"Red" Barnes officiating. Burial follows at Avoca Cemetery. Mrs. Pettit died June 18, 2003, at an Ada hospital. She was born May 3, 1927, at Asher to Tom and Bessie Davis Sanders. She was a 1945 graduate of Asher High School. She and Harold Pettit were married July 6, 1946, at Van Buren, Ark. Mrs. Pettit was part owner of Sanders Laboratory in Tecumseh. Mrs. Brinlee was a homemaker and an active member of Morris Memorial Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and a great-grandson, Hagen Carlyle Brinlee. She died June 22, 2003, at an Allen nursing facility. She was born July 1, 1906, at Higbee, Mo., to William Sloan and Mary Ethel Howerton Walton. She attended grade school at Higbee and later graduated from Cushing High School. She was also a graduate of Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater, obtaining a degree in English. She and Uel Parker Leach were married in December 1934 at Stillwater. He died June 1950 in Osage County. Mrs. Leach taught school at Coyle and Marshall, and taught high school English at Foreacre. Following her husband’s death, she resumed teaching in Shidler. In 1959, she moved to Alamogordo, N.M., and taught until her retirement in 1971. Mrs. Leach was affiliated with the First Christian Church in Shidler and the First Methodist Church in Texarkana, Texas. She was a longtime member of the Order of the Eastern Star, P.E.O., and an exhibitor and instructor of tatting at the Museum of Regional History in Texarkana. She was preceded in death by a son, Dale Roger Leach in 1960. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Leach Adcock, Texarkana; two sons, Kent W. Leach, Ada, and Mark K. Leach, Big Sky, Mont.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was a lifelong resident of this area. She was a homemaker and a Baptist. Mr. Spearman died June 23, 2003, at a Tulsa hospital. He was born Sept. 24, 1923, at Bugtussle to William Guy and Bertha Skelton Spearman. He attended school in the Bugtussle area. He and Mamie Holloway were married Sept. 29, 1944, at McAlester. Mr. Spearman lived in McAlester until 1959 before relocating to Ada. He began working in the grocery business as a young boy and continued for 48 years. He was employed as the field director for the Hale-Halsell Company, retiring in 1986 after 27 years of service. Following his retirement, he moved back to McAlester. Mr. Spearman was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Ada and later joined the First Church of the Nazarene in McAlester where he served as Sunday school superintendent, Sunday school teacher, church board member and held a district office. He was also a volunteer at the Stipe senior center. He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Bertha Spearman; two sisters, Lillian Freedle and Mildred Fields; and a brother, John Spearman. Gary Brandt officiating. Burial follows at Maxwell Cemetery. Mrs. Bergsnes died June 25, 2003, at a Noble nursing facility. She was born July 11, 1916, at Galey to Oscar and Ola Neal Rankin. She attended school in Galey and later graduated from Ada High School. She graduated from East Central State College and obtained her master’s degree from Columbia University. She also studied at Mexico University. She had lived in the Byars area most of her life, returning in 1948 from Sable, N.Y. She and Martin A. Bergsnes were married July 11, 1946. He died May 12, 2003. Mrs. Bergsnes was an elementary and high school English, Spanish and speech teacher in Asher as well as in many other states. She was affiliated with First Lutheran Church. She was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Gabbott. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn and husband Tony, Lotus, Calif., and Linda Moore and husband Fred, Norman; two sons, Kris Bergsnes, Nashville, Tenn., and Martin Bergsnes, Byars; two brothers, Selman Rankin, Byars, and Samuel Rankin, Oklahoma City; two sisters, Novella Hale, Ada, and Dixie Ward, Tulsa; and three grandchildren, Matt Moore, Natalie Moore and Laurie Moore, all of Norman. Burial follows at Allen Cemetery, Allen. Mr. Sweat died June 24, 2003, at his home. He was born May 12, 1937, near Lone Oak in Coal County to Buck and Elizabeth Woods Sweat. He was a lifelong resident of this area, attending grade school in Lula and graduating from Tupelo High School in 1957. Mr. Sweat was a concrete finisher for Newell Oliver Construction. He was a Southern Baptist and served in the National Guard. He was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Sweat Harden, June 18, 1998; and four brothers, Knox Lee Sweat, Nov. 1, 1999, Hugh Sweat, Aug. 24, 1984, Buck Sweat Jr., February 1987, and Vernon Sweat, Jan. 30, 1944, while serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in New Guinea. Burial follows at West Lawn Cemetery. Dr. Johnston II died June 24, 2003, at Bixby. He was born Oct. 10, 1943, at Henryetta to Francis Earl and Jessie Mae Rogers Johnston. He and Bonnie McAnally were married Aug. 18, 1967, at Coyle. Dr. Johnston II was a Board Certified Podiatrist for 25 years. He graduated from Central State (University of Central Oklahoma) in 1967 with a double degree in chemistry and biology. He attended the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine and graduated as valedictorian of the class in 1976. He completed his surgical residency in 1977 and earned his EED, a doctorate in higher education from Oklahoma State University in 1994. He attended the Parkview Baptist Church and was a member of the Oklahoma Podiatric Medical Association and the American Podiatric Medical Association. He was also a 32 degree Mason, a member of the Ada Masonic Lodge, lifetime member of the Ada Amateur Radio Club, a Baptist Deacon and a member of MENSA. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Johnston, of the home; three children, Heather Russell and husband Greg, Poteau, Shannon Thompson and husband Ryan, Tulsa, and Tres Johnston, Stillwater; his mother, Jessie Mae Hunter and husband Gabe, Henryetta; and three grandchildren, Aryn and Garrett Thompson and Tyler Russell. Scroggins officiating. Ms. Chaddick died June 24, 2003, at a local nursing facility. She was born March 2, 1919, at Francis to Bervie A and Rebecca Knight Chaddick. She attended grade school at Francis and later graduated from Francis High School. She was also a graduate of East Central State College in Ada. Upon graduating from college, she taught in public schools for five years. She taught in Mill Creek, Blackwell and Ardmore, teaching English, math and speech. She left public teaching to go into Girl Scouting as a professional for 22 years. She attended college classes during this time, earning a master's degree in English and math. She quit professional Girl Scouting in 1968 to teach in Indian schools. She taught in Concho near EI Reno and Riverside Indian School in Anadarko for more than 19 years. During her time in Concho/Anadarko, she was very involved in American Indian Scouting Association. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Francis. She was also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, initiated in 1944. She was a member of the American Indian Boy Scouting/Girl Scouting Association for many years and volunteered at the Pontotoc County Literacy Coalition Reading programs, retiring in 2001. She was a member of the Oklahoma Educators Association, National Educators Association and Oklahoma Teachers of Math. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Becca Chaddick; a brother, Clifford Chaddick; a sister-in-law, Mary Baxter; and nephew, Clifford "Cliffie" Chaddick. He and Vicki Boydstun were married June 3, 1972, in Muskogee. Mr. Fleming moved to Konawa from Rattan in 1989. He was a teacher and coach at Konawa High School until his retirement in May 2002. He was currently employed as an insurance agent for Horace Mann Insurance Company. He was a member of the Grace Community Church in Konawa, the Oklahoma Education Association, National Education Association, National Rifle Association and Oklahoma Coaches Association. He was also an ordained minister with the Federation of Christian Churches. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Vicki Fleming, of the home; two sons, Christopher Lance Fleming and wife Leslie, Okmulgee, and Nathan Lee Fleming and wife Amanda, Ada; a daughter, Chelsea Renee Fleming, of the home; a brother, Joe Lee Fleming, Winnsboro, Texas; and five grandchildren, Darius Fleming, Christopher Lance Fleming Jr., Lex Fleming, Jaylee Fleming and Brooklynn Fleming. He was born April 24, 1921, at Okemah to Francis Marion and Effie Bass Streetman. He had been a resident of Konawa since 1930. He and Wilda Walker were married Nov. 9, 1947, at the First Baptist Church of Konawa. Mr. Streetman served in the U.S. Navy as a First Lieutenant during World War II. He was a 1942 graduate of Oklahoma A&M (OSU) and was the owner of Streetman's Grocery in Konawa. He was a member of the Konawa First Baptist Church and the Konawa Lion's Club for many years, serving as zone chairman and governor. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Frank Streetman and Morris' Streetman. He owned and operated Ada Typewriter and Supply from 1946 to 1992. He worked for Douglas Aircraft during World War II in the Aleutian Islands, where he served one year as an office equipment supervisor. He was an active member of First Baptist Church since 1946, where he taught Sunday school, was a choir member and solo vocalist. He was a member of the Kiwanis club, receiving the Legion of Honor for 35 years of service. Survivors include his companion, Billie McNair, of the home; one son, Linden Pherigo, Norman; two brothers, Kenneth Pherigo, Okmulgee, and Don Pherigo, Oklahoma City; one sister, Doris Harriman, Uvalda, Texas; one grandson, Shawn Pherigo, Ada; two granddaughters, Angela Long, Ada, and Julie, Elgin; and four great-grandchildren. He came to Ada in 1974 from Muskogee. He attended school in Oklahoma City and graduated from Oklahoma City University with a bachelor’s degree in business management. He received a master’s degree in education from East Central University. He was previously employed as a counselor with the Ada Youth Shelter and later taught in the Ada school system for 27 years from 1975 to 2002. He and Paula Landrith were married Jan. 20, 1968, at Ada. He was a charter member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Ada, where he served on all boards at the church. He was past president of the board of the Ada Campfire Girls. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Gulf War. He was preceded in death by his father, Willard Roberts; a sister, Nancy James; and two grandchildren, Will Roberts and Joy Roberts. Survivors include his wife, Paula Roberts, of the home; one son, Ryan Roberts and wife Kathy, Broken Arrow; one daughter, Meredith Morris and husband Britt, Hot Springs, Ark.; his mother, Lucille Roberts Crandall, Ada; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Paul and Charlotte Landrith, Ada; brother-in-law and sister-in- law, Tom and Gail Landrith, Ada; an aunt, Marjorie Sneed, Ada; and one grandson, Samuel Paul Roberts.
