All rights reserved. http://www.usgenweb. org ===================================================================== The Ada News, Ada, OK, Pontotoc County Tuesday, May 1, 2012 FLOYD HENRY SHIPMAN SULPHUR — Services for Floyd Henry Shipman were held 10 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012, at the Crossway First Baptist Church in Sulphur. Rev. Bill Leveridge officiated. Interment followed in Oaklawn Cemetery. Floyd was born January 31, 1923, to George Matthew and Lillian (McMillian) Shipman in Bristow, Okla. He died Wednesday, April 25, 2012, in Norman, Okla., at the age of 89 years, 2 months and 24 days. Floyd enlisted in the United States Army in March 1943 and served 33 months in North Africa and Italy during WWII. He then received an honorable discharge on December 10, 1945. He and Mary Wyna (Nichols) Mitchelmore were married June 10, 1965, in Sulphur. Floyd worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for Sulphur for 22 years before retiring in April 1988. He also worked 12 years in the parts department for Cooper Auto Store and as a roughneck in the oilfield for 30 years. Floyd was an artist working in oils, acrylics and watercolors. He was a member of the Artists of the Arbuckles since 1980 where he served as president and parliamentarian. He was a 63-year member of the Masonic Lodge serving as Master six times and received his 50 years pin in 1999. Floyd loved his family, church and art, and was very proud to be a Chickasaw Tribal Elder. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, on July 27, 2007; parents; brothers, G.W. and Harold Shipman, and granddaughter, Stacie Shipman. Floyd is survived by a daughter, Marilyn McCurtain and husband, Lynn of Sulphur; sons, Larry Shipman and wife, Donna, of Blanchard and Garry Mitchelmore and wife, Mary Beth, of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters: Maxine Johnson of Moore, Okla., and Sandra Stalcup of Clovis, New Mexico; seven grandchildren: Heather Teague, Grant Mitchelmore, Kristen Laney, Dillon Shipman, Mercy Szalaj, Kemper Shrader and Kempy Shrader; and 6 great grandchildren. He married Janie Bacon on June 3, 1962, in Pensecola, Okla. Mr. Morrow moved to Roff in 1984. He worked as a carpenter most of his life and was affiliated with the Assembly of God in Disney, Okla. She attended Willard grade school and graduated from Ada High School. She attended East Central for one year. She married Virgil Ray Howard on July 4, 1935, in Wewoka. He died Oct. 12, 1989, in Ada. Mrs. Howard was a sales clerk for Scott’s Department Store, Stevens and S & Q Clothiers for many years. She was the last original member of Southwest Church of Christ. Rick was born September 21, 1954, in Ada, to Jimmy and Nancy Rutherford. Rick married Zenda Speir on March 15, 1975, and after a short time moved to Roland where they have lived for some 37 years. They have one child, Casie Jo, and two grandchildren, twins Camryn and Cambrey Jo. Rick was employed by FedEx Freight Company for 20 years and was an active member of The Bod.TV Church of Roland. He was involved in several mission ministries including the Back Pack Program and whatever mission his grandson Camryn’s heart lead them into. He was also an expert story teller who would keep our family entertained with witty one-liners full of wisdom laced with humor from the lives of men he had admired and respected throughout his life. Many of them were friends from his team roping days where he was a great friend, teacher and mentor to so many men and boys. Loved ones who left this life before him were father, Jimmy Rutherford, and sister, Twyla Rutherford. Those he left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Zenda Rutherford, of the home; mother, Nancy Rutherford of Noble, Okla.; daughter, Casie Jo Hull; grandson, Camryn Lee Hull, and granddaughter, Cambrey Jo Hull, all of Roland. Johnny was the son of Perry W. Epley, Sr. and Maxine (Wallace) Epley, born on November 21, 1946, in Grayling, Mich. He was brought up in Oklahoma in the Ada area. He joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and served seven years, including five tours in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged in 1970 and went to work in construction as a welder. He married Kathryn Marie ‘Kate’ Hudson in Michigan on December 29, 1972. They lived for a while in Michigan, Arizona, Texas and Oklahoma, then settled in Mississippi for 16 years. After the ordeal of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, they returned to Oklahoma and have made their home in Sasakwa for the past seven years. Johnny loved fishing and camping, gardening and woodworking. He enjoyed working with his hands and stayed busy working on something all the time. He is preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Maxine Epley. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Kathryn, of the home; three sons: Michael Epley of Galveston, Texas; Johnathan Epley of Sasakwa, and Charles Epley of Biloxi, Miss.; four daughters: Terri Fulton of Okmulgee, Janessa Michalk of Atoka; Jessica Garland of Roff, and Kelly Ferrill of Saucier, Miss.; 16 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Perry and Sarah Epley of Sasakwa, and one sister and brother-in-law, L. He was born April 17, 1928, in Loco, Okla., to L.R. and Dovie Spurgin. He graduated from Alma High School in 1941. After a time at Murray State College, where he was a member of the MSC football team, he entered the U.S. Army. A Bronze Star recipient, he served as an armored gun-car commander in the 86th Calvary Reconnaissance Troop, Mechanized , in the European and Pacific Theaters. He and Cleo Dunn were married June 29, 1945. Together they raised four children and lived in the Velma area for more than 60 years. He was a member of Countryside Free Will Baptist Church in Velma where he served on the deacon board and taught senior Sunday school for many years. Over the years he mentored many novice pastors and young deacons as they began their service to the church. His service to others included serving on the organizing board of Velma Water District. In 1944, he retired from Cigna Energy as production superintendent. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Delpha Ward. He married Linda Barrett Walker. They were married for 34 years. Mr. Wood was a Captain in the U. S. Army. He later enlisted in the Navy as Petty Officer First Class achieving the rank of Commander and continued in the Navy Reserve. He graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Chemical Engineering with a Master’s degree in Sanitary Engineering. Following graduation he worked for the Arkansas Pollution Control Commission in Little Rock, Ark., for 16 years with the last 11 years as director where he received a citation from the Arkansas Legislature for his work in water pollution control. In January 1967, he accepted a position at the Robert S. Kerr Water Research Lab as Chief of Technical Services where he remained until his retirement as Deputy Director in 1987. Mr. Wood was a Razorback fan, a member of the Water Pollution and Control Federation, a registered professional engineer and served as an adjunct professor at the University of Arkansas and East Central University. COL. JAMES ORAL CRANFORD ORLANDO, FL — Lt. Col. James Oral Cranford, USMC (Ret.) age 79, of Orlando,Florida passed away after a short but courageous fight with lung cancer on Friday, April 27, 2012. Lt.Col. Cranford was born on April 1, 1933 in Allen, Oklahoma to Bertie O. and Eunice Means Cranford. James graduated from Ada High School, Class of 1951. He was named to the All-State Baseball Team. He graduated from then East Central State College in Ada with a B.S. of Science in Education, in 1955. He was a three-sport letterman and received the Most Outstanding Athlete Award for 1954-55. He married Glenna Shepard of Okemah, Oklahoma, whom he met at East Central. Lt. Col. Cranford was the 2003 Milam Award recipient and an ardent supporter of the ECU athletic community. Upon his graduation, James Cranford was commissioned into the United States Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant, serving as an Artillery Officer. He served two tours of duty in Viet Nam. His military awards include the Bronze Star with Combat “V”, the Meritorious Service Metal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, and the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V”. Among his various assignments, he was the Commanding Officer of Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 11th Marine Regiment from 1965 to 1966 which took him to his first of two tours in Vietnam. Upon his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1980 his family moved to Orlando, FL and Lt. Col. Cranford started the Marine Corps JROTC unit at Edgewater High School, in Orlando where he was the Senior Military Instructor there for 24 years. Lt. Col Cranford was a volunteer at Florida Hospital, working with the Cardio Vascular Intensive Care Unit. James was a member of the M.O.A.A., the V.F.W., the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, the American Legion and the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. He was both and ECU Tiger Fan and a Florida Gator Fan. He worked tirelessly on the Charlie Battery Reunions held every two years. He is still known to his Marines from the unit as “Skipper.” He is preceded in death by his parents Bertie and Eunice Cranford, brothers Jack Cranford and Buford Cranford, and by his beloved wife Glenna Shepard Cranford. Curtis was born on February 22, 1937, in Marlow, Okla., to Dallva Chester Lemons and Bonnie Marie (Rhone) Lemons. He married Linda Watkins on December 12, 1956, in Independence, Mo., and he was a member of the Church of Christ in Asher. Curtis graduated with a bachelor of science degree in Aerospace Engineering, and he worked as Project Engineer for the Nuclear Test Site in Las Vegas, Nevada. He retired as Captain with the Air Force. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Linda (Watkins) Lemons of the home; his mother, Bonnie Lemons of Tecumseh; two sons, Brian Lemons of Las Vegas, Nev., and Christopher Lemons of Asher; one daughter, Laurie Thomas of Las Vegas; four sisters, Eva Stolz of Norman, Okla., Laqueta Barstow of St. Louis, Mo., Bonita Ball of Denver, Colo., and Renee Adams of Little Rock, Ark. Tim Kowalski officiating. Mr. Earsom, a retired vocal music teacher and minister of the gospel, died Monday, May 21, 2012. He was born Aug. 31, 1920, in Golden City, Mo., to the Rev. Charles A. and Jessie Mildred Wasson Earsom. He married Jewel Deane Staggers of Lamont, Okla., on Aug. 17, 1948. Mr. Earsom graduated from Phillips University in Enid in 1943 with degrees in music, science and religion. He played in the band and served as student director of the concert choir. He graduated with his MA from Phillips Theological Seminary in 1947. While attending college, Mr. Earsom preached in a number of churches, including Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) in Waynoka, Carrier, Orlando, and Cherokee. He taught in the public schools of Waynoka, Carrier, Lamont, Fox, Velma-Alma, Norman and Sulphur. In the summers he sang in vocal groups, and conducted and performed in instrumental ensembles with the St. Louis Municipal Opera Company, and the Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony, Eureka Springs, Ark. Mr. Earsom also served as full-time or interim pastor of churches in Sulphur, Tishomingo, Pauls Valley, Ardmore, Duncan, Ada, Healdton, Weleetka, Wetumka, and Lindsay. From 1966 until 1987 he served as a seasonal ranger for the National Park Service at Platt National Park and Lake of the Arbuckles which became Chickasaw National Recreation Area. He volunteered and served as an officer in the Arbuckle Historical Society of Sulphur, for more than 40 years. He co-authored and published one book about Murray County history and was working on his second. He was a former member of the Lions Club. In his retirement years, following 40 years in the public schools of Oklahoma, he was active in the Oklahoma Retired Educators Association of Murray County. He served in the Air Force teaching instrumental flying from 1942-1946. While in the Air Force, he met Marian Nelson and married her July 4, 1943. Mr. Allen attended East Central University and graduated in 1949 and moved to Seminole to teach and coach tennis. He coached there from 1949 – 1966. The first state tennis tournament began in 1958 and his boys won state championships from 1958 – 1966. He then moved to Midwest City in 1966 and started a tennis program at Midwest City High School. Mr. Allen ran youth tennis camps every summer until retiring in 1981. He had several state doubles and singles champions during that time. In 1976 he was voted “Tennis Coach of the Year” for District 5 in Midwest City. He was USTA Missouri Valley Section Oklahoma District Hall of Fame Inductee in 2002. Graydon, the youngest of nine, was born to Ina and Ben Flippo. He spent his early years in Maysville, where he attended local schools. Graydon also had many fond memories of playing golf with countless friends and played up until the age of 81, having fallen a few strokes short on a handful of occasions of shooting his age during a round of golf. Graydon joined the United States Army in 1951, then received an honorable discharge as a sergeant first class. Originally commissioned for a tour of duty in Korea during World War II, Graydon’s commanding officer, who also just happened to be the unit basketball coach, decided to keep Graydon in Arlington, Va., where Graydon’s fortunes (and basketball talent) kept him stateside. Following his service to his country, Graydon attended East Central State College in Ada, Okla., where he received his undergraduate and master’s degree in education. Graydon took his first teaching position in El Paso, Texas, and also had a teaching position in Norman, Okla., before moving to Bakersfield, Calif., in 1965, where he taught sixth grade at Millie Munsey Elementary and also junior high at Curran Jr. High. DEAN COOPER ADA — Services for Wilma Dean Cleghorn Cooper, 85, of Ada, are 2 p.m. Thursday at Morris Memorial Baptist Church; the Rev. Gary Jamar will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Cooper died Tuesday, May 29, 2012, at a local hospital. She was born April 8, 1927, near Ada to M. F. and Mary Effie Whitaker Cleghorn. She attended Latta schools and graduated from Latta High School. She received a bachelor’s degree from East Central University and also received a Master’s in Education from East Central University. She married Elbern Kenneth Cooper Sept. 28, 1945. He preceded her in death March 18, 2010. Mrs. Cooper taught first grade at Latta School, retiring in 1992 after 20 years of service. She was a longtime member of Morris Memorial Baptist Church and a member of the Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include a daughter, Rebecca (Becky) Myers and her husband Tommy of Ada; a son, Kenneth (Ken) Cooper and wife Barbara of Nacogdoches, Texas; four grandchildren, Amanda Hightower and husband Carl, Lauren Bucy and husband Jayson, Samantha Wilbanks and husband Coby and Damon Eisler and wife Sarah; three great grandchildren, KerVon James, Ashlyn Bucy and Cooper Wilbanks. Hospital in OKC, following a lengthy illness. Bill was born May 12, 1956 to Carol Louise and Bobby Joe Davis. He graduated from Ada High School and went on to attend East Central University. During his time at ECU he was a member of the ROTC Rifle Corp and was a Pike (Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity member.) After graduating college he joined the US Army where he attained the rank of Captain & was a Field Artillery Officer. He completed the Advanced Officers Course & Paratrooper Training. After his honorable discharge in 1982 Bill worked for the Little Axe School system as a Math and Computer Science Teacher. He was also a Curriculum Editor for American Education Corporation, an educational software company. At the time of his death he was substituting for Norman Public Schools. Bill was a martial artist in Tai Chi Chuan, White Sash 3rd degree & an instructor; he loved Celtic music, military history, Chinese martial art history. Bill was an avid reader who enjoyed studying the Bible & books about the Bible, any works by C. S. Lewis, Tolkien, Science Fiction & the classics. His other hobbies included guns, woodworking, camping, playing pool & traveling with Mikki. Bill was an active member of First Baptist Church Moore working with the Singles Ministry. Bill loved all of his family & was especially proud to be a grandpa. His hope & dream was that all his family would come to a personal intimate relationship with Jesus Christ & that they would live to glorify Him. Bill was preceded in death by his father.
