"Gene" Smith, 86, Ada, are 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church, the Revs. John Haynes and Harold Ware will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. The Chickasaw Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery. Mr. Smith died Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at a local nursing home. He was born Aug. 31, 1923, at Center to Martin Earl and Clara Odessa Collings Smith. He attended school at Vanoss and Latta. Mr. Smith was a World War II veteran serving in the US Army, 44th Infantry Division. He saw combat action in France, Central Europe and the Rhineland. He was awarded three bronze stars, the Good Conduct Medal, expert machine gun medal along with other ribbons. He was discharged as a non-commissioned officer in 1945. He was able to fly to Washington, D.C. on May 17 along with other World War II veterans to see their Memorial honoring their service to their country. This was made possible by the Oklahoma Honor Flight. He was in the heating and air-conditioning business for a few years before joining the Ada Fire Department where he served 24 years, retiring as chief in 1979. He was a member of the Fire Chiefs Association, OSFA and served on various fire service committees and was a certified instructor of the fire services. He furthered his education by attending many special courses at Oklahoma University, Oklahoma State, Southern Methodist and North Texas Universities. After retiring, he served as director of the Local Emergency Management agency for 15 years. He served as president of the Oklahoma Emergency Management Association in 1989. He was the first state treasurer for the Emergency Medical Tech (EMT). Mr. Smith was involved in many civic activities, serving as president of the Optimist Club, the Diamond K Kiwanis and was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Ada. He married Ruth Carver on Dec. 18, 1948. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Smith, of the home; one daughter, Phyllis Smith Blackwell and husband Bob of Norman; grandchildren, Robert Blackwell and wife Kathy of Moore, Kathy Cross and husband Craig of Tulsa, Jennifer Smith of Tulsa, Leean Leu and husband Trevor of Tulsa, Raegan Smith of Tulsa; great-grandchildren, Leigh Kelsey, Ryan and Corey Blackwell, Cayman Cross, Barrick and Rhett Leu; and one great-great-grandson, Kyler Kelsey. BOTTOMS BOTTOMS, Jay (J.D.), 76, of OKC, passed away June 30, 2010. J.D. was born Sept. 9, 1933 in Ada, OK to Emmitt and Wassie Bottoms. J.D. married the love of his life, Betty Bailey Bottoms and had just celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary the day prior to his death. J.D. was a longtime South OKC Banker and prominent businessman. He proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. J.D.'s many ccomplishments include Senior Vice President of Commercial Lending with Arvest Bank, Sr. Vice President of First United Bank, Sr. Vice President of Southwestern Bank, President and CEO of Grant Square Bank, and District Manager of Commercial Credit Corp. He was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Moore, was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Scottish Rite of Guthrie Consistory, and was a Master Mason with Myrtle Lodge #145. J.D. was active in numerous organizations and held many executive positions including: Gideons International-Past Secretary, South OKC Chamber of Commerce- Past Director, Kiwanis Club of South OKC and Capitol Hill-Past President and Director. Although J.D. was extremely active, his proudest accomplishments and favorite moments were times spent with his family and close friends. J.D. was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, JoDean Hall-Lane; and son-in-law, Larry Kooken. Mr. Jordan graduated from Putnam City High School in Oklahoma City in 1944 and attended East Central University in Ada. He moved to Ada in 1953 from Oklahoma City and was employed with Southwestern Bell Telephone for 42 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He had served as a corporal in the United States Army from Sept. 29, 1950, until Sept. 12, 1952. Survivors include his wife, Doris L. She married Albert Lee Keeling on Jan. 9, 1932, at the Egypt Community. He died Feb. 11, 1988. He was born Dec. 10, 1917, at Jenkintown, Pa., to Patrick John and Anna A. Doyle Walsh. He attended Jenkintown schools. He married Helen Maye Potts on Oct. 10, 1942, at Sherman, Texas. While living in Pennsylvania, he was a grower of long stem red roses. Mr. Walsh served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the American Theatre during World War II and retired from the U. S. Air Force in 1964 after 20 years of service. After retirement from the U.S. Air Force, he and his wife moved to Roff. Later, he was a grower for Ada Greenhouse and Donaghey Greenhouse for many years. He was a member of Roff First Baptist Church where he served as deacon for many years, and had also served as the mayor of Roff. Survivors include his wife, Helen Walsh, of the home; two sons, Paul E. Dr. Harris had a psychiatric practice in Albuquerque and was a licensed attorney in the state of New Mexico. He attended Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pa.; Rice University in Houston, Texas; and Stanford University. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Stanford University in 1972, where he specialized in psychiatric medicine, and his law degree from the University of New Mexico in 1993. He was born Nov. 25, 1923, in Marshall County, Oklahoma, to Trixie Bland and Myrtle E. Waterson Stokes. He married Rosie M. Rein in Perry on May 20, 1944. He was an agriculturalist with Oklahoma State University and a veteran of World War II, serving with the Marine Corps. He was raised in Fort Towson, Okla., and moved to Stratford in 1951. He was an honorary chapter farmer and served as presdient of Oklahoma Square Dance Association. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, infant brother Trixie Lee Stokes, Ben McCuan, Wayne McCuan; and one sister, Opal Corgill. After an early retirement, she partnered with her mother and ran a ceramics business, later in life she consulted with, developed and assisted administering various programs and courses at East Central University. Ms. Reese was of the Christian faith, a member of Ada Arts Council where she served as secretary for 20 years. She was active as a youth in the Ada Campfire Girls and later as an adult volunteered with the Campfire Girls. She was president of the Schnauzer Club. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Clinton Dee Howry in 2002. Bearers will be Buddy Covington, Freddie Craig, Lonny Foster, Butch Swanson, Matt Milam, Kenneth Johnson, and Joe Davis.
