Ralph Shirley

FRIONA - Ralph Shirley, 76, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003.

Mass will be at 2:30 p.m. today in St. Teresa's Catholic Church with 
the Rev. Ed Sweeney, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in West Park 
Cemetery in Hereford by Blackwell Funeral Home.

Mr. Shirley was born March 18, 1927, in Ponitoc County, Okla. He 
married Stella Grace Guggemos on Aug. 7, 1949, in Hereford. He moved 
to Friona in 1951 from Hereford.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army. He was manager 
of Pioneer Natural Gas in the Friona office, which became Energas and 
now is Atmos Energy. He was a member of Friona Volunteer Fire 
Department for more than 50 years and served as fire chief for 30 
years.

He taught at Texas A&M fire school in College Station for 31 years. 
He was active in the Friona Little League and Boy Scouts for many 
years.

He was a member of Friona VFW and American Legion. He was a member 
and past president of Friona Chamber of Commerce and Friona Evening 
Lions Club. He was a member of St. Teresa's Catholic Church in 
Friona.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jan Shirley on Aug. 13, 1966.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gary F. Shirley of Houston and 
Richard R. Shirley of Katy; a sister, Rhoda Stevens of Discovey Bay, 
Calif.; and two grandchildren, James and Matthew Shirley.
