Burial follows at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Air Force, Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo. He died May 30, 2005, at Coffeyville. He was born Sept. 4, 1932, at Chanute to Evarista Gutierrez and Bernie Mendoza. He was a 1951 graduate of Field Kindley Memorial High School, Coffeyville. He served the U.S. Army from 1951-54. He also served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954, until his retirement in 1971. He retired with the rank of T Sgt. Mr. Mendoza served in Korea and Vietnam, as well. Mr. Mendoza worked for the U.S. Postal Service at Phoenix, Ariz. for ten years. His family then moved back to Kansas and resided in the Humboldt community. He and his wife, Connie, moved to Coffeyville September of 2004. He was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church, Coffeyville. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and a sister. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Angelina Bennett, Collinsville, Ill., Joni Mendoza, Phoenix, Ariz., Susan Baines, Juneau, Alaska, and Charlene Isit, Phoenix; three sisters, Corrine Perez, Chanute, Lydia Magruder, Las Cruces, N.M., and Cathy Lamb, Phoenix; six brothers, Jess Mendoza, Humboldt, Tony Mendoza, Tulsa, Okla., Joe Mendoza, El Paso, Texas, Richard Mendoza, Ada, Okla., Phillip Mendoza, Oklahoma City, Okla., and Fred Mendoza, Dallas, Texas; and ten grandchildren. Mr. Shortes died Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at the Norman Veterans Center. He was born June 6, 1919 at Duncan, Oklahoma to Walter A. and Edna S. Hardin Shortes. He attended school at Orange Prairie and graduated from Bray, Oklahoma. Mr. Shortes attended East Central University. He moved to this area in 1951 from Healdton, Oklahoma. He married Alva A. Hunt on June 26, 1942 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Mr. Shortes served as a Staff Sergeant in the U. S. Army from July 6, 1942 to December 14, 1945. He served in the European Theatre of Operations assigned to Company B, 139th Airborne Engineers Battalion, 17th Division. He also served in the Battle of the Bulge, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe. Mr. Shortes ran an Apco Service Station on North Broadway in Ada from 1957 until 1966. He retired from NL Treating Company in June, 1981. He was a member of Morris Memorial Baptist Church, a member of the American Legion and he served for 20 years as a school board member at Latta High School. Scifres Ryan. She attended school at Glenwood and Irving and graduated from Ada High School. She married Lloyd W. Stephens on October 3, 1948. He died May 30, 1988 in Ada. Mrs. Stephens was a beautician for 54 years, she also held state offices on the State Board of Cosmetology. Mrs. Stephens was a longtime member of Oak Avenue Baptist Church for 75 years. Survivors include three nephews, John Ryan and wife Ann, Ada, Jack Ryan and wife Kathy, Renton, Washington, and Steve White and wife Lou Ann, Moore; four nieces, Kay Griffith and husband Sam, Oak Harbor, Washington, Donna Williams and husband Rocky, Ft. He served in the U.S. Army, was in Europe for three years and was discharged Oct. 3, 1950. He moved to this area in 1998 from Sasakwa. He worked as a concrete worker and laborer, a farmer and a punch press operator. He was a member of Seminole Baptist Church. He married Jackie Ann Harjo Nov. 16, 1996, at Birdcreek Baptist Church, Sasakwa. He was a retired farmer and rancher and served in the U.S. Army in Germany doing helicopter maintenance. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, Konawa, a past board member and president of the Seminole County Chapter of Oklahoma Farm Bureau, and a former member of the Konawa Lions Club. He graduated from Oklahoma A&M, Stillwater, with a degree in animal husbandry. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol; his parents; and two sisters, Sue Ellen Raper and Infant Girl Raper. She attended school at Fulton, Mo., where she graduated in 1938, then later attended Kansas State College, Manhattan, Kan., where she graduated with a degree in journalism. She married Kenneth McEntire Aug. 3, 1949, at Manhattan, Kan. Mrs. McEntire worked for TWA and American airlines for five years. She was a welcome hostess and a public journalist She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and a member of the Coalgate Methodist Church since 1980, when she moved to Coalgate. She was also a manor volunteer, member of the music club, Meals on Wheels, a member of Cairo Homemakers, and AARP as well as tutoring at Emerson Elementary School, working as a tour guide for Kaleo Bus Tours and an election worker for Coal County. He married Pat Northcott Dec. 22, 1960. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dick Ward in 1999. He also worked as the regional vice-president, northwest region, based at Spokane, Wash. He was the general manager for People’s Electric Cooperative, Ada, from 1967-77. Mr. Burpo served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was a former member of the Ada Church of the Nazarene. He married Joyce Myrle Hodges Oct. 31, 1959, at Paris, Texas. She died Oct. 23, 1990. He married Bobbie Louthan une 1, 1991, at Albuquerque. He was preceded in death by two sons, Roger Burpo, May 24, 2003, and Brad Kelly in 1978.
