She was the daughter of Clarence O. and Mary (Atteberry) Huff and older sister of Barford and Alberta. Born in the small community of Leader, near Allen, Oklahoma, Joy attended elementary school in the two-room schoolhouse at Leader and graduated from Allen High School. Shortly after graduation, she married Earl B. Plunk in Holdenville, Oklahoma on May 21, 1938, and moved to Shafter until they built their first home in Bakersfield. At the outbreak of the war, Joy and Earl left their newly completed home and moved to Vallejo, CA where Earl worked at Mare Island Naval Yard. In Napa, their first child, Patricia, was born. Upon returning to Bakersfield, two daughters, Sheila and Marcia, were born. While it took several years to complete, Earl built their home where they would live the rest of their lives together as a family. Earl passed away at their home in 1995. Joy was a homemaker most of her life, but worked several years as a hostess at Salad Bowl and Lorene's Coffee Shop and in private child care services. She enjoyed the company of many friends, both lifelong and new. After the death of her husband, Joy cherished the companionship of wonderful friends she met at the Senior Center on Roberts Lane. Those special friends became part of her extended family. Another special friend was her neighbor, Bertha and her husband David, who lovingly and selflessly cared for Joy and her precious Dog, Trigger, when Joy's health became a challenge. Joy never let her own difficulties stop her from sharing her time and talents with others she cared for. Family included three daughters, Patricia and husband Ken Mabel of Alaska, Sheila Valpredo of Oklahoma, and Marcia and husband Tim Tobin of Shell Beach, CA; brother and sister-in-law, James Williams; nine grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren; several cousins, many nieces and nephews and scores of friends all over the country who were like family. Chapel services will be Friday, January 9, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Chapel. Visitation is scheduled for Thursday evening from 4-8 p.m. www.dignitymemorial.com HILLCREST Memorial Park & Mortuary ========= Joy Marie Plunk Bakersfield Californian Obituaries Joy Marie Plunk Services: Friday, Jan. 9, 2 p.m. Joy Marie Plunk was born September 30, 1920, and passed away at her home on January 5, 2004.
