Burial follows at Rosedale Cemetery. Mrs. Smith died Sept. 17, 2003, at an Oklahoma City hospital. She was born June 19, 1909, at Whitebead, Garvin County, to George Willis and Minnie Salmon Southern. She graduated from Whitebead High School and came to Ada in 1925 from Pauls Valley. She received a bachelor of arts and a master’s of education degree from East Central. She and William Oral Smith were married Aug. 19, 1928. Mrs. Smith taught third grade at Washington School for 30 years. She served as past president of the PTA, president of the Tanti allied Arts group from 1957-58, and treasurer and president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). While serving as treasurer of AAUW, she was instrumental in bringing a traveling theater group to Ada and distributing $200 scholarships to nine female students at East Central. She was also a long-standing member of the Oklahoma Education Association and the Oklahoma Retired Educators Association. It was at the latter that she received the 1996 Very Important Person Award. She was also a member of the Women’s Educational Group of Delta Kappa Gamma. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly Walker, on March 4, 1995. Survivors include a son, W. Oral Smith Jr., and wife Elaine, Andover, Mass.; a sister, Blanche Southern Campbell, Pauls Valley; five grandchildren, Rhonda Walker Watson, Norman, Deidre Walker Thomasson, Lexington, Keith Walker, Yukon, David Smith, Salem, N.H., and Stephen Smith, Alexandra, Va.; and five great- grandchildren, Zane Alexander, Norman, Sean Alexander, Orlando, Fla., Jason Miller, Purcell, Adam Walker and Ashley Walker, both of Yukon. Burial followed at Byrd’s Prairie Cemetery, Tupelo. Mrs. Rush died Sept. 19, 2003, at a local hospital. She was born June 11, 1927, at Wister to Marion Olen and Mary Elizabeth Bullard Canida. She graduated from Tupelo High School and attended LPN school at North Eastern A&M at Miami. She married O.C. Rush. She was later married to Clark Cogburn in 1977. Mrs. Rush was employed as a nurse for 26 years and was a member of Southwest Church of Christ. She came to Ada in the early 1970s from Miami. She was preceded in death by a son, Steven David Rush, 1976; three brothers, Earl Canida, Burl Canida and Paul Canida; and two sisters, Pearl Kolb and Josephine Burnside. Survivors include a son, Roger Allan Rush, Oklahoma City; five sisters, Opal Canida, Bonnie Gregory, Joyce Holland, all of Ada, Hazel Swenson, Ponca City, Lillian "Billye" Gray, Pickett; two brothers, Bill Canida, Ada, and David Canida, Franklin, Tenn.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. She was a homemaker in Cheyenne, Wyo., and owned her own bakery in Seneca, Kan. She retired in Ada. She and Al Lee Gurley were married Sept. 26, 1946, at Ada. Mrs. Gurley was a member of Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ernest, Jack and Russell Aday. Survivors include her husband, Al Gurley, of the home; two sons, Jimmy Gurley and wife Susan, and Gene Gurley and wife Debbie, all of Ada; and seven grandchildren. He was a construction laborer, oil field worker and part-time roofer. He was baptized at Faith Baptist Church in Ada in June 1986. She was born Oct. 15, 1915, to Marcus and Lucy Frank Emarthle at Konawa. She was a lifelong resident of Konawa and attended school at Mekusuky Mission. She was a homemaker and was a member of the Baptist faith and attended Cold Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Eastman Harjo; three brothers, Barney Tiger, Alex Emarthle, Jimmy Emarthle; three sisters, Susie Emarthle, Eliza Johnson, Yannah Factor; and two grandchildren. Mr. Hall died Sept. 22, 2003, at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was born Dec. 18, 1946, to Alva Douglas and Geraldine Stricker Hall at Ada. He attended Ada schools and graduated from Ada High School in 1965. He attended East Central University and was employed as a police officer for a short time. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era. ELIZABETH SCHMELLING ADA — Memorial services for Dr. Elizabeth Curtis Schmelling, 66, Ada, are 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the Rev. John Norvell officiating. Dr. Schmelling died Sept. 20, 2003, at an Ada hospital. She was born March 17, 1937, to Quin Fisher and Eleanor C. Springer Curtis at Ithaca, N.Y. She came to this area in 1975 from Buffalo, N.Y. She graduated from Morgantown, W.Va., high school. She received a bachelor’s of science degree from Cornell University; a master’s of science in nursing from University of California; and a Ph.D. in nursing from Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. She was a public health nurse in Boston, Mass., San Francisco, Calif., Oakland, Calif., and Buffalo, N.Y. She was a professor of nursing and department chair at East Central University in Ada. Under her leadership, the nursing department gained a national reputation for excellence and was rated one of the best undergraduate nursing programs in the nation. She was a member of Ada Sunrise Rotary Club, Oklahoma Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, and National League for Nursing. She was a member and president of the Oklahoma Board of Nursing, and a member of Governor’s Health Care Commission. As a member of Soroptomist Club of Ada, Dr. Schmelling led the effort to have the Arbuckle-Simpson aquifer declared a sole-source aquifer by the U.S. EPA. She and Stephen G. Schmelling were married March 13, 1966, at Los Gatos, Calif. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Survivors include her husband, Stephen G. Schmelling, of the home; two sons, Frederick Schmelling and wife Janet, Dallas, Texas, and Dr. Daniel Schmelling, Arlington, Va.; two brothers, Dr. Charles Curtis, Tucson, Ariz., and Thomas Curtis, Arlington, Va.; a sister, Margaret Mason, Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and a grandson. He and Sandra Atkeson were married in 1987 at Gainesville, Texas. He was preceded in death by his mother, Wilma Jean Atkeson, in 1998; and his father, Peet Atkeson, in 1985. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church in Ada and a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She and Woodrow Wilson Coats were married September 1932 at Holdenville. They made their home in Hughes County and owned and operated the local Drive Inn. He preceded her in death. She was born Feb. 22, 1907, to Frank M. and Grace Mae James Stripling at Iron Chapel, near Purcell, McClain County, Indian Territory. She lived in the Ada area most of her life, then moved to Sulphur in 1997. She graduated from Blanchard High School in 1926 and later graduated from East Central in 1931 with a bachelor of arts degree. She received a master’s degree in education in 1954. She taught school for 29 years, the final 25 years at Willard Elementary School in Ada, retiring in 1970. She and Calvin P. McCord were married April 26, 1930, at Blanchard. He died in 1974. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ada, recently, she attended Sulphur United Methodist Church. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, Charter member of the Wesleyan Service Guild, Church Women United, member of the Ada Garden Club-Daisy Unit, Sulphur Tulip Garden Club, Tanti Study Club-History Department, Retired Educators Association and the Pontotoc County Retired Teachers Association. She was preceded in death by a son, Don Calvin McCord, in 1974. Survivors include a daughter, Beth Hill, Sulphur; a son, Doug McCord, Edmond; two brothers, Bruce Stripling, Miller Grove, Texas, Luke Stripling, Dickinson, Texas; eight grandchildren, LaDawn Ragsdale, Lindale, Texas, Ramona Bunch, Konawa, Michael McCord, Marty McCord, Oklahoma City, Matthew McCord, Vinita, Shelly Stratton, Blanchard, Greg Hill, Moore, Amy L. She spent her childhood in Ada and Jesse and attended school at Jesse and Stonewall. She attended East Central State Teachers College in Ada. She was an early-day school teacher, teaching in Pickett, Fairview, Red Oak, Sheep Creek, Debs and Lovelady communities. She and Oscar Leon McMinn were married June 1, 1920. He died April 20, 1990. She and her husband lived in Merkel, Texas, Barnsdall, and Wynona, and retired to Stonewall. Later, they moved to Rogers, Ark., to be with family in 1987 and then to Enid in 1998. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Stonewall, and taught Sunday school for 50 years at the various places they lived. She was preceded in death by three brothers. Survivors include a daughter, Pearl Louise Miksch, Enid; two granddaughters, Mary Kraus and husband Tom, Pond Creek, Deborah Campbell and husband Alan, Enid; two great-grandsons, one of which is Dr. Marc Davis, Ada; five great- granddaughters; and seven great-great grandchildren. Burial follows at McCarty Cemetery. Mr. Williams died Sept. 27, 2003, at a Coalgate hospital. He was born Nov. 27, 1941, at Atoka to Lev Vriett L. and Susan E. Helt Williams. He was retired from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections as a correctional counselor. He received the Medal of Courage and Valor from the governor of Oklahoma in 1990 for a hostage incident at the Mack Alford Correctional Center. He served 23 years in the U.S. Air Force and received numerous medals and awards including the Air Force Commendation Medal, Good Conduct Medal from both the Army and Air Force, National Defense Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. He attended numerous schools while in the military. He and Ruth Ann Sherman were married June 16, 1972, at Indialantic, Fla. He was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lev Vriett and Susie Williams; a daughter, Paula Jean Williams; and two brothers, Lonnie and Joe Williams. Most recently, she attended the Tupelo Church of Christ. She was a resident of Coal County for over 75 years. She and Earl D. Woods were married Oct. 18, 1930, at Coalgate. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl D. Woods; a son, Earl W. Woods; and a grandson, Lloyd W. Woods. She retired as a school teacher in Oklahoma after teaching 18 years. She then aught for 23 years in California. She and Arch Bone were married July 5, 1927 in Durant. He died in 1949 at Waurika. She was a member of the Methodist Church and Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include a nephew, Homer and Louise Roberts, Stonewall, and other relatives. He was a longtime member of Oak Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher and active in Banner Baptist Association.
