Mr. Netherland died Saturday, Oct. 30 in Tulsa. He was born Aug. 17, 1922 in Crowville, La. to Jake Netherland and Florence Anne Busby Netherland and was one of twelve children. He graduated from Bish Mathis Institute of Business Administration in Monroe, Louisiana, His first job was with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Monroe. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war he moved to Tulsa where he earned a BS in Business Administration and a Masters in Psychology from the University of Tulsa. He began a 31 year banking career at the First National Bank & Trust Company of Tulsa. He received a Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin Graduate School of Banking. Mr. Netherland took an early retirement as Senior Vice President and Director of Administrative Services to work with their son, Gary and other mentally handicapped persons at McCall’s Chapel School in Ada. There he served as Chairman and President. He was very active in many civic, state, and national organizations. He was an active member of Memorial Baptist Church where he served as deacon. He was married to Catherine Jackson for 62 years. They raised two children, Gary Oneal and Catherine Anne. Mr. Netherland was preceded in death by an infant daughter and a son, Gary Oneal. He is survived by his wife, Catherine of Tulsa, daughter Catherine Anne Goddard and her husband, Lindsey of Tulsa, grandchildren Michelle and Diana Goddard of Tulsa. He is survived by one sister, Olline Killian, Crowville, Louisiana and numerous other family members. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Moore’s Southlawn Funeral Home. Rev. Lewis Perry will officiate. Burial will follow Corley Cemetery in Stratford. Mr. Weast died Oct. 29 at a Norman hospital. He was born July 15, 1945 in Leedey to Marvin and Lillie Mearl (Eaton) Weast. He grew up in Stratford where his family owned and operated the Farmer’s Exchange and Produce. He graduated from Stratford High School and was on the first basketball team to go to State under the coaching of Jim Freeman in 1963. Mr. Weast was elected Garvin County Commissioner in 1974 and served eight years. He was a member of the Stratford Roundup Club along with his entire family. He was a farmer and rancher and served in the Oklahoma National Guard. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Stratford. She married Grover “Apple” Thompson in 1927 in Ada. He died in 1993. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker and was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was born June 5, 1928, at Tishomingo to John and Susan Mann Haney. He graduated from Tishomingo High School where he played football. He attended Murray Junior College and East Central State University where his major was in education and a minor in business administration. He served in the Korean Conflict with the 45th Combat Infantry Division. He has currently served in the local chapter of the Combat Infantry Division supporting Veterans and their families. Mr. Haney was in the food service industry for 68 years, from Kirk’s Café in Tishomingo and Sulphur, Pendergraft’s Café and Cafeteria in Ada to the present location of JD’s Café and Cafeteria which he and Georgia Haney opened in 1955. He married Virginia Morris on May 20, 2002. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Haney, of the home; a daughter, Susan Gurley and her husband Jim, Ada; two sons, Doug Haney and his wife Susan, Ada, and David Haney and his wife Dianna, Ada; one stepson, Randy Morris, Branson, Mo.; four granddaughters, Stephanie Duke and Taryn Haney and Mandy Simmons, all of Ada, and Monica Maley, Norman; two grandsons, Shane Gurley, McKinney, Texas, and Jeremy Haney, Midwest City; two step-grandsons, Zane Morris and Chase Morris, both of Ada; four great-grandchildren, Dallas and LeShayne Duke, Ada, Addison Gurley, McKinney, Texas, and Devanee Simmons, Ada; one brother, Gene Haney, Tishomingo; and a sister, Geneva Allison, California. LEONARD TOMBALL, Texas — A memorial service for Don Leonard, 74, will be 2:30 Friday at Tomball Assembly of God Church, Tomball, Texas. Mr. Leonard died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, in Tomball, Texas, at a local hospital. He was born Jan. 18, 1936, in Ada, Okla., to Roy and Eula Northcutt Leonard. He attended Ada City Schools and later served in the U.S. Navy. He was employed by Brockway Glass where he retired in 1980. After retirement he and his wife owned and operated Arlington Garden Center in Ada. On March 19, 1956, he married Josephine Oliver in Ada. Burial will follow at Maxwell Cemetery. Mrs. Garrett died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at an assisted living center in Ada. She was born April 29, 1929, at Oil Center to Hansel and Floy Sutton Burk. She attended Maxwell and Vanoss grade schools and graduated from Vanoss High School. She married O.D. “Pug” Garrett on Aug. 2, 1948. He died Oct. 31, 2008. Mrs. Garrett was a sales clerk for Dillon’s Department Store and the Curiosity Shop in Ada, and a longtime active member of the Oil Center Pentecostal Holiness Church. She played the piano for services for more than 65 years at the church and was also the pianist for Tiger Mountain camp meetings near Henryetta for many years. Survivors include a granddaughter, April Taylor and her husband Chris, Ada; three great-grandchildren, Garrett Taylor, Paige Taylor and Lynndie Taylor; and a son-in-law, Gene Garner, Ada. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Sondra Garner and a grandson, Dustin Garner. He was born May 8, 1924, at Franks to Sim Lee and Nicey Hawkins Greenwood. He attended Franks school. He married Nora Lewis in 1947. She died in 1985. He married Gladys Cravatt Sweet on Jan. 6, 1990. She died July 25, 2001. He later married June Pebworth in December 2001. Mr. Greenwood was a lineman for People’s Electric Cooperative from 1947 until retiring in 1986. He was a member of Blue Baptist Church and an active member of the Chickasaw Honor Guard. Mr. Greenwood served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a medic. She graduated from Byng High School in 1970 and received a Bachelor’s Degree and Masters of Education from East Central University. She married Billy Wayne Sturdevant on Dec. 28, 1971 at Ada. Mrs. Sturdevant was a teacher for the Ada School System from 1973 until 1982, East Central University from 1982 until 1991, and the Byng School System from 1993 until retiring in 2009. She was the Cheer Coach at Ada and Byng High Schools for many years. Mrs. Sturdevant was a member of the Byng Free Will Baptist Church. After being honorably discharged in 1945 he enrolled at the University of Oklahoma for Petroleum Engineering. Although he never graduated, he stayed in the oil business for many years. When the oil business went bust, Mr. Duke changed careers and became an electrical contractor in Ada with Jerry Elliott until his retirement. Mr. Duke was married Blanche Shipman (also from Okemah) for 48 years until her death. He was then married to Wanda Sites for five years. She died two years ago. Tommy grew up in Ada and graduated from Ada High School, where he was known for being very handsome and well dressed, famously known as “Zoot” because of his “Zoot Suit.” Tommy served 2 years in the Army as a Staff Sergeant in Japan after World War II. Following his military service he entered Oklahoma City University and graduated with a law degree, although he never practiced law. He became a trader for brokerage firms for a number of years, and was co-owner of Stone Summers where he became the largest “penny stock” trader in the United States. During this time and afterwards he pursued his passion for collecting art and made many friends and colleagues in the art world. Mr. Burris died Monday, Nov. 22, 2010. He was born Dec. 12, 1938, in Tupelo to Mose Burris and Willie Docie Stick Burris. After graduating from Tupelo High School in 1956, Mr. Burris joined the U.S. Army and served for three and one-half years in the 101st airborne during the Korean Conflict. He returned to Oklahoma and settled in the Oklahoma City metro area. In 1968, he moved to Newcastle. Mr. Burris worked many years before retiring from MPI. He own a mechanic and paint and body shop. He helped start the Newcastle little league program and Tri City Cruisers Car Club. He served as a Chickasaw Legislator and held other numerous positions within the Chickasaw Nation. While living in Newcastle he was a member of the Woodland Hills Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mose and Willie Burris; a daughter, Trina Jenkins; four sisters, Doris Grace, Neather Mozella, Mary Francis and Sebena Charlotte; a niece, Patricia Kay; and three infant siblings. Mr. Bennett graduated from Holdenville Public Schools in 1949 in Holdenville. He served in the 45th Division of the United States Army in Japan and the Korean War from 1950 to 1952, and continued to serve until 1962. He was a Bronze Star recipient. He graduated from East Central University in Ada in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science Degree and graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in Norman in 1958 with his Juris Doctorate. He was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association that same year and practiced law from 1958 through 2008. He was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, United States Court of Appeals, 10th Circuit, United States District Court, Eastern and Western Districts of Oklahoma. He was instrumental in the organization of Attorney’s Mutual Insurance Company with the vice president and members of the Oklahoma Bar Association. He held several Bar Association Offices; President, Pontotoc County Bar Association; the Board of Governors of Oklahoma Bar Association; Vice-President, Oklahoma Bar Association; Chair, Probate Code Committee, Oklahoma Bar Association; member of the American Bar Association; Fellow American College of Trust and Estate Counsel; Fellow Oklahoma Bar Foundation and American Bar Foundation; and a member of the Oklahoma Health Lawyers Association. He was appointed by United States Senator David Boren to the Judicial Selection Committee for Federal Judges in Oklahoma. He also received the Joe Stamper Distinguished Service Award from the Oklahoma Bar Association in 2008. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ada.
