Criswell Funeral Home, Ada ================================================================================================================ The Ada News, Ada, OK, Pontotoc County Sunday, July 8, 2012 FLOYD UNDERHILL SR. STONEWALL — Floyd Keith Underhill Sr. died on 7-05-2012 at the age of 89 years, 10 months, and 10 days. He was born on 8-25-1922 at his parent’s home in Johnston County, Oklahoma. It was programmed into his DNA that he would become a cowboy, rodeo performer and rancher. His father, Henry Keith Underhill, was a steer roper and rancher and staged the first steer roping contest in southern Oklahoma at Bromide in 1908.He raised quarter horses under the “Circle Dot” brand from the famous herd of Jim Minx in New Mexico. His horses were prized by cowboys in the rodeo circuit. After graduating from High School in Pontotoc, Oklahoma, Floyd lived with his sister and brother-in-law, Juanita and Dick Truitt, from Stonewall for a time and traveled with them on the Rodeo circuit. Dick was the 1939 World Champion Steer Roper. They also traveled some with Dick’s sister from Stonewall, Nell Shaw, and her husband, Everett Shaw, who was a six time World Champion Steer Roper between 1945 and 1962. Floyd’s first remembrance of calf roping in a rodeo was in 1934 when he entered a rodeo produced by Pete Woods. At the first Ada Fireman’s Rodeo in 1935, Floyd had a horse named Crosby, trained for him by Dick Truitt, on which he could rope without a bridle and was paid $5.00 per performance to do the act. In 1939, he accompanied the Truitt’s to Madison Square Garden where they “rodeoed” every day for a month. Madison Square Garden and other eastern rodeos were soon taken over by Gene Autry’s Flying “A” Rodeo Production Company. Floyd joined that organization for a 6 week tour. The entire production crew and animals traveled by train. After leaving Ravia, Oklahoma, they traveled to Washington, D.C., Cleveland, Ohio, Providence, Rhode Island, Chicago, Illinois, and then New York. Floyd suffered an injury leading two horses down a concrete ramp at Madison Square Garden, when they slipped and fell on him, thus ending his rodeo career. After his rodeo days, Floyd worked in construction laying pipeline in California before settling down in Ada, He co-founded the Ada Floral Shop with his first wife, Jean. He later married and spent 62 years with the love of his life, Norma, in Stonewall, where he raised Brahmas and feeder cattle before he retired. Smith-Phillips Funeral Home, Ada ================================================================================================================ The Ada News, Ada, OK, Pontotoc County Tuesday, July 17, 2012 CARNEY GENE ANGLIN Carney Gene Anglin was my friend. He passed away this past week. We were best friends from the time we were 8 years old until we took different roads at around age 15. A bond was formed between us then that I have never forgotten. He taught me how to hunt, fish and survive in the woods and is still the only man (I say man because he was forced by life’s circumstances to become a man much too early) that I ever saw skin and eat an armadillo just to see what it was like. I don’t think there was anything he wouldn’t try, at least once. He took me to my first all night singing at the High Hill Indian Baptist Church where I had my first taste of Pashofa. He took me to my first snooker parlor. We hitched a ride with older boys when we were supposed to be at the singing. At nine years old we became blood brothers, literally. Next to my own brother, there is no one I would trust more, even to the day he died, to help me out if I was in a fix. I wish we could have climbed Lovelady Mountain one more time. He loved his family and his friends. I am proud to have been one. My heartfelt condolences go out to all of you who were fortunate to be counted amongst them.
