All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm ===================================================================== ::Maple Lawn Cemetery--Thorntown IN Friday, August 24, 2007 ROXIE GILLAN THORNTOWN, Ind. - Services for Roxie Robbins Gillan, 86, Thorntown, Ind., were Thurday at Throntown Christian Church, the Rev. Glen Jewell officiating. Burial followed at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Thorntown. Mrs. Gillan died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at a health care center. She was born April 19, 1921, in Ozan, Ark., to William Riley and Emma Laura Poer Robbins. She married Robert Lee Gillian Oct. 19, 1946, in St. Bernard Parish, New Orleans, La. She graduated school in Dallas and worked for a number of years at the Carlin shop of Neiman-Marcus department store where she sold fine linens. She also worked for the Arsenal Savings and Loan in Indianapolis as a bookkeeper and head teller before retiring. She was a member of the Thorntown Christian Church, charter member of the Home Economics Extension Club at Dover, a member of the James Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Lebanon, where she served two years as regent, worked as conservation chairwoman and elected vice-chairman of conservation of Indiana. She also served as vice chairwoman of conservation over six Midwest states and awarded a national commendation for her work with Eastern Bluebird Recovery Movement and the Arbor Day planing of the rare American Butternut tree. She was a member of the Society of Colonial Dames of the 17th Century. Survivors include her husband, Robert Lee Gillian, of the home; two brothers Rual C. Robbins, Ada, Okla., and Kenneth R. Robbins, Garland, Texas; three sisters Marian McGlanahan, Cleburne, Texas, Frances Mobley, Garland, and Stephanie Sill, Ada; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Pernie C. Brown; and two brothers James R. Robbins and William F. Robbins. Memorial contributions may be made to genealogy departments of the Thorntown Public Library and Lebanon Public Library for helping researchers prepare applications for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Society of Colonial Dames.
