He was born Oct. 7, 1928, at Ada to Barney and Ruby Elmore Abbott. He attended Latta Schools and later was a member of the Latta School Board. He married Betty Jean Putman on Jan. 2, 1948. Mr. Abbott was the owner and operator of a dozer service here in Ada, and later owned and operated Abbott Nursery. He was also employed by the Chickasaw Nation, where he had formerly served as one of the original Chickasaw Legislators. Mr. Abbott was a Baptist. Survivors include his wife, Jean Abbott, of the home; three daughters, Sherry Todd, Norman, Thalia Miller, Ada, and Darla Porter, Ada; one son, David Abbott, Ada; a brother, James Abbott and wife Birdie, Ada; six grandchildren, Dewayne Norvill, Shanda Nelson, Zac Abbott, Julie Russell, Colbi Howard and Sydney Abbott; two great- grandchildren, Payton Nelson and Parker Nelson; and three aunts, Carolyn Aday, Ada, and Myrtle Cooper, Ada, and Mary Camden, Yuma, Ariz. A memorial service was 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church, Bristow, the Revs. Craig Long and Ben Mosley officiating. Mrs. Alcorn was born May 5, 1936, to Travis and Opal Fuller Aston in Bristow. She died July 31, 2007, at Bristow. Mrs. Alcorn grew up in the Bristow area, attending school in both Bristow and Depew. In 1955, she graduated from Bristow High School. She worked and retired from JC Penney's. She also worked for the Creek County Election Board, was involved with Meals on Wheels, and was a mentor at Edison Elementary. Mrs. Alcorn was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bristow, where she was a Sunday school teacher, a choir member and involved in the music ministry program at the nursing home and delivered videos to home-bound church members. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. She married Sonny Alcorn Dec. 8, 1955, at her parents' home in Bristow. Survivors include her husband, Sonny Alcorn of Bristow; two sons, Darrell Alcorn and his wife, Ranay and Bruce Alcorn and his wife, Dava, all of Bristow; a daughter, Luann Davis and her husband, Tim, Bristow; a sister, Gloria Marshall, Ada; a brother, Travis W. Hutchins Maples Funeral Home, Bristow --------------------------------------------------------------------- Austin, Jimmie Sunday, August 5, 2007 SEMINOLE -- Services for Jimmie Austin, 90, Seminole, are 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Seminole, the Rev. Russell Vicars and Tommy Clark officiating. Mr. Austin died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007. He was born May 22, 1917, in Sasakwa to A.L. and Zadie Austin. He married his high school sweetheart, Lucille Marie Pruitt, Dec. 29, 1937, in Holdenville. She died July 12, 2004. At the age of 12, Mr. Austin got a job driving a team of mules in the oilfields. After high school he started work in the oilfields, working for J.B. Barnes Drilling Company, D.B. Malemee Oil Company, and Viersen and Cochran Company. At the age of 34, Mr. Austin bought his first drilling rig and began Austin-Dunham Drilling Company. In 1953, he formed the Austin Drilling Company and in 1958 he and his sons started Austin & Sons Drilling Company. During his 31 years in the drilling business, he drilled more than 1,400 wells. In November 1981, he sold all his drilling rigs and began increasing his volume of activity with working interests in oil and gas wells. He formed Austin Equipment Sales Company and began buying oilfield equipment including components for drilling rigs. In 1990 he sold all of the oilfield equipment and began concentrating on his investments and cattle company. Mr. Austin sold the cattle business in 2001. He was president of Austin Management Corporation, Austin Drilling Inc., and Austin Production Company. In 1975, Mr. Austin helped the city of Seminole expand the town's nine-hole course into an 18-hole venue, which he operated for many years. Mr. Austin was a major contributor to the renovation of the University of Oklahoma Golf course, and the course is named in his honor As a civic leader for Seminole and for the state of Oklahoma, he served on numerous Seminole city commissions, also as a member of the Oklahoma Turnpike Commission and the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority. He worked with the Chamber of Commerce and the Seminole Industrial Authority to recruit industry to the area. He was appointed commissioner for the Oklahoma Department of Transportation in 1987, and continued as commissioner until 2003. He was the founder of Seminole Golf Foundation, Inc., and member of the Seminole Municipal Airport Board. He was the former director of the Seminole Chamber of Commerce, International Association of Drilling Contractors, American Petroleum Institute, and Oklahoma Independent Petroleum Association. He was a former member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and Seminole Water Authority board. He was inducted into the Seminole State College Hall of Fame for his contributions to civic and youth programs, selected as "Man of the Month" by the Oklahoma Petroleum Club, and "Citizen of the Year" by Seminole Chamber of Commerce and a supporter of the Seminole Hospital. Jimmie and Marie Austin endowed a Biblical Research Center and established the Jimmie and Marie Austin Scholarship Fund at Oklahoma Baptist University. They also established the Jimmie and Marie Austin Scholarship Fund at Seminole State College and supported many other programs of the college. Mr. Austin was a member of the First Baptist Church of Seminole. She married George "Lucky" Beck May 21, 1947. She married J.W. Garrison July 4, 1977, in Los Alamos, Calif. During the early years of her life, Mrs. Garrison lived in Artesia, Calif., where she was a homemaker and worked for Dr. Doris as a nurse and office assistant. After her marriage to J.W. Garrison, they moved to Allen where they operated an upholstery shop. While living in Allen, Mrs. Garrison attended Allen Assembly of God Church. They returned to Allen, after living in Paradise, Calif., for several years. Mrs. Garrison returned to California after her husband's death in January 1998. She lived in Corona, for eight years before moving to Chino in May 2007. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Monte Gray and Gayle Gray; her parents, both husbands, twin grandsons and a great-great- granddaughter. She graduated school in Dallas and worked for a number of years at the Carlin shop of Neiman-Marcus department store where she sold fine linens. She also worked for the Arsenal Savings and Loan in Indianapolis as a bookkeeper and head teller before retiring. She was a member of the Thorntown Christian Church, charter member of the Home Economics Extension Club at Dover, a member of the James Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Lebanon, where she served two years as regent, worked as conservation chairwoman and elected vice-chairman of conservation of Indiana. She also served as vice chairwoman of conservation over six Midwest states and awarded a national commendation for her work with Eastern Bluebird Recovery Movement and the Arbor Day planing of the rare American Butternut tree. He was born July 7, 1924, at Fittstown to James Monroe and Callie Mae Coots Massey. He and his family moved to Colbert and later to Ada. He was attending Ada High School when, on Dec. 7, 1942, the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He left then to join the U.S. Navy. After completing basic training, he was assigned to the USS New Jersey. He helped in building the battleship on which he would serve. After sailing through the Panama Canal, the New Jersey arrived to join the fleet in the South Pacific Jan. 9, 1944. Seaman Second Class and gunners mate Massey served during World War II for three years and two months. Upon discharge, he returned to Ada in January 1946 to graduate with his senior class. He attended Murray State College and played football for two years, and finished his college career at East Central State College, where he played football and also received a bachelor's degree. He married Mary Frances Low April 25, 1947, in Ada. She died May 7, 2007. Mr. Massey joined the faculty of Murray State College in 1953, where he coached football, basketball, and track while teaching Psychology and American History. When Sulphur decided to adopt the middle school system, Coach Massey was asked to start the program and hire the faculty. He remained in that position until his retirement. While attending college, she was a member of Blue Curtain Players and The Criterion Club, and served as class reporter her senior year. She moved to Ada in 1955 from Edmond and worked at First National Bank Trust Department for 12 years. She was a volunteer at Valley View Regional Hospital from 1984-2007 and volunteered approximately 7,000 hours. Her last assignment was working in the gift shop at the hospital. She was a member of Ada Tanti Study Club (Fine Arts Department) from 1955-2007, Ada "Key of G Kitchen Band," and First Baptist Church and Faith Sunday School Class. She married Jack Dean Weiss June 6, 1947. He died March 12, 2000. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Gene Kearby and James Ross Kearby.
