Mays Born to James B. and Mary Mays, March 23, 1925 in Ada, Oklahoma, died February 19, 2002. Ben was a rifleman, Corporal Regular Army, in the Rainbow Division, Rhineland (Ardennes Alsace) Central Europe during WWII at the age of 18, and received the Bronze Star for his heroic achievement during the Battle of the Bulge. He grew up in Porterville and graduated from LA Barber College in 1949. Ben practiced barbering on Baker St. & Chester until the 1952 earthquake, for the next 45 years he owned the Sunset Barber Shop on California Ave., retiring only last July. Ben was an avid golfer and also enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Ben and his wife Velta were long time resident of Bakersfield. Ben is survived by 3 sisters: Pat Payne of Yuba City, Estaline Higgins of Porterville, and Polly Armstrong of Marysville, and 3 children: Vivian Cox of Clovis, Michael Mays and Laura Luter of Bakersfield. Ben was the proud grandfather of 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Velta Mays, his four brothers Jack Mays, Olen Mays, Owen Mays, Warren Mays and two sisters, Jackie Pierce and Ada Somers. Private visitation only.
