Burial will follow at Gerty Cemetery. Mrs. Patrick died Saturday, June 29, 2013, at Sterling House in Ada. She was born Aug. 19, 1921 in Burlingame, Kan., to Chris Christesen and Florence Boruff Christesen. She graduated from Peterton grade school, Osage City, Kan., in 1935; Burlingame High School in 1938; Chanute Jr. College in Chanute, Kan., in 1941; and Kansas State College in 1943. She taught school one year at District 110 near Burlingame, Kan. She married Thomas A. (Jack) Colbert of Gerty on March 8, 1944, in Kansas City, Kan. He preceded her in death in September 1995. She later married Henry Patrick Oct. 27, 2003, in Ada. He preceded her in death Oct. 11, 2009. She graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Medical Technology, Kansas City, Mo., in 1944. She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital for six months before joining her husband in the Armed Services stationed at Augusta, Ga. In 1945 she returned to Topeka, Kan., to work for the Kansas State Board of Health Laboratories from 1945 to 1956. She moved to Oklahoma in 1956. She worked in the office of Dr. C. P. Taylor and Dr. E. D. Padberg for 32 years. Mrs. Patrick was a member of Central Church of Christ and a member of the Pontotoc County Family and Community Education Group, serving as county president in 1992 and 1993. She was a volunteer in the Reach to Recovery Program at Valley View Regional Hospital and also an active member of the Chickasaw Senior Citizens program, serving as secretary and treasurer. Survivors include two sisters, Camilla Thompson of Wichita, Kan., and Ruby Fillmore of Osage City, Kan.; two nieces, Cathy Bartlett and Sherrie Atwood, both of Kansas; her adopted family, Don and Jo Sexton, David Battles family, Don Battles family, Jerry Battles family, Doy Battles family and Henry and Patricia Perry. He was born Jan. 17, 1935, to Dave Wall and Alta Norene Reed Hodges at Ada. He lived in the Ada area all of his life. He attended school at Glenwood and Tupelo and was employed at Valley View Regional Hospital in the maintenance department and retired as a maintenance supervisor at Ballard’s Nursing Center. Mr. Hodges was a Baptist and a 32nd Degree Mason. Survivors include two daughters, Diana L. Bolin and husband, J.B., Ada, and Janet D. Ward and husband, Billy, Ada; five grandchildren, Jamie D. She graduated from Horace Mann High School in Ada in 1934. She also attended East Central State Teachers College in Ada. She married William “Bill” Webster Wood Nov. 28, 1962, in Stratford. He preceded her in death April 2, 1993. Mrs. Wood was a clerk at Mac’s Wholesale and also at Keltner’s Grocery and Evans Candy Company. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ada. Mrs. Wofford was a longtime employee of McCall’s Chapel, retiring after 23 years of service. She served as the director for 10 years. She later worked for the Chickasaw Enterprises for five years and also A. J. Transportation for four years. She was a member of College Heights Missionary Baptist Church and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. He died April 17, 1990. TYLER ADA — Nova L. Tyler, of Ada, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2013. She was 71. She was born on May 11, 1942, to Marvin L. and Sallie Seabolt Thompson in Roff. Nova attended Tupelo High School. In 1959, she married Ray Kerr and together they had a daughter, Nancy Kerr. They were married until Ray’s death in 1979. In 1982, she married Johnny E. Tyler. Nova worked as a head start teacher and as a nursing assistant. She was also a wife, mother and homemaker. Preceding Nova in death are her parents, Marvin and Sallie Thompson; her brothers, John Thompson and Jerry Thompson; and her sisters, Bobbie Webb and Louise Hynson. She is survived by her husband, Johnny; children Nancy Kerr of Ada, Karina Carr and husband, Jerry, of Guthrie, Kelly Hooper and husband, Rick, of Ada, Steven Tyler and wife, LeeAnn, of Konawa; her sisters Mary Tully of Ada, Shirley Stonecipher of Centrahoma and Virginia Boulton of Norman; and her brother, Gus Thompson of Ada. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, as well as a host of other friends and family members. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, at Life Community Church of Ada. She joins her husband, sons, parents, and siblings, who preceded her on that journey. Olivia’s progeny include her daughter, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, in Oklahoma, Texas, Oregon, and California. She wished her fond regards extended to her relatives and friends, all of whom she held dear. According to her wishes, Olivia’s cremated remains were interred at the family cemetery in a private ceremony. A memorial celebration of her life to be held in 2014 in Pawhuska, Oklahoma will be announced in a timely manner. Jim Knight officiating. Visitation will be at the church immediately following the service. Graveside service will be 4 p.m. Saturday at Beggs Cemetery in Beggs. Mr. Baxter died Saturday, June 29, 2013, at his daughter’s home in Vancouver, Wash. He was born Jan. 7, 1928, in Okmulgee to Loyd and Sylvia Morton Baxter. He spent his childhood in Tulsa and Okmulgee, graduating from Okmulgee High School in 1946. He won many awards for his athletic ability while in high school. He married Lila Jean Hill on Dec. 5, 1947. They were married for 65 years. Mr. Baxter graduated from Bethany Peniel College (now Southern Nazarene University) in 1954 and was a pastor in El Campo, Texas, for two years. He and Jean made their home in Bethany and Vancouver, Wash., before retiring in 1994. After retirement they moved back to Oklahoma where they lived in Buncombe Creek before moving near their daughter Linda in Stratford in 2000. Survivors include his wife, Jean Baxter, of the home; daughter, Linda Jean Pound and her husband Jack of Stratford; daughter, Sherrie Baxter of Vancouver, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Bryan and wife Carey, Rebecca, Daniel, Michelle, Rachel, Jonathan and Melinda; a sister, Shirley Carter and husband Louis of Fisk, Mo.; brother, Ted Baxter and wife Mary of Tulsa; and sister-in-law, Willette Baxter, Russellville, Ark. She graduated from Central Oklahoma Teachers College and received a master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. She married Guy A. Putnam in February 1942 at Granite City, Ill. He died in 1962 in Gilroy, Calif. She married Henry Dale in 1968 at Livermore, Calif. Mrs. Dale was an elementary teacher for 38 years until her retirement, a Southern Baptist and a member of the Oklahoma and California Professional Teacher’s Associations. She served as a Campfire Girl Leader, 4-H Leader and at Christian youth camps. Survivors include two sons, Dr. A. R. Putnam and his wife, Sigrid H. Putnam, of Pensacola, Fla., and Dr. Richard R. Burial follows at Maxwell Cemetery. Mr. Laxton died Friday, July 5, 2013, at an Oklahoma City hospice. He was born Nov. 30, 1923, at Burr Valley to John and Julie Myers Laxton. He married Christine A. Lorene Massey on Nov. 30, 1946, at Coalgate. She died Aug. 27, 1995. Mr. Laxton was a supervisor for Ideal Cement Plant, known now at Holcim in Ada, until his retirement. He was also a farmer. He was of the Baptist faith and had served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Jan. 13, 1943, until being honorably discharged Feb. 16, 1946. Survivors include three daughters, Karen Sue Laxton Sliger of Barry, Texas, Christine (Tina) Eveline Laxton Wood of Warr Acres, and Janette Lee Laxton Gilpatrick-Jones of Bethel Acres; one sister, Gracie Duty of Stonewall; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was educated by her many life experiences that included farming the bottoms of the North Canadian River valley, traveling the Mother Road and working in wartime industry, surviving depressions and Dust Bowls. She married Johnnie Lynch on Sept. 22, 1935. He died July 3, 1978. Mrs. Lynch worked retail jobs in Ada, including Woolsworth, McClures Bakery and TG & Y from its opening day until her retirement in 1981. She was a longtime active member of Trinity Baptist Church. He married Karrol Ann Northcutt July 14, 1969. She preceded him in death March 23, 2012. Mr. Ensey was a sanitation engineer for the city of Marietta. He had retired from the bottleshop of Brockway Glass Company in Ada. He was born Aug. 6, 1931, at Roff to John Thomas and Lela Moss Ray. He graduated from Vanoss High School and attended East Central University. He joined the U. S. Army, Company D, 46th Armored Infantry Battalion in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. He married Juanita Coffey Dec. 21, 1956, at Ada. She preceded him in death Jan. 26, 1996. Mr. Ray was employed by Evergreen Mills in Ada for 42 years until his retirement. He was also a substitute mail carrier for several years. Mr. Ray was a longtime member of Southwest Church of Christ in Ada where he served in the Prison Ministry and assisted elderly members. Survivors include three daughters, Marilyn Balch and her husband Stanley of Roff, Mary Ray of Edmond, and Brenda Flowers and her husband Darren of Ada; five grandchildren, Wade Balch, John Balch, Breanna Wray, Lauren Flowers, and Caraline Flowers; one great granddaughter, Aisling Balch; two great grandsons, Richter Balch and Grayson Wray; and special friends, Randy and Ann Wilson of Ada. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a half-brother, Dan Ray; and two half-sisters, Mattie Rassier and Ollie Crooks. Mr. Plunk served as mayor and city manager of the city of Allen and had served as an Oklahoma State Representative for District 25 from 1995 until 2007. He served in the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command during the Korean Conflict, being honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. She lived in Patagonia, Ariz., for the past 18 years and volunteered at the senior center, where she made her “special” gravy for holidays and other events. OETA Television executive Bill Thrash died Monday, July 15, 2013, in Oklahoma City. He was born Sept. 25, 1939, in Ada to Guy Harold Thrash and Lucille Loyce Williams Thrash. He is survived by his wife, Billie, of the home, and a sister, Ann Louise Thrash Jones of Pauls Valley. For more than 25 years, Mr. Thrash served OETA as head of programming and production and then station manager. He began his television career in 1955 while still in high school with KTEN, an ABC affiliate in his hometown of Ada. He started as a cameraman and then progressed through many other positions including director, traffic managerpromotion director and program manager until his graduation from East Central University. After a stint in the Army, he then moved to Oklahoma City, where in 1962, he joined the production staff at KOCO-TV and ultimately became program manager. It was during those years in addition to directing and/or producing local Channel 5 shows such as Lunch with Ho Ho, The Ida B Show, the Gomer Jones OU Coaches Show, Nightmare with Count Gregore and many Oklahoma City University music specials, among so many others, that Mr. Thrash also was hired to direct several of the syndicated Bar S Jamboree country music specials. Then he was tapped by Lee Allan Smith to direct for eight years The Stars and Stripes Show, a live from Oklahoma City, star-studded patriotic series of Fourth of July variety specials which aired on NBC, headlined by Bob Hope. During this time, he was also directing the annual Western Heritage Awards at what has now become the Western Heritage Museum. In 1971, he moved to WKY-TV (now KFOR) as assistant program manager and later became station manager. From local programming such as Dannysday, the OCU Christmas Specials produced with Carveth Osterhaus, Bill Banowsky Visits, OU Football Playback and PM Magazine; he also took on outside projects such as The Diamond Jubilee Show, a celebration of Oklahoma’s 75th anniversary as a state, the syndicated music special Hoyt Axton Live!, and over 50 episodes each of the nationally syndicated country music shows Nashville on the Road and Pop! Goes the Country. In 1988 he joined the staff of OETA, the Oklahoma statewide network & PBS affiliate, where his first assignment was to helm the ambitious idea of then-OETA Executive Director and current OETA Foundation President Bob Allen, the five-hour award-winning miniseries Oklahoma Passage. This partnership with OETA and Bob Allen also produced the still-running syndicated series of Lawrence Welk Shows and specials for PBS. Statewide productions included Stateline, Gallery, Oklahoma City Metro, the OETA Movie Club, The Piano Hour, Oklahoma City Weekly, A Conversation With......, Centennial Stories, The Oklahoma Hall of Fame ceremonies and State of Creativity. Once again he collaborated with Lee Allan Smith on such additional projects as The State Capitol Dome Dedication, The Memorial Concert Centennial Project, The Oklahoma Centennial Parade and the Oklahoma Centennial Spectacular. In addition to being the recipient of six Heartland Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Emmy Awards, Mr. Thrash was also honored with induction into both the Heartland Emmy Silver and Gold Circles. Other honors include the Public Television Programmers Association Programmer of the Year Award and many Savvy Scheduler awards, The Lee Allan Smith Oklahoma Legacy Award from the Oklahoma Heritage Association, a Governor’s Arts Award, The Lifetime Achievement Award from the OKC American Women in Radio and Television and in 2002, Bill was inducted into the Oklahoma Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Additionally, Bill was recently honored when both East Central University and OETA dedicated their television studios in his name. As a community, civic and professional leader, Bill has served as past president of Fortune Club, an association of business leaders; The East Central Alumni Association; past president of the East Central Foundation and a board member; The National Television Programming Conference; and past president of the Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma and a board member. He has chaired or served on numerous projects and events committees for many professional, charitable or civic organizations, including “Opening Night,” the Downtown Arts Council of Oklahoma City New Year’s Eve Celebration, The Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce, State Chamber of Commerce, Oklahoma Public Schools Foundation, Oklahoma City Festival of the Arts, Allied Arts, United Way, the advisory committee of the Oklahoma Heritage Association and the Western Heritage Awards Committee of the National Western Heritage and Cowboy Museum. Bill’s other love was music, especially the interpreters of the great American songbook, be it instrumentalists like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Quincy Jones, George Shearing, Marty Paich and the like or vocalists like Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, The Four Freshmen or the new kid; Tierney Sutton, Diana Krall and John Pizzarelli, to name a few. Bill played the piano and for many years worked professionally in small combos and bands after his work day at the television station. Beth was well-known for her vivacious spirit, enthusiasm and sense of humor. She was thoughtful and generous and cared deeply about her friends and family. She delighted in hosting spontaneous parties and dinners and was known for her elegant, fun style of entertaining. She was an accomplished bridge player, enjoyed tennis and was a passionate thoroughbred horse racing fan. She traveled with Gerald throughout Europe and the U.S. and looked forward to her annual visits to Hot Springs, AR for the horse racing season. More recently, her travels involved spending time with her grandchildren, daughter and son-in-law and they had many memorable adventures together. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother and a dear friend to many. Beth is survived by her daughter, Kelly Ebeling, her son-in-law, David Howard, and her grandsons, Clay and Will Howard, who live in Healdsburg, CA. She is also survived by her three brothers and their wives: Sid and Flo Ward of Moore, Steve and Maris Ward of Stillwater, and Terry and Diana Ward of Oklahoma City. Mr. Ballard died Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at his home. He was born Nov. 30, 1920, in Ada to William E. and Flora Jones Ballard. He attended Ada Schools and in 1941 enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Following two years of extensive training, Mr. Ballard was assigned to the 419th Night Fighter Squadron. The next two years he participated in campaigns on Guadacanal, Bougainville, Middleburg and Philippine Islands as a technical inspector and flight chief with the rank of tech/sergeant. He was discharged from the Air Force Nov. 11, 1945. He married Merle Hopper Dec. 22, 1941, in Gulfport, Miss. He was a rancher and also employed with Merle Reed Plumbing Company and Pete Presley Plumbing Company. Mr. Ballard was a director and secretary/treasurer of Ballard Nursing Home Inc. from 1968 to 1985. He was a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church where he was on the official board and a trustee. Mr. Ballard held membership in Ada Round-Up Club and was a charter member of Little Red School House Committee. He also holds a life-time membership in the World War II Nightfighters Organization.
