nev.; 25 grandchildren; and six greatgrandchildren. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Parent-Sorensen Mortuary, Magnolia Avenue and Keokuk Street in Petaluma. Inurnment is private.
