::Greenlawn Southwest Cemetery--Bakersfield CA

Verda E. McBrayer

Services: Thurs., April 5, 2:30 p.m. Graveside services will be held 
at Greenlawn Southwest Memorial Park, 2739 Panama Ln., Thursday, 
April 5 at 2:30 p.m. for Verda E. McBrayer. She was born on October 
31, 1906 in Ada, I.T. (Oklahoma) and went home with the Lord on April 
1, 2001 in Bakersfield. Services will be conducted by Pastor Jerry 
McCullah, pastor of Greenfield First Southern Baptist Church where 
Verda has been a member for 52 years. Verda was very active in the 
1950s, serving the Womans Missionary Union of the Southern Baptist 
Association in Kern County as President and Treasurer. She was 
President/Director of the W.M.U. at Greenfield, taught Sunday school 
and was church clerk for many years. Prior to moving to Bakersfield 
58 years ago, she and her husband, L. G., owned and operated a 
grocery store in Altus, Oklahoma. She had worked in a bank for four 
years and was a good business woman. The oldest of eight children of 
John W. and Laura Starr, she was preceded in death by her parents; 
her brothers, Hilary, Herman, Houston, J.D., Coy and Archie; and her 
sister, Lorice Jackson. She is survived by her husband of 74 years, 
Lewis G.; her son, Davey Lee and wife, Mona; her daughter, Sue 
Machado; seven grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and one great 
great grandchild; several step-grandchildren; and step-great 
grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Alice of Hanford and Polly of 
Madera.  Visitation will be held today, April 4 from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. 
and Thursday, April 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Greenlawn Southwest
