STALLINGS ADA — Services for J.B. Stallings, 85, Ada, are 11 a.m. Saturday at Southwest Church of Christ, Floyd Kaiser will officiate. Burial will follow at Swan Hill Cemetery. Mr. Stallings died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was born April 5, 1919 at Stuart to Clarence and Ruth Painter Stallings. He graduated from Stuart High School. He came to this area in 1953 from California. He married Euleta Estes. She died in November 1973. He later married Edna Poindexter Oct. 31, 1974, in Ada. Mr. Stallings was a member of Southwest Church of Christ, he served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank for 30 years and was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, Oklahoma Quarter Horse Association, Paint Horse Association. he was known as Ada’s "Will Rogers" and he was a 32 degree Mason. Mr. Stallings served in the U. S. Army during World War II, as a tank commander for the 101st Cavalry. He fought with General Patton in the European and African Campaign, and was a Bronze Star Recipient. Survivors include his wife, Edna Stallings, of the home; one son, Larry Stallings and his wife Barbara, Norman; four daughters, Karla Dale and husband Fred, Hot Springs, Ark., Debbie Andrews and husband Tommy, Ada, Vicki Godwin and husband Tracy, Ada and Jana Williams, Ada; 10 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and countless friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wesley Stallings, and sisters, Norma Wilson and Geneva Crow. Bearers will be Mark Griffin, Kevin Bickerstaff, Gerald Philpot, Glenn Pendergrass, Sherman Ivy and Marvin Mitchell. Honorary bearers will be Dale McGowen, Marvin Barnes, C. B. Mr. Whiten died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004, at his home. He was born Feb. 23, 1924, at Tulsa to Walter Hensley and Clara Cordelia Freeman Whiten. He attended school at Drake and Sulphur. Mr. Whiten married Johnnie Eugene Phillips Dec. 20, 1947 in Ada. She died May 5, 1964 in Tempe, Ariz. Mr. Whiten was a truck driver and terminal manager for Chemical Express in Ada, retiring in 1986. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars - Desert Storm Post in Ada. Survivors include one son, David Whiten, Ada; three daughters, Judy Christopher and husband Gary, Ada, Nancy Haney and husband Gary, Ada, and Sandi Roberts and husband Austin, Ada; one brother, Doc Whiten, Colleyville, Texas; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren. He was born Feb. 18, 1912, at Collinsville. He was a 60-year member of Wah-Shah-She Masonic Lodge at Pawhuska. He was also a 32nd-degree Mason and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He married Ann Piper. She preceded him in death. Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 85 Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery. Mr. Pitman died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at his home. He was born Nov. 1, 1917, at McLoud to Samuel and Narcissus Crockett Pitman. He lived in the Seminole area for 22 years, and moved to Ada two years ago. Mr. Pitman married Dora Jordan April 1, 1951. He was owner of an oilfield service company in North Dakota for several years. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church and served in the U. S. Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Dora Pitman, of the home; one son, Jim L. Criswell Funeral Home, Ada ======================= Sunday, October 3, 2004 Ann McCandless EDMOND — Memorial services for Anne Roodhouse McCandless, 67, Edmond, are 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hahn-Cook/Street and Draper Chapel. Mrs. McCanldess died Sept. 30, 2004. She was born in Ada Oct.10, 1936, to Charles Weston and Annie Carroll Roodhouse. She graduated from Hockaday High School in Dallas, Texas, in 1954. She attended Briarcliff Junior College in New York before graduating from the University of Oklahoma with her B.A. and then her M.A. degrees. She continued graduate work through the summer of 1964. While in college Mrs. McCandless was a member of Plato, was an officer of Kappa Kappa Gamma, was a swimming instructor, and placed second in an OU speech contest. She worked as a graduate assistant teaching freshman English while working on her M.A. at OU and was assistant professor of English from 1961-1967 at Central State University. Later she served as editor for the Economy Company, which later became known as McGraw-Hill. She served as a volunteer on the Post Adjudication Review Board of Oklahoma County Juvenile Justice System. She also trained and showed German Shephards. Survivors include her husband of 43 years, John McCandless; son, Craig McCandless and wife Holly and their son Jacob of Billings, Mont.; daughter, Lea McCandless of Ferndale, Mich.; brothers-in-law, Jack McCandless of Denver, Colo., Robert McCandless of Washington, D.C., and sister-in-law, Betty McCandless of Oklahoma City. He was born July 15, 1920, at Florence, Ala., to Hulet Thomas and Rebecca Ruth Hall Rice. He attended schools in Alabama, Madill and Wapanucka. He was a cotton farmer and cattleman. He served as a medic in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a former member of Clarita Methodist Church and member of Coalgate Methodist Church since 1997. He married Delores Fredena O’Neal Jan. 25, 1947, at Coalgate. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Hulet Thomas and Rebecca Ruth Hall Rice, and an infant sister, Myrtle Judith Rice. Mickey Keith will officiate. Mrs. Dew died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at a local nursing home. She was born Nov. 14, 1914, near Sasakwa, to the Rev. David C. and Cora Brown Blackhawk. She attended school at Wetumka and moved to Ada in 1932 where she attended school at East Central University. She married Henry Dew Nov. 26, 1941, in Ada. He died March 30, 1976. Mrs. Dew was secretary-accountant and office manager for K-TEN TV, retiring in 1976 after 27 years of service. She was active for several years in the American Legion Auxiliary, Business and Professional Women and Hospice of Pontotoc. She was a member of Evangelistic Temple. CLIBURN ADA — Services for Charles Ellis Cliburn, 83, Ada, are 2 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, the Rev. C. David Cliburn, minister of Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church, Raytown, Mo., will officiate. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery. Full Military honors will be conducted by the Tinker Air Force Honor Guard. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Criswell Funeral Home. Mr. Cliburn died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was born Dec. 4, 1920, at Hazlehurst, Miss., to Charles Inge and Addie Ruth Bufkin Cliburn. He attended school at Shady Grove, Miss., and graduated from Hazlehurst, Miss. high school in 1939. Mr. Cliburn received an associates degree from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College in Wesson, Miss., in 1941, an B.A. degree from McKendree College in Lebanon, Ill., in 1957, a B.S. Ed. Degree in Industrial Arts at Southeastern State University in Durant in 1967 and a MS Ed. in counseling from East Central State University in Ada in 1971. He married Mary Jane Grigsby Feb. 18, 1945. They moved to Ada in August 1971 from Shawnee. Mr. Cliburn was an Industrial Arts teacher in Shawnee from 1967-1971 and a counselor/instructor for disabled students at East Central State University from 1971 until his retirement in 1983. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was an Air Force career officer, retiring in 1965 as a lieutenant colonel. During World War II, he was with the 91st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force in England from 1942-1943. He was the first pilot to finish 25 missions over Nazi occupied territories. He was the most decorated pilot in the 8th Air Force at the end of his tour of duty in 1943. Mr. Cliburn was a 20 year member and an elder of the First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Ada Rotary Club/Rotary International since 1973, having held several offices including president in 1986, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also active with the Meals on Wheels in Ada for more than 20 years. Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Cliburn, of the home; two sons, David Cliburn and wife Shelley, Kansas City, Mo., and Jeff Cliburn and wife Jill, Ada; a daughter-in-law, Sherri Cliburn, Lawton; one daughter, Kathy Tappe and husband David, Shawnee; nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Putnam and husband Elton, Tupelo, Miss. He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy G. Cliburn and two brothers, James W. Cliburn and Cecil D. Cliburn. John Haynes will officiate. Burial follows at Rosedale Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 6 p.m. Monday at Criswell Funeral Home. Mr. Bonar died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at a local hospital. He was born April 3, 1925, at Henryetta, Okla., to Clyde L. and Jama Haynes Bonar. He graduated from Horace Mann High School and also attended East Central State College. After serving in the U.S. Army-Air Corps in World War II, he returned to Ada in 1946. He married Patricia Phelps at in 1948. They enjoyed their children, grandchildren, world travel, friends and sunsets. Joe also enjoyed golf and good conversation. A longtime Ada businessman, Joe worked in the family business, Bonar Auto Supply, from 1938 to 1965 when he and his brother Bob purchased it from their father. In 1982, Joe became sole owner and passed it to his son Bruce in 1989. A civic leader, Joe served as Ada City councilman and mayor. He also represented this area in AWO, Automotive Wholesalers of Oklahoma. A member of Ada Kiwanis Club for more than 50 years, he served in many capacities, including president in 1969. Joining First Baptist Church in 1938, he served many years as a deacon, sang in the church choir and worked in Sunday School. He was born Sept. 23, 1919, in White County, Tenn., to Raymond David and Naomi Jane Clouse McCoy. He attended school in Ada. Mr. McCoy was owner and operator of "Pete’s Pick-up and Delivery" service in Ada in the 1950s He was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, founding member of the Disabled American Veterans local chapter, where he held various offices, a member of the Civil Air Patrol and American Red Cross. Mr. McCoy served in the U. S. Army during World War II in Australia and New Guinea. Survivors include a brother, Rip McCoy and wife Mildred, El Paso, Texas, and numerous nephews and nieces, including great-nephew David Sweet, Ada. He was preceded in death by a brother, Curtis McCoy, and a sister, Molly Fowler. David Fortner, will officiate. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Visitation is 2 to 4 p.m. today at Criswell Funeral Home. Mr. Fortner died Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at his home. He was born Sept. 25, 1917, at Citra to Willie Austin and Bertie Kimbrough Fortner. He lived all his life in this area and attended Hamilton School. Mr. Fortner married Beatrice Vera Brooks Jan. 4, 1938. He was a farmer and brick mason’s helper. Mr. Fortner was a member of Rocky Point Missionary Baptist Church since the early 1950s. He was ordained a deacon in 1972. Survivors include his wife, Bea Fortner, of the home; two daughters, Patsy Young, Ada, and Joy Baker and husband Gary, Ahloso; four sons, Kenneth Fortner and wife Patricia, Lula, David Fortner and wife Paula, Canton, Texas, Dennis Fortner, Texarkana, Texas, and Ellis Fortner and wife Frances, Lula; 15 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Bearers are grandsons, Clay Young, Brad Fortner, Scott Fortner, Kenny Fortner, Travis Fortner and David Wayne Fortner. Honorary bearers are Truman Teel, Bill Cooper, Simon Young, Lewis Daniels, Gary Baker and Donald Brooks. Deacon Mike Radosevich will officiate. Mr. Smith died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004, at a Sulphur nursing home. He was born Nov. 14, 2004, at Sherman, Texas, to Asa Butterfield and Mildred Roff Smith. His early childhood was spent in Sherman, Texas, but he later became a longtime resident of Sulphur, before moving to Ada 15 years ago. Mr. Smith was a general maintenance technician. He served in the U.S. Navy during World war II, he was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a fisherman and musical composer. He was a direct descendant of the Roff pioneers who initially settled Roff, Indian Territory in 1883. Survivors include a nephew, Paul Young, Ada, and a niece, Shirley Ann Baber, Norman. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mildred L. Young. She was born Aug. 15, 1932, at McGargle, Texas, to Wesley and Mary Ellen Bishop. She attended school in Texas and moved to Allen in 2001 from Camp Wood, Texas. She married Thomas "Hardy" Tinsley Dec. 21, 1947. Mrs. Tinsley was a bookkeeper and homemaker. Mr. Buckmaster died Oct. 8, 2004, in Orland. He was born Dec. 11, 1923, to Richard and Eula Buckmaster at Sasakwa. He was an honorary graduate of Orland High School in 2002.Mr. Buckmaster served in the Army Air-Corps 15th Air Force during World War II. He was a member of the Orland Eagles, Moose and V.F.W. He worked in the oilfields and drove trucks until his retirement in the early 1990s. He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and two infant sons. Survivors include his wife , Mary Ellen; three sons, Victor Mello, Kirkwood, Michael Mello, Sacramento, and Richard Buckmaster, Orland; two daughters, Rhonda Kennedy Mello, Cleveland, Okla., Paulette Wahismith, Forsyth, Mo., and April Mendes, Ord Bend; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Miller, Oklahoma City, Okla.; and numerous family and friends.
