TUPELO — Services for Robert “Bob” Edmond Johnston Sr., 87, Tupelo, are 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at Rocky Point Missionary Baptist Church, Lula. Officiating is the Rev. Steve Henry. Burial follows at Lula Cemetery. Mr. Johnston died Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at Coalgate. He was born Wednesday, March 31, 1926, to Ben and Edna L. (Cross) Johnston at Lula. He attended school at Lula Rocky Point where he graduated in 1943. He was a warehouseman in shipping and receiving for Prestalite Battery Company in Oklahoma City where he retired in 1982. Mr. Johnston served in the Navy in the dental corps in World War II. He married Allie Imogene Hicks Oct. 21, 1945, in Merced, Calif. She died June 7, 2005. Mr. Johnston attended church at Rocky Point Missionary Baptist Church. He was a member of First United Methodist of Coalgate. He was president of his UAW Local Union in Oklahoma City. Survivors include three sons, Gary V. Johnston and wife Sammie of Oklahoma City, Johnny B. Johnston and wife JoAnn of Hutchinson, Kan., and Steven A. Johnston of Oklahoma City; a daughter, Anita Katherine Burrows and husband Johnny of Lula; grandsons, Clint V. Johnston of Edmond, and Paul R. Johnston of Hutchinson, Kan.; granddaughters, Rachell R. ADA — Services for David Don “Peep” Jackson Sr., 75, Ada, are 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Steve Gardner officiating. Burial follows at New Bethel Cemetery in Byng. The Chickasaw Honor Guard is conducting military honors at the cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives from 6-8 p.m Sunday at Criswell Funeral Home. Mr. Jackson died Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, at an Ada hospital. He was born Sept. 28, 1938, in Ada, the youngest of 12 children born to Eddie Martin and Daisy Mae Bass Jackson. He attended Jones Chapel Grade School and both Horace Mann School and Latta schools. At age 17, Mr. Jackson joined the U.S. Navy, serving 20 years and retiring in 1974. After retirement from the Navy, Mr. Jackson and his wife owned several trucks which were leased to Melton Truck Lines, driving cross country as a team for eight years and earning a “Top 10"-inch belt buckle. After coming off the road, he returned to Ada to work 10 years for Call A Ride Public Transit, winning the Public Transit Rodeo for three consecutive years. Mr. Jackson was an active volunteer at his church and community. He and his wife volunteered for many children’s causes. They were known as “Bubbles” and "'Bang-Bang” the clowns and Mr./Mrs. Santa Claus. Mr. Jackson was a cast members of “The Great Passion Play” in Eureka Springs, Ark., for seven seasons. The winter seasons were spent driving a tour bus out of Rockport, Texas. He was also a member of New Bethel Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Jo Helen “Jodi” Jackson; one daughter, Donna Jackson Rodebush, Ada; two sons and daughters-in-law, David D. She married Dillon Raymond “Chock” Clifford in 1933 in Stonewall. He died Aug. 12, 1981. During World War II, Mrs. Clifford was a welder. Later, she was a seamstress at the Wrangler Plant and had worked in housekeeping at Valley View Regional Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of Rocky Point Missionary Baptist Church and a former member of the Lula Home Demonstration Club. Mrs. Duncan died Nov. 3, 2013, at Ennis, Texas. Lois Watson Holmes Duncan was born Oct. 8, 1913, in Ada to Albert Thomas Watson and Ethel Riddle Watson. Mrs. Duncan attended school in Ada and earned her bachelor and master degrees at East Central University. She taught elementary and vocal music 23 years. The last 16 years were at Washington Elementary School in Ada. She worked as a childhood guidance counselor for the state of Oklahoma the last 10 years of her working career. Lois Watson married Joe Wesley Holmes in 1936. He died in 1990. In 1999, Lois married Elmer Duncan who died in 2007. Also preceding her in death were her sister Doris McCoy and her brothers Glenn Watson, Lewis Watson, Al Watson and Kenneth Watson. Her son, Ronald Holmes, died in 2012. She was born Sept. 16, 1926, in Lockport, La., to Frank Kirby Cole and Bessie Leonard Higginbotham Cole. Mrs. Morris was raised in various Texas towns from Longview to Mexia and many places in between, as her father traveled around the state working contract jobs in the early Texas oil fields. After attending Texas Women’s University, she later moved to Oklahoma, where she lived the majority of her adult life, first in Ada, then in Pauls Valley. She was a volunteer library coordinator at Donahue Senior Apartments. Survivors include her four children, Ben Morris, Bruce Morris, Margee Ratliff and Brown Morris; two nieces and one nephew, Melanie Cole, Margaret Rabito and Steve Daughdrill; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She attended Rosedale schools and graduated from Rosedale High School in May 1950. While in high school, she was active in basketball and softball. She married E.J. "Buddy" Moore on Nov. 24, 1950, in Olathe, Kan. They had five children and lived in the Purcell, Rosedale and Wayne areas as Buddy worked on pipelines. She married Robert Avery on April 5, 1978, in Miami, Okla. They lived at Wayne until Robert took a job with The Grand River Dam Authority at Salina. In 2007, they moved to Ada to be near family. She attended Glenwood grade school and Ada Junior High School and graduated from Latta High School in 1936. She graduated from beauty college in Ada in 1938. She married Woodrow Wilson Scott on July 25, 1936, in Ada. They were married for 46 years when Mr. Scott died on July 18, 1982. Mrs. Scott worked for TG & Y stores as their fabric buyer and was also a seamstress for the public. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the PEO, Philanthropic Educational Organization, since 1996, belonging to Chapter Y of Parker, Colo., and then to Chapters GJ and HA of Ada. She served as chaplain and guard in her 17 years of membership. Mrs. Scott was awarded the “Miss June Bug Princess” of Ada in 2004, and she was an elder of the Chickasaw Nation. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ruth Barnes and her husband, Mike, of Fitzhugh; two grandsons, Selby Barnes of Ada and Wiley Barnes and his wife, Rachel, of Fitzhugh; a great-granddaughter, Layla Nicole Barnes of Fitzhugh; one niece, Nancy June Mire and her family of New Iberia, La.; a nephew by marriage, Don Scott; and two great-nieces by marriage, Clare Smith and Sue Brendle. He was born Nov. 8, 1934, in Oklahoma City to Robert Hesketh Jaques and Eula Hester Shelton Jaques. He attended Willard Elementary school in Ada and graduated from Ada High School in 1952. He then went on to the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science in 1956. Mr. Jaques completed his senior year of undergraduate school and his first year of law school simultaneously, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Oklahoma Law School in 1958. While at OU, Mr. Jaques was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and was a BMOC. He was also a member of the Air Force ROTC. Following graduation and acceptance by the bar, Mr. Jaques served in the judge advocate general’s office in the United States Air Force from 1958-1960. While in the Air Force, he met Frances Rebecca Ballard, and they were married in Ada on Nov. 18, 1960. She preceded him in death on Oct. 5, 2003. Mr. Jaques practiced law in Ada for 53 years and served on the Oklahoma Board of Bar Examiners for 35 years. He was a co-founder of Pre-Paid Legal. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was called to serve his country again during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged as a lieutenant. She worked with Willie at Watts Cotton Gin and in the farming and cattle operations they owned. Mrs. Watts also worked at the Stratford Post Office for many years and was the assistant postmaster when she retired. After Willie died in 1977, she continued his term on the Garvin County Soil Conservation District Board of Directors and was later elected to continue on the board serving one term as chairman. She was a longtime member of Stratford United Methodist Church. She most recently received a certificate of appreciation from Pauls Valley Beautification for her flower beds at Willows Assisted Living Center. He was born June 12, 1946, in Ada to Edgar and Naomi Triplett Gray. Mr. Gray received his early childhood education at Napier School and graduated from Byng High School in 1964. Following graduation, he served with the U.S. Marines. He retired from the National Guard with the rank of master sergeant in 2003. He married Barbara Ann Watson on Oct. 24, 1969. She died Sept. 9, 2001. As a child, Mr. Gray was a member of Ada Church of God in Christ. Later as an adult, he became a member of Reaper Baptist Church, where he served as an associate minister under the guidance of the Rev. Freddie Clark. Mr. Gray and his wife, Barbara, worked together with the youth department and the music department. Mr. Gray joined Ada Fire Department as a firefighter on Dec. 1, 1969, and was appointed fire chief May 29, 1979. He served the city of Ada in this capacity until he retired Nov. 30, 1990. After his retirement from the Ada Fire Department, Bill ran for a seat on the Ada City Council and also served as mayor. Bill was an entrepreneur over the years, including a restaurant, a second-hand store, wrecker service and Bargain World Television Home Shopping Franchise in Ada and Altus. He was a carpenter and plumber after retiring from public office, and was employed by several assisted living centers in the Oklahoma City area and at a private prison in Holdenville. He married Laurie Rooney Brandt on Oct. 4, 2002, in Lawton. They lived for several years in Lawton before moving to Edmond. After high school, Mr. Bell enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Quail during World War II. He was captured at Corregidor in the Philippines and later transferred to Japan, where he was a prisoner of war. He was interred for a total of 3 1/2 years. Returning to Oklahoma, he married Bettie Margaret Logsdon on July 28, 1946, at First United Methodist Church in Ada. She died Sept. 10, 2010. Both Mr. Bell and his wife were both lifelong educators, teaching in Arizona, New Mexico and Oklahoma. He received a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Oklahoma State University and taught vocational agriculture on the high school and vocational and technical levels. His teams won many Arizona field days and also national championships. At the age of 14, she moved with her parents to the farm northeast of Ada. Mrs. Downs attended Byng High School, graduating in 1944. She married Booth Downs on Dec. 7, 1946, in Ada. He died Nov. 20, 2008. They were married for 62 years. During her working career, Grace was employed with Ada Auto Supply, Bowie Ballard Ford, Kay’s Fashions, Holiday Inn and McCortney Drug. She was a member of the Fittstown First Baptist Church. Survivors include her sisters, Lorene Anderson, Broken Arrow, and Leatrice Bouse and her husband, Fred, of College Station, Texas; a brother, James Veach, Del City; numerous nephews; one niece; many great-nieces and -nephews; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, four brothers, five sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law.
