He passed away in Ada, Okla., on Sept. 5, 2010. His father was from a mercantile family and owned R.F. Deese and Son Furniture store in Dublin. It was the only furniture store to survive the depression. Frank was the fifth of six children. He was preceded in death by Freeman Deese, James Ira Deese, Thomas Madison Deese and his younger sister — Celia Elizabeth Knox Crawford. Frank graduated from Dublin Georgia High School in 1931 — at the age of 16! He went immediately to the University of Georgia and graduated in 1935 with a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry. He was a Phi Beta Kappa and in the Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity, which is a scholastic fraternity. After graduation, he worked on his master's degree at the University of Georgia and received his Master's Degree in Chemistry in 1936. He was then employed as a research chemist at the Tennessee Valley Authority in Muscle Shoals, Alabama from 1936 to 1942. There, he met and married Mary Keywood Julian in Tuscumbia, Alabama, the town next to Muscle Shoals, on Nov. 13, 1940. When the attack on Pearl Harbor happened and the U.S. came in to World War II, Frank was already accepted to Medical School. He and his wife moved to Atlanta, Georgia, and he attended Emory University Medical School from 1941 to 1945. His entire medical school class was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Force Medical Corps in 1941. He interned at Grady Memorial Hospital in 1945 and 1946. He served at Scott Field Air Force Base in Bellview, Illinois, from 1946 to 1948. After being released from the military, Frank and Mary Keywood looked for a new state and new town to make their home. Driving through Ada, Oklahoma, on July 18, 1948, Frank saw the green marble building, "The Sugg Clinic," at 13th Street and Broadway. At that time, the clinic was a leading medical facility in southeastern Oklahoma. He met Dr. Sugg and Dr. Peterson, the co-founders of the Sugg Clinic. Frank went to Valley View Hospital with Dr. Sugg the next morning and joined the clinic formally the next Monday. The Deese family had been longtime members of the Methodist Church in Georgia and Frank and Mary Keywood joined the Methodist Church in Ada after deciding to make Ada their home. Through the years, the clinic added 20 physicians to the staff. Frank, Dr. Hohl and Dr. Ramsay were the final three doctors by 1979. Many years later, after the original partners retired or passed away, the final three doctors decided to close the clinic and retire, too. Frank handled the business side of the clinic. He went to that green marble building every weekday morning for the next year to turn over the medical records to the patients of Ada and Pontotoc County. Frank closed and locked the doors for the last time in the summer of 1982. Frank is survived by his wife of almost 70 years, Mary Keywood Julian Deese, of the home; two children, Dr. Julian V. Deese of Longview, Texas, and Keywood Deese Jackson, Senior vice president and trust officer at Vision Bank in Ada; and a son-in-law Ben Jackson, who is an attorney. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Charlie Deese, Elliott Deese, Robert McReynolds Jackson and Mary Keywood Jackson. He is also survived by three nephews and four nieces. Frank was a member of the American Medical Association, Oklahoma Medical Association and the Emory Medical School Alumni. Frank was a southern gentleman and was a kind, loving husband, father and grandfather. He delivered many babies over his 40 year medical practice and former patients still remember him with fondness and respect. He used to make hundreds of "house calls" to ill patients at their homes. He may have adopted Oklahoma and become quite a University of Oklahoma supporter and OU football fan, but he never forgot his southern heritage and his love for Georgia peaches! The medical community lost a great doctor when he retired in 1982 and we've lost a great man now. Pericles said, "What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments but what is woven into the lives of others." A memorial service will be held Friday, Sept. 10, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Ada at 14th Street and Broadway. The family has requested that instead of flowers, that anyone wishing to make a donation in his memory please do so to the Music Department at the First United Methodist Church at P.O. Box 566, Ada, Oklahoma, 74821.
