Sondra served in a variety of roles for many campus organizations and events during the tenure of her husband Bill as president at East Central State University in Ada, OK, and at Redlands Community College in El Reno, OK. Until her recent move to Oklahoma City, Sondra had been an active member of First Baptist Church, Ada, OK where she taught Sunday School for 22 years. She was the church pianist and Sunday School teacher at Amity Baptist Church in El Reno, OK for many years. Sondra’s life was characterized by her servant’s heart. She was a “mom” to many kids as she served for years as a Den Mother in Cub Scouts and for others that showed up on her front porch or at her kitchen table and needed love and guidance. She served at the local school and state levels of Parents Teachers Association. She founded the Joy Store in El Reno, a non-profit endeavor to assist underprivileged families during Christmas. She was appointed by Governor George Nigh to fill a vacated term as County Commissioner of District 1 in Canadian County, Oklahoma, and was elected to serve another full term in this role. She hosted her own radio talk show while living in El Reno. She was instrumental in the development of the Youth and Family Services in El Reno, serving as the president of their Board of Directors for several terms. She loved working and serving in her church, and in areas that helped children and benefited her community, but paramount in her life was her family. She raised five sons who all graduated college with Bachelor’s and post graduate degrees. However, her greatest joy in life was the love of her life of 53 years, her husband Dr. Bill Cole, who preceded her in death in 2010. She was born July 26, 1938, in Shawnee to William (Bill) Rochelle and Ruth Eleanor Thompson Auten. She attended schools in Francis, Miami, Shawnee and Stonewall and graduated from Stonewall High School in 1956. She graduated from East Central University in January 1960 with a degree in business and a minor in English. She married Joe Winton on May 28, 1959. Mrs. Winton taught language arts from 1960-1962 at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf. She was the secretary of the Deaf Teacher’s Association at that time. She taught business classes, computer and English at Sasakwa High School from September 1975-1995. She served as president, vice-president and secretary for the Sasakwa Teacher’s Association; was a member of the Oklahoma Education Association and the National Education Association for 25 years. She became a Christian in 1953 and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Memorial services in his hometown of Ada to be announced in spring 2012. Mr Dittemore died in Houston, Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, after a battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 23, 1933, in Ada to Percy and Thelma (Bowe) Dittemore. He graduated high school in Ada and attended East Central University prior to joining the United States Army in 1956. He spent his service time in Germany. He was an active member of Westbury Baptist Church in Houston. Before active duty in the service, he married Barbara (Pace) Feb. 25, 1956. They had three children: Rick, Katerina and David. He worked in the petroleum industry before beginning his sales career. He became a top producing salesman representing audio, communications, security and clothing manufacturers. He was also an entrepreneur, serving as president of DP Enterprises, and Alpha Omega Communications. He is preceded in death by his parents, Percy and Thelma Dittemore; two sisters, Dortha Perkins and Beatrice Brown and brother, Leo. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, son Ricky and wife Rebecca of Houston; daughter, Katerina and husband Norman Rice, of Austin, and son David. Steve Wall and the Rev. Bill Leverage officiating. Edwina “Harjo” Heminger was born March 13, 1936, on the Pine Ridge Dakota Reservation in Pine Ridge, South Dakota to Lavra (Hiller) Heminger and Edward Heminger. She died in Shawnee due to health issues. Her education includes grade school near Sisseton, South Dakota; high school in the North Phoenix High School, Phoenix, Ariz. She received an associate degree in nursing from Murray State College, Tishomingo. She then received a baccalaureate degree in nursing from East Central University in Ada in May 1980. She worked for the U.S. government in Indian Health Services as a registered nurse for 23 years. She also worked as a nurse consultant for the McCalls Chapel School in Ada, working with the handicapped and developmentally delayed children. She made the deans’s honor roll in college, a writer of poetry, songs and stories. She was active in dancing in pow wow contests. She won the sun dance princess title at the area contests and went on to Sheridan, Wyo. where she became the first runner-up in one of the first Miss Indian American Contest. Ms. Harjo was a member of the Presbyterian Church. In 1972 she was selected to represent Oklahoma at the national Presbyterian Women’s Organization held at Purdue University West Lafayette, Ind. HULING JR. Edward (Ed) E. Huling Jr., born 17 July, 1931 in New Haven CT to Edward E. and Anna M. Huling, died peacefully 3 December, 2011 in San Antonio, TX. He lived in Momauquin, CT, graduated from St. George’s prep school in New Port, RI in 1949, and attended Yale University. After 2 years, Ed left the university to serve his country in the Korean and Viet Nam Wars and joined the USAF aviation cadets at James Connally AFB in Waco TX. Commissioned in 1952, Ed piloted F94Cs and was later trained at James Connally AFB and Mather AFB, CA to become a navigator and radar–bombardier. While stationed at MacDill AFB, FL (June 1960 - May 1962), Ed flew in B-47s. Receiving a scholarship through the USAF Institute of Technology, Ed attended Texas A&M University (1962-1963). He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu engineering honor societies, and received a BS in Electrical Engineering. Ed worked in the USAF Electronic Systems Command from 1963-1968 at Hanscom AFB, MA, Lindsey AFB, Wiesbaden, Germany, San Vito dei Normanni Air Station, Italy, and Kelly AFB, San Antonio, TX. In 1968, Ed returned to flying in the Strategic Air Command where he was a Navigator/Bombardier in B-52s at Osan AFB, Korea, and Wurtsmith AFB, MI. Ed retired at the rank of Major from the USAF in 1974, and was subsequently employed as an electrical engineer by AT&T/Southwestern Bell in San Antonio, TX until he retired in 1990. Ed traveled to 60+ countries, was an Eagle Scout, a member of the Yale University national championship swim team (1949-1951), and was a registered professional (electrical) engineer in TX. Ed married his sweetheart Joan L. Evans in 1952. Together they traveled the world, raised a family, and enjoyed 55 years of marriage. Joan predeceased Ed in 2007. Ed had many hobbies and interests including being a private pilot, scuba diving, water and snow skiing, camping, hockey, tennis, bridge, gardening, and coaching youth sports. Ed is survived by three sons: Edward E, Huling III (Dayton, OH); Wyatt C. Huling (Show Low, AZ); and Scott G. Huling (Ada, OK), nine grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. She received a master’s in education from East Central University. She married Bill Sherbert Feb. 8, 1942. He preceded her in death March 27, 1967. She later married Gale Hedrick Aug. 14, 1976. He preceded her in death on April 15, 1992. Mrs. Hedrick was an English and Spanish Teacher at Ada High School until her retirement. She was a member of Central Church of Christ, a member of the Oklahoma Education Association, Delta Sigma Pi, and the Pontotoc County Retired Teachers Association. Pete's long and distinguished active duty military career stemmed over 27-years beginning during WWII while earning the rank of Master Sergeant (E7) during Korea where he received a battlefield commission to 2nd Lieutenant (commonly referred to as a "Mustang Soldier"); and in Vietnam where he was a Battalion Commander of the largest Single Corps unit in the war followed by his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Signal Corps on 30 June 1971. Mrs. Whitlock was a secretary at East Central University for 10 years and retired from the Oklahoma Department of Transportation after 26 years of service. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Ada and a member of Mature Melody Makers at the church. She served as a judge at art shows, volunteered with Valley View Regional Hospital Auxiliary, served 17 years as a Pontotoc County precinct official, and was a member of Pontotoc County Historical and Genealogical Society. She moved to Elizabethtown from Ada four and half-years ago. Mrs. Whitlock lived at Atria where she served as an Atria Ambassador and sang with the Merry Makers. She attended Northside Baptist Church. Mr. Howard died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was born Nov. 21, 1936, at Mill Creek to Cecil Franklin and Geneva May Burk Howard. He came with his family to this area as a young child. He graduated from Ada High School. He married Jackie McCurdy on Dec. 23, 1987. Mr. Howard was a comptroller for Brockway Glass Company for 32 years. He attended Cornerstone Christian Church and had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. She was born July 22, 1923, in Naples, Italy to Gennaro Varriale and Teresa Grazia Maria Crocono Varriale. She attended school in Italy studying English and German. She served as an interpreter for the U.S. Army in Naples, Italy, from 1943-1945. She continued as an interpreter after World War II for Maj. Bob Crozier in Livorno, Italy. She did undergraduate studies at ECU in 1964. She married Paul Leo Lupinski on Nov. 18, 1948. They lived in Heidelberg, Germany. In June 1956, Bob and Alice Crozier sponsored the Lupinski family to live in Ada, Okla. The Lupinski family became U.S. citizens on Dec. 14, 1961. Mrs. Lupinski was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She was a member of St. Joseph Church Golden Club, the Adult Choir and Mother Teresa Project. Mr. Lupinski died June 22, 1992 in Ada. Survivors include a daughter, Frances Luciana Scott and her husband John Scott of Olympia, Wash.; a son, Rudolph Paul Lupinski of Ada; her grandchildren, Matthew Scott and his wife Sylvia of Norman, Christopher Scott and his wife Janna of Lacey, and John Paul Scott of Olympia, Wash.; a great-grandson, Jacob Scott of Lacey, Okla.; and nephews, Giovanni D’Agnese, Gennaro D’Agnese; niece, Angela Porcaro; and many other nieces and nephews, all of Italy.
