Swearingen Funeral Home, Konawa ================================================================================================================ The Ada News, Ada, OK, Pontotoc County Wednesday, April 10, 2013 ***PAID OBITUARY*** LETITIA ARMSTRONG ADA — Letitia (“Tisha”) Armstrong, 63 years old, of Ada, Oklahoma, died peacefully at home after a short illness on the evening of Wednesday, April 3, in the loving company of her mother and brother. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 12 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 17th and South Broadway in Ada, Oklahoma. Tisha was born on January 10, 1950 in Ada, Oklahoma. She went to Mrs. Mackin’s Kindergarten, where she first displayed her great talent in sketching, drawing, painting and other forms of art. She attended Willard and Washington Elementary Schools. As a child, Tisha was part of the famous “17th Street Neighborhood Gang” in Ada, who were barefoot all summer long and spent the long days and warm nights having water fights, playing chalk chase, stepping on June bugs, raising baby raccoons, catching fireflies and running wild. She attended Ada Junior High and Ada High School, from which she graduated in 1968. She attended the University of Oklahoma, majoring in art and philosophy, and graduated in the early 1970’s. While at OU, she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi (“Pi Phi”) sorority, where she made many lifelong friends. She received a Masters in Business Administration from Tulsa University in 1975 and became licensed as a Certified Public Accountant. Then she started her 40-year professional career as an accountant specializing in income tax. She was married in 1973, and lived with her husband in Norman until they divorced in 1980. She worked in Washington, D.C. for two years, Los Angeles for several years, and then found a new home in her beloved San Francisco, near where her brothers live. She developed a great love for the city’s opera, symphony, theater and art museums, and lived in the historic North Beach and Theater District neighborhoods. Tisha was an intrepid and fearless world traveler. Every summer she took several weeks, or sometimes several months, to travel Europe, with the time to really explore the various places she had dreamed of exploring. Her first trip was a month in Italy, traveling by train, which allowed her to stop at the remote villages along the way, on her way to the larger, world-famous cities. Rome became her favorite. Her days there were spent sketching and drawing the monuments and architecture she had only seen in books, and visiting all of the great museums. Later, she spent time living in Berlin, studying the German language and culture. Her enthusiasm for new places and new people was never-ending. A few years ago, she returned to Oklahoma, living in Norman and working as an international accountant in Oklahoma City. She was very happy to be back in Oklahoma, and returning to Oklahoma allowed her to spend time with her mother, who lives in Ada. She returned to live in Ada in November 2012. She was a lifelong member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and she supported their charitable operation, the Matthew 25 foundation. She had a loud, frequent and infectious laugh, and was always up for spontaneous artistic expression, whether it was acting out Shakespeare plays in Washington Square Park in North Beach in San Francisco or playing and singing electric rock and roll music with the Busbys, her childhood friends, at the Busbys’ Cabin near Ada, all night long until the sun came up. Her father, James L. (“Jim”) Armstrong, of the home, passed away at age 89 in January 2011. She is survived by her mother, Tish Armstrong, of the home, her brother James L. Armstrong, Jr., of Oakland, California, and her brother, Richard Haney (“Haney”) Armstrong, of San Francisco, California, his wife, Caroline Armstrong, and their children, Cole and Claire Armstrong. If friends wish to, they can make donations in Tisha’s memory to the Matthew 25 charity of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Ada. Obituaries may be viewed and online condolences sent to criswellfh.com. Criswell Funeral Home, Ada ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Ada News, Ada, OK, Pontotoc County Wednesday, April 24, 2013 ***PAID OBITUARY SHIRLEY MAE PELTON ADA — Shirley Mae Pelton was born on August 19, 1955 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. She passed from this life on April 14, 2013 in Ada, Oklahoma. A memorial service will be held on Saturday April 27th at 10:00 AM at Covenant Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 15791 State Highway 1W, Latta, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents Eron and Eschol Pelton. She is survived by her roommates, her caregivers with All About You, many friends and her guardian. Shirley spent most of her life in the Southern Oklahoma Resource Center Pauls Valley, but in 2007 she moved into her own home in the community. She loved to go on outings with her staff whether grocery shopping, to the park, agency events or just to ride around on a warm sunny day. She enjoyed any activity that involved music whether that was watching “Anne,” listening to country music or singing her favorite songs. Shirley touched everyone who had the opportunity to get to know her. She could be ornery and had clear likes and dislikes and, in her own way, made it clear that her opinions mattered. Her absence has left a sore spot in many hearts. We miss her smile and her laugh, clapping hands and singing. We miss hearing “go” and “cookie.” Most of all we just miss Shirley. Memorials may be made to Oklahoma Special Olympics. ================================================================================================================ The Ada News, Ada, OK, Pontotoc County Thursday, April 25, 2013 DELMA MARIE (NICHOLS) CHRISTIAN ALLEN — Services for Allen resident Delma Marie (Nichols) Christian, 75, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Brown’s Funeral Chapel in Coalgate. Interment will follow at Atwood Cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. David Daniel. Family will welcome friends for visitation from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Friday, April 26, 2013 at Smith-Phillips Funeral Home, Ada, Oklahoma. Mrs. Poole passed away Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at a local hospital in Oklahoma City, at the age of 100. Viva was born September 29, 1912 at Beulah, Oklahoma to Homer B. Greene and Lela Gertrude Earnhart Greene. She was the eldest of five children. She attended school at Atwood, graduating in 1930. She worked her way through college, earning her room and board by housekeeping and cooking for Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Morrison, the Dean of Students, at East Central State Teachers College, in Ada. Her long and well-respected teaching career began in 1934 in Fairview (Hughes County,) and later included schools in Jesse, Pleasant Hill (in Coal County,) Olney, and Stonewall. She taught in one-room schoolhouses for many years, usually multiple grades at once. She retired from Stonewall in 1976, after more than 3 decades of teaching. Many former first-graders have written to her and sent holiday greetings over the years-a gesture she always appreciated. She was twice selected “Teacher of the Year.” Viva married James “Clarence” Poole, a high school classmate, on June 14, 1936, in a small ceremony at a home in Allen, Oklahoma. She postponed her teaching career in the early years of their marriage, living in the communities of Round Prairie, Allen, and Burr Valley, where she was a homemaker, a farmer’s wife, and mother to her three small children. After retirement, she traveled with her husband, Clarence. They enjoyed their time with their card-playing friends-a pastime that never grew old to her. They sold their Burr Valley farm and moved to Ada in 1988. After his death, she continued her hospitality, opening her basement to dozens of ladies to come play cards at “The Poole Hall.” She had volunteered and served others in many ways over the years at Valley View Hospital and Ballard’s Nursing Home, even up until just a few years ago. Her perseverance and kindness were an inspiration; she encouraged others, loved everyone, frowned upon gossip, and read her Bible daily. She lived a long, faith-filled life of service to God. She was a charter member of Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, a longtime member of Stonewall Methodist Church, and a current member of First United Methodist Church osf Ada. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; her twin infant daughters Barbara Faye and Beulah Mae Poole; her son James Chesley “Jim” Poole; her infant granddaughter Janet K.Weast; her grandson, Kevin D. Weast; sisters Vera Peck and Eula Garrett; and brothers Earl and Melvin Greene. Surviving are her son Maurice Dale Poole and his wife, Dagmar, of Redlands, California; her daughter Patricia Ann Weast and her husband, Forest, of Midwest City, Oklahoma; her daughter-in-law Neva (Loyd) Poole of Sasche, Texas; her five grandchildren of whom she was so very proud, Eric Poole and wife, Julie; Brooke Poole, Jerry Poole and wife Cheri; Twyala Smith and husband John; and Kimberly Sabella and husband James; and granddaughter-in-law Stephanie Weast-Jordan and husband Daniel. Also surviving are her 11 much loved great grandchildren Dillon, Sean, and Joshua Poole; Anthony, Hannah, and Rachel Sabella; Sayre, Bryer and Schuler Weast; and Claire and Scott Poole; and several nieces and nephews. Special appreciation to her caregivers, friends, neighbors, and church family that have helped her to live more fully during this final winter season of life.
