All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ========================================================================== ::Oak Hill Cemetery--McAlester OK Shields, Winburn McGowan Winburn McGowan Shields, 92, of Stoneham, MA, formerly of McAlester, OK, died Saturday, November 30, 2002 at Life Care Center, Stoneham, MA. Services were held on Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at Bishop Chapel of Memories. Interment was at Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service. The family asks that any donations be made to your favorite children's charity. Dr. Randall Adams officiated. Winburn was born on June 4, 1910 in McAlester, Oklahoma to Wirt Edward and Ora Mittie Cowling McGowan. She received her Masters Degree from Central State University and her undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University and was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa at Oklahoma State. Winburn was an elementary school teacher for 39 years. She started her teaching career at McAlester, Oklahoma. Winburn mostly taught first grade but also started the first kindergarten program at Ridgeview Elementary School in Oklahoma City. Winburn was a member of the McAlester First Baptist Church and also the Quail Springs Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, formerly known as the Nichols Hills Baptist Church. While a member of the Nichols Hills Baptist Church, she taught 13 year old girls in Sunday School for many years. Survivors include: daughter, Jackie Shields Roy of Melrose, MA; sister, June Newman of Arlington, VA, formerly of McAlester, OK; 2 nieces, Helen Newman Roche of McLean, VA and Ora Ann Hare of Edmond, OK; nephew, Wirt Cain of Cincinnati, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph Shields in 1984 and a sister, Fowla Cochran.
