Criswell Funeral Home, Ada ================================================================================================================ The Ada News, Ada, OK, Pontotoc County Tuesday, September 8, 2015 PARTICK GUSTIN BOCA RATON, Florida — Patrick Brent Gustin left his earthly home and loved ones behind on Thursday, Sept. 3, 2015. He now lives and flies in the blue skies of Heaven. Patrick’s journey began on March 1, 1980, when he was born in Italy; and is the cherished son of Michael Hays Gustin and Cynthia Buehring Gustin. He currently lived in Plantation, Florida, and was a Captain with Reva Air Ambulance Service. He was loved by his co-workers and the company grounded their entire fleet of aircraft in memory and in honor of Patrick. He graduated from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, with a BS in Aeronautical Science. After college, he went on to receive his A&P (Airframe & Power-plant) license, something few pilots do. But first of all, he loved to fly and was an excellent pilot. He got great satisfaction knowing he was helping the sick, injured and sometimes pre-mature babies get to the medical care they needed. He flew all over the world to do this. Before Reva, he flew for Air Flight Charter Service in Fort Lauderdale. He was born in Rimini, Italy, but grew up in Texas. He graduated from Whitney High School in 1998, then moved to Waco, Texas, where he began his path to becoming a pilot. He moved with his parents to Uvalde, Texas, and continued his training there at a local college, then went on to be accepted to Embry-Riddle where he graduated in 2005. Patrick will be forever missed by his parents, Mike and Cindy; his brother and best friend, Sean; and nieces Hannah Lou and Ella Campbell Gustin. They so loved their "crazy" Uncle Patrick. He is also survived by his aunts and uncles: Michele and Terry Ray of Colby, Kansas; Dana and Ray Cox of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; Bunnye and Paul Clark of Longview, Texas; and Walt Buehring of Portland, Oregon. First cousins Krysti Terrell and husband Jeff; Chris Cox and wife Gina; Daniel Cox and wife Jennifer; Jaime Reynolds and husband Greg; Sarah Walters and husband Drew; Rebecca Amicarelli and husband Anthony; Rachael Kluge and husband Blake; Annie Buehring of Katy, Texas; Kurt Buehring of Portland, Oregon; Nancy McKenzie, her son Nathan Bellah, and her husband Bob; and many more second cousins and relatives. And, lastly, he's survived by his great-grandmother, Mary E. Buehring of Longview, Texas. He is preceded in death by his grandmother Lou Gustin Poteet who loved him so dearly; grandfather Gene Gustin; great-grandmother Tommy Lou Hays who he was always able to put a smile on her face; great-grandfather Walter J. Buehring; and cousin Michael Brent Ray, who Patrick was named after, and who was also taken from us far too soon. He loved life and loved his friends and family. He had a razor-sharp wit that could keep everyone around him laughing for hours. He loved to have fun, and loved to race his motorcycle and cars. He had an extensive group of friends in Florida and Texas that all loved to do the same thing and they had many good times together. He will be greatly missed by them all. Patrick especially loved his brother, best friend and buddy, Sean. They built cars and motorcycles together and went many times to local tracks to race and have fun. Their brotherly bond was truly something special. But most of all, he loved to fly. Once while visiting him at Embry-Riddle, his instructor pulled his family aside and told them he was a "natural" and was born to fly. And he proved that in many ways while flying his parents' Cessna 414 in Texas, and later with his jobs in Florida. Captain Patrick Brent Gustin was a pilot. It was not just his occupation, it is who he was. Some people go through life wondering if they ever made an impact on others. Patrick never had this problem. In his short time on Earth as an air ambulance pilot, he had a positive impact on many lives all across the globe. A funeral service in celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. today at Glick Family Funeral Home in Boca Raton, Florida — (561) 672-1880. The family appreciates all the love and support they've received from Patrick's many friends and co-workers. It has truly been a blessing. Donations to a favorite charity in Patrick's memory and honor would be appreciated by the family. Criswell Funeral Home, Ada ================================================================================================================ The Ada News, Ada, OK, Pontotoc County Saturday, September 19, 2015 OVERTON JAMES ADA —Services for Gov. Emeritus Overton James, 90, of Ada are at 2 p.m. Monday at the Chickasaw Community Center. Overton James was born July 21, 1925, in Bromide to Rufus and Vinnie May (Seely) James. He passed peacefully from this life to the next on Sept. 16, 2015, with his daughter, Ranell; granddaughter, Dedra; niece, Dede; and friend Dr. Tina at his side, an example of strength and courage to the end. In 1947, Overton married Evelyn June Richardson, who preceded him in death May 2, 1996. He graduated from Wapanucka High School in 1942 and received his bachelor’s and master’s of teaching degrees from Southeastern State College, Durant. During college, he was a professional and semi-pro baseball player. Overton served in the U.S. Navy “Seabees” in the Southwest Pacific during WWII. He also served in the U.S. Navy Reserve and the Army Reserve from 1947-1957. A teacher and coach for 10 years, he taught at Ravia, Caddo and Shattuck. After serving as sales manager for Compton’s Encyclopedia for five years, he embarked on his career with the Oklahoma Department of Education in 1965. In 1977, Overton resigned his position as state director of Indian Education to become full-time governor of the Chickasaw Nation. Having been appointed Chickasaw Governor by President John F. Kennedy in 1963, Gov. James began what became his lifelong passion—dedicating his life to improving the lives of the Chickasaw people. Under his leadership, the Carl Albert Indian Hospital, which served south-central Oklahoma, was built and dedicated in 1980. Gov. James was instrumental in getting legislation passed by the U.S. government to enable the tribes to elect their governors and chiefs by popular vote. After the passage of the legislation, Overton was the first Chickasaw governor elected since Oklahoma statehood. While he was in office the Chickasaw Tribe won the Arkansas Riverbed case, which proved tribal ownership of the Arkansas River. Also settled was the tribe’s claim for return of railroad station grounds taken by the federal government, without compensation to the tribe, before Oklahoma statehood in 1907. Gov. James served five terms as president of the Intertribal Council of the Five Civilized Tribes, with a 24-year perfect attendance record. The resounding, “I bring you greetings from the great unconquered and unconquerable Chickasaw Nation” was his standard greeting at speeches and gatherings. The quote became a traditional greeting, continued to the present day. Gov. James was a 32nd degree Mason, Shriner, a member of the Ada Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and a lifetime member of the VFW. In 1987, he was the first inductee in to the Chickasaw Hall of Fame. He was on the board of Bacone College, the Five Civilized Tribes Museum and Foundation. He was a Trustee of the National Indian Athletic Hall of Fame and served in numerous other positions. Upon retiring in 1987, Gov. James devoted much of his time to his favorite sport of golf, making his sixth hole in one shortly before his 80th birthday. Gov. James is survived by his daughter, Ranell Harry, Tulsa; and granddaughter, Dedra Phillips and husband Mark, Tulsa; great-grandchildren, Katelyn Lower, Christopher Lower and Channing Phillips, also of Tulsa. He is also survived by niece Dede Williams and husband Gary, Durant, and their children, Travis Williams and Chris Williams; Chris’ family wife, Angie and children Presley and Kaydee, all of Durant; niece Sue Hooper and husband Roy of Lawton and Van James and family of Indianola. Gov. James’ dedication to the Chickasaw Nation was surpassed only by his dedication to his family. His legacy will live on through those he leaves behind, who have learned from his example of kindness, generosity and love. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Governor Emeritus Overton James Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Chickasaw Foundation, P.O. Box 1726, Ada, OK 74821.
